Hey, good i found this video here! I'm to help someone decide to go in for a PEG. He is currently being fed with a Nasogastric tube. Can someone tell me why should one go for a PEG. He is suffering from motor neuron disease (Hemiplegia & Aphasia).
Now, you are saying NG tube can cause Asp. pnemonia. coz i thought PEG may cause it as sometimes food or fluid may leak. Please clarify. The thing is I want to be very sure and then change from NG tube to PEG. My main concerns are 1. Aspiration pnemonia, 2. intestine ulcers 3. INFECTION.
Secondly, the patient is male 65 years, Diabetis Type 1 (on insulin), already operated for CABG heart bypass surgery 10 years back. Currently suffered from Cerebral stroke - rt side hemiplegia and aphasia.
Hope this helps in your comments for advise and information.
The wound infection is the main complication of PEG, and the patient must tolerate the operation. You can contact your GI docter to get the information. I am sure the PEG is much better for long period Enteral nutrition.
Old age, Diabetis and heart insufficiency will increase the risk of PEG, but for a patient could not eat or swollow, the Nasogastric tube could cause many complications.
hi doc,how about if the patient vomit?theres no risk for asp.pneumonia?what the best position while feeding PEG bolus by syringe?and is it important to put back the stomach content when aspirating when initiating feeding?
Nasogastric tube is very thin in diameter, which could only allow fluid food be fed.
The PEG tube's diameter is much increased, so it can ensure the patient's nutrition intake. You can feed the patient rice, chicken, meat, vegatable, anything you like. You just need food blender to mix them. To ensure the patient's nutrition intake could also help such patient's disease.

I am the doctor, who handle the PEG operation in this video. I am in China.
Nasogastric tube is very discomfort compared with PEG, and may cause aspirated pneumonia in these patients.

PEG will not cause Asp. pnemonia. because it is not in the esophagus.

it'd be better if we knew what she's saying

It's also for patients who don't get enough calories through just eating, and need extra through feeding. Like Cystic Fibrosis.

Hmm, It'd be better if I could understand what this procedure was for.

It is for patients could not swallow food, but their stomach and intestine is normal, such as the motor neuron disease.
