Incredible solo by Steve.Showing his creative spontaneity which Skynyrd needed a little bit more of. Ronnie and Steve were the dominant creative energy behind what could have unfolded...Not sayin' the others didnt do their part, but many great songs would have come out.. if not for fate...

I really do believe had the wreck never happened and Steve joining the band, they'd still be playing today. Along with breathing new life into the boys he seems to have hada calming affect over them as well. Awesome video thanks for sharing.

Talk bad about Skynyrd again and I won't speak so kindly of you next time ...
Such a shame the Gaines spent such a short time with Skynyrd, although they did record the double-live album "One More From the Road" with Steve onboard in '76, before both Collins and Rossington had serious car accidents Labor Day weekend in '76; which slowed the recording of "Street Survivors". They were 5 shows into the Street Survivors Tour (their best selling tour yet) before the crash; hence, so few vids of this tour. What a loss, as I'm sure Graham woulda recorded some great videos :(
@Revolution1117 This was not from the "STREET SURVIVOR" tour...Steve joined the band in May of 1976...They had been working on this song since early 1977....The Street Survivor Tour Started the week of October 14,1977..."Bill Graham's "DAY ON THE GREEN" was recorded on July 2, 1977 but his heirs refuse to release it all ....This show here is from Asbury Park, New Jersey July 13, 1977...
@SteveGaines Thanks for the correction! So this was performed exactly 1 week before the crash; rare stuff! Living in the Bay Area, I do remember the 7/2 and 7/4 1977 "Day On The Green #4 & 5" with Frampton headlining; and there is only one video from that concert with Skynyrd playing "Freebird" floating around out there from "Freebird the Movie", filmed on 7/2 @ DOTG, NOT 7/4 as listed in the credits.Woulda loved to have to been able to have seen whole "S.S. Tour" set! Such is fate, though. :(
@SteveGaines Thinking... I dont believe they did a show on the 14th of Oct... I seen them in Hollywood Fla. on Oct 15th. they played Lakeland Fla on the 16th. Jacksonville on 18th. there is another show in there somewhere in fla. Between the 15th and the 18th. They were a working band. They kicked off the S. S Tour in Greeneville S.C on Oct 19. "1977" and was on there way to Baton Rogue for the 2nd show of S.S tour. When they ran out of gas. WTF I still have a problem with this. wellmanyissues
@Southernborn761 According to my original "STREET SURVIVORS" Album the tour started on Oct 15 at The Sportatorium in Miam, Fl. Oct 16 BayFront Center, St.Petersburg, Fl, Oct 18. Lakeland CIvic Center, Lakeland Florida, October 19 War Memorial Stadium, Greenville, South Carolina. That was the last show.
@SteveGaines Well the sportatorium is located in Hollywood Fla. But i was going by my old memory. The album was not released until the 19th for the Greenville show. I knew there was another show in the mix. they did a small show in Jax. I know i was back stage and Ronnie told me that Steve Gaines was going to be the new lead singer of skynyrd. He told me to watch Steve. He was going to sing some songs. He was getting Steve ready to take over as the frontman and yeah Steve was the right person..
@SDMFAnthony01 NO..... He was not going to quit. He was going to produce music and of course he would do a Skynyrd show when he wanted to. He wanted to stay closer to home. It is pretty common knowledge he was slated to produce Molly Hatchett's first album. He was very hands when it came to his music. He learned a lot in Muscle Shoals and working with the recording master Mr. Tom Dowd. Ronnie was always 3 or 4 steps ahead of where he was at. Thinking ahead. Making plans for later on downtheroad
@Southernborn761 yeah, i hear ya...he woulda had his iron in a few fires, but leave skynyrd?? i don't think so...he loved his fans to much and they would have protested so loudly he would have changed his mind on that one...but unfortunately, we'll never know which makes me sad thinking about it..but i DO agree by this song that steve could have handled vocal duties without any problems...sounded a lot like ronnie but with even a bit higher register. thank you for your insight brother.
