Sarah Brightman has a delightful voice. She caresses the notes in the most exquisite manner.
However, the goofy dancing does put one off a bit.
I just find it silly that so many hacks feel so qualified to criticize her, or even compare her to Charlotte Church!!! That is just ridiculous.
She has taken artistic license, for certain, but this is a lovely rendition of the most lovely aria from Handel's first opera, which was translated into Italian.

she has a nice voice, no denying that. i don't think she makes any claim to being an opera singer, thus the microphone doesn't really bother me. however, it is waaaaay over sentimental. it's like baroque with a post-romantic sensability, like those awful editions of the 24 italian songs and arias.
she copied all the ornaments from the Farinelli version ! ugh ! not cool. a real artist does her OWN thing. the mic is bad. i do NOT like this. BUT people that don't know a lot of baroque music think it's cool and that's their right i guess....
Gosh what a beautiful voice, and gosh she should be singing something else. She can't handle this; her voice is veiled, her vowels unclear, at one point she sings "Lawscia". And numi! what's with the seaweed-dance (1:35+)?
Sorry I don`t really know where are you from but her Laschia doesn`t sound LAWScia as you say. I speak myself Italian and her Italian is not that bad. Try to listen Cecilia Bartoli singing in German.
It´s Sarah Brightman... she´s not an opera singer, she´s one of the most famous crossovers singers (And she used to sing musicals... she was the firs Christine in Phantom of the Opera (original one...).
I think... she doesn´t know how to say the words correctly...

Hideous. What on earth does the harp think it's doing? And the soupy strings? The solo violin's poor intonation, such that even his excessive vibrato can't mask it?
Yes, the ornaments on the da capo are good, but she has no sense of how to excecute them sensitively, and, incidentally, has ripped them completely from the interpretation of the aria in the film 'Farinelli'.
On the whole, an overly romantic and indulgent performance. She's not dissimilar from a clumsy soprano trombone.
Brightman's voice and technique are quite lovely, though she seems to slide up into high notes which for keen ears isn't always agreeable. A flaw in technique that doesn't really diminish her overall delivery. Her Handle is top notch. To hear her pop voice is always a surprise--tiny and childlike. It's great when she switches midway into opera mode, as in that love song from Titanic. Gives quite a charge. Love her, limitations and all.
Its always a little cruel to judge singers via youtube clip because the sound quality is not what it could be. That said, Sarah Brightman's voice doesn't really do it for me, lacking the bell like clarity I listen out for.
Sarah Brightman is, and this is confirmed by officials, THE BEST SELLING SOPRANO IN HISTORY.
So you can say her career is born through Lloyd Webber, through sexy dancing, through pulling strings, and so on.
BUt that will never change her for she truly is, a goddess, a being of elegance and grace, one of the best sopranos, though she lacks the quality of the voice other sopranos commonly have, it's Sarah who has the most unique one.
AGAIN I'll say: Much of Handel's music is sublime; therefore, apparently many men / women feel compelled to sing this. This should be left, however, to the better countertenors and male sopranos who have the appropriate timbre, purity, and technique to sing castrato arias. This warbling, sliding singer is totally inappropriate.
AGAIN, as well, if you dislike women singing this aria that much, then PLEASE divert your attention towards those contertenors and male sopranos that do.
Please find out the identity of the female soprano who does sing this aria well in the YouTube clip with the bizarre visuals. It is done so well that I would like to save it, e.g., if it is redone with more appropriate visuals.
haha. i don't understand why she's dancing so seductively when she's singing of weeping and suffering. but while there are hundreds of better sopranos than sarah brightman, you can't deny she's better at selling herself.
Sarah has one of the best, most unique voices I've ever or will ever hear. She makes every song she sings her own, not some copy-cat wannabe. I do not favor all of her songs, but songs like this one, I rank it as one of my favourites. You can't agree with it, then keep it to yourself unless you can do it better.
I can make do that she is indeed not an opera singer, although if she had trained to become one she might have been successful. However, I totally despise ppl saying that she is a terrible singer... but then again, everyone to his/her own opinion (sad to say).
it's not a bad performance - just not very interesting. It's a typical product of commercial forces - it plays safe, and the iron tempo suggests there's not much artistic engagement with the aria. The message it gives is - this is nice relaxing music you can wind down to after work - there's not much exploration of complex emotions - which is what the best artists go for!
Agreed. Crap. I can't see how people actually like her voice and say she is a good singer. She is bad, very bad. Charlotte Church, though. Give her credit where credit is due... she was a young girl when she started.
Charlotte Church has always sounded like a dying cat, and she got no better as she got older. It would've been different if she'd continued to improve, but she didn't. And whether you like Sarah or not is opinion. She CAN sing, doesn't mean you have to like her singing.
And she didn't continue to improve BECAUSE she started when she was around 11 years old. You can't start training voices classically that young. It ruins them in the long run, thus giving us what she sings today. Also, you're right.. I don't have to like Sarah Brightman's voice but I do know that a lot of people would agree in saying that she definitely got her jump start by her ex husband. She's got nothing special.
You must be english because that's what everybody in the UK thinks. But the fact is that in America, Asia and Africa most people don't even know she had something to do with Andrew. Her international jump start was with Time To Say Goodbye with her friend Andrea Bocelli.
Of course! CC is useless! She doesn't even have power in her voice, she's more cutesy nicey voice but not the quality of what opera actually is.
It's Sarah who has done it all and, though she never actually starred in an opera (but in countless musicals), we could not deny the fact that she is the best selling soprano in the world.
Well , cool down!! You can't deny that she performs this song well! Sarah has her own style.. She is not 100% bad.New I learn how to appreicate her performs. I think she dare not to say she is a opera singer. I have a big question. How come lots of people appreciate Charlotte's opera songs performance but don't like real professional opera singers performance... I just can't figure it out!!

well...remember when she sang Nella Fantasia, her dancers also dance, dancing is body languase and also can express human feelings.
I think in that moment she just danced motivated for the softly and bautiful sound of the violin.
