Nobunaga actually took pay from nobles visiting his castle, which he gave to the common people. He was also one of very few men to promote peasants to meaningful roles(including a certain Hideyoshi). He also hung out with people in the city during his youth, instead of staying cooped up and being to good for the commoners.

He had a terrible temperament, and was ruthless in war. But he was by no means more evil than anyone during his era, the opposite, rather.

The main reason he's portrayed as such a monster is because the slaughter of the Ikko-Ikki monks and the Saika. Both of whom always battled against him, and attacked him in battles they weren't even involved with. The Saika seemed to consider themselves safe because they were mercenaries.

The monks, however, was corrupt. These are the same guys that lived in luxury during the same era the EMPEROR was starving to death.

These monks made it a goal of theirs to make life hard for Nobby. They besieged his brother into suicide, and any time a battle was performed, they were there to fight him. Why? Nobunaga stopped them from getting a decree passed that would forcibly kick all Christians out. Nobunaga was the kindest to foreigners(funny, ain't it?), even being good friends with Luis Frois. @lancer081292 nobunaga is looked at as being heartless but in terms of history the things he did were not that much different from the others during the same time period. These games just present a heavily romanticized version of the events.

Mitsuhide was a selfish snob, historically. He was also incredibly unflexible in his logic.

He was jealous of Ranmaru having such a high rank despite him being a page. Oh, and the fact that he had to serve under a peasant(Hideyoshi) is often cited to be one of the reasons for his revolt.

Nobunaga was one of those rulers that treated the nobility and the religious the same as he did the commoners. That's why he is portrayed as a villain.