Great rare vid; Thanks for the post! Maybe the only live recording of this song. Steven Gaines was the best thing that happened to Skynyrd in years, with his playing (3-guitar attack again),vocals and writing skills; as proof on "Street Survivors". I think they were just starting a "re-birth" until the unthinkable happened. Never the same since....
The southern shit blobs won't let you join their confederate militia (lol) if you don't kneel before their skinny Jesus dumbs hit and blow his dead cock
A great performance ! I love Gary Rossington's slide playing on this tune and he is underrated as a slide player.(trademark cigarette in the picking hand) Steve Gaines singing and playing a Les Paul is another rarity. This performance was just a few moths before the tragic plane crash.
@dalet6363 You are right, Gaines did co write this with Ronnie. Says right here on the street survivors cd. Gaines also co wrote on, I never dreamed. And got full songwriting credit for, I know a little, and ant no good life. There is a wigged version of ant no good life on the the 30th edition deluxe edition cd, with the honketts singing backup. Hopefully its on youtube somewhere
@BufordWoody Lol oh ok, my bad. right on man! Ronnie was quite the charcter, did you hear about the time he punched Billy Powells 2 front teeth for staring at a girls breasts
@beesleeper Yea thats why there are always 200,000 to 300,000 thousand screaming american fans for there outside concerts in the 70s we hated them right. SKYNYRD fan through and through, you must be to you seem to be on there sites quite a bit. talk crap about something you know you know nothing about SKYNYRD. or the American people.
Absolute audio gold. The band was really tight at this point, and the addition of Gaines was like an injection of steroids mixed with a shot of Tennessee whiskey... Just doesn't get any better than this folks.
Tokefication, re: "how come all the other memebers let ronnie hit them and push em around? i mean hes a midget compared to allen".. You ever been in a band? I'm asking because someone's gotta be the leader, and its usually the singer, especially if he's got any drive and talent. RVZ was the visionaryin that group, the guy who demanded they excel.
Re: "Saw Steve and the boys in Charleston, WV not long before that sad day. The bill was Lynyrd, Dickey Betts and Great Southern and 38 Special. They did T for Texas as one of the encores, and the guitarists for all three bands played together, solos galore." That must have been awesome! Thirty-Eight Special I had the privilege of seeing live in the mid-80s, and they were unbelieveable. Still one of my favorite bands to this day, alongside LS of course.
"Nothing better then listening to Gary playing slide." Agreed, I have played guitar for years, including slide, and I am always amazed that he isn't considered one of the greats using this technique, because he wails. He's very fluent and has great ideas... and his intonation is on the money, which is very critical when you are playing slide.
@GeorgiaBoy1961 yeah - he's right up there with walsh, and he WAS the slide guy for skynyrd.. i like his standard lead play as well. i once read that he sort of downplayed his own lead ability - can you believe that ? I've always thought he was an interesting player. His style helped give them their signature bad ass sound.
man. watching these old ones makes me love them even more. You wont see no rock better then this and never will RVZ be replaced. You cant duplicate this southern rocking awesome shit.
This could have been my Mom's song. She didn't want to go into assisted living. She will be missed but was a fighter and never let the grass grow under her feet! She traveled around the world some and was as tough as they come!
GET DOWN STEVIE GANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE COULD PICK THAT THING. It's difficut to pick like that and sing too. He was really good -- what a loss -- of all of them
Steve Gaines comes from Detroit Wheels (the Mitch Ryder band) and before that RIO Smokehouse. I used to watch later renditions of Smokehouse in the late 70s at Mothers in Chicago.
Thats what's cool about this song; it can be interpreted two different ways; "you got THAT RIGHT", or "you got that RIGHT". I wish Steve had sang on more songs; he was AWESOME
An amazing track! Steve Gaines was such a great talent. His vocal style has a strong similarity to the legendary Steve Winwood of Traffic/Blind Faith, who was held in awe by the likes of Hendrix and Clapton. Winwood was known as one of the finest "white" blues singers and a superb musician. I hold Steve Gaines in similar esteem as a vocalist and as a guitarist he would have been as widely recognized as Hendrix and Clapton had his life and supreme talent not been tragically lost to the world.
There is always the arguement on who was the better player.Steve or Ed.My opinion is that the best albums they ever did where second helping and street survivors. The coloring those two added to the songs was incredible.Steve really willed the band to the next level here. But it amazing to watch Ronnie run the band like a general not missing an note. His genius and dedication to the music kept everything so tight.
@imakewarwiththebeast Ronnie was'nt singing about "God given rights". He was just saying "You bet your ass" or " fuckin-a right" or "damn straight, that's how i am". Peace.
@BufordWoody You may be correct. It's a great jam regardless. I'll send you a video so you can see where I'm coming from on these "rights" I'm against. :-)
I was seated in the balcony section for this show...Steve Gaines was still trying to put all the licks together..Hotter than the hubs of hell in this place..about the size of a high school gym..Thankfully my hotel room had a pool for later.
This is definitely one of my favorite Skynyrd songs...I never knew this was Steve Gaines singing with Ronnie...I must say Steve kicked ass in this song! A++
It was a lucky break for Skynyrd & Gaines to play together. He was an exceptional player/picker but do not forget that he walked into a signature sound architected by Gary &
Allen. How convenient was that! Who would have ever
known of Gaines had he not played in Skynyrd? Stevie
had exceptional style & blended with Skynyrd to enhance electricity. Stevie wasn't in his own house man. He was
Steve added the necessary fire to put this wonderful band over the top. Check out his voice and musicianship= plus HIS SISTER is singing with Skynyrd! How 'bout that?! These guys were the band we listened to in HS to get the energy up and moving. Can someone post this clean with the Gaines solo intact and without the lame logo in the field of view, Jeez! Love you guys!
@sonofachamp Wrong ! When I was a teenager I was playing all of Gary`s and Allen`s guitar parts ! I am very sure steve would also be able too. LOL Before this gets nasty I will say again, I love Garys and Allens guitar style and sound. Steve is a better player the proof is in the music. Oh yeah, save the childish line... "If you are such a good guitar player why didnt you sell 20 million records!" Please dont make a jackass out of yourself ! LOL
@atomicplayboy4u: How hard a line is to play isn't a measure of its musical worth... some of the simplest licks are very memorable... CCRs stuff is - for the most part - very easy to play, but people love their music and they sold millions and John Fogerty is a legend. Steve Gaines made an immediate impact on the band, because they'd been together long enough that some new blood invigorated them. Great players need fresh ideas and players - you can only play a song the same so many times.
@sonofachamp I think though that Steve just had a different feel and wanted to add a touch of difference in the style but not to distract from being southern only just to add more soul to it. Gary and Allen were more in groove with each because they were the original band members and therefore have spent countless hours with each other playing the songs over and over until they got it down to a point that all they needed to do is hear the queue and they know exactly where their part should be.
@domin77148 sorry to offend you but watch the fuckin video and tell me steve gaines isn't awesome. the whole band is awesome i know this but i watch this video and steve gaines shines.with that said gary and allen are a huge reason skynyrd rules and continues to rule the world!!!!!!! best american rock band ever!!!!!!!!
Well I would say they got sumthin goin. This video only beats out LiJie Konyubaba and Wilhelm Kempff Moonlitght Sonata mvt 3 because it is a whole band performing virtuoso.
You won't find me in an old folks home either! won't be no one but me wiping my ass. When it is time give me a good dog, some scotch, and a rifle and let me go off into the wilderness, I will find a a much better way to die that rotting in an old folks home. This band understood all of us that bust our ass working, and work even harder at playing, GREATEST Rock n Roll band in the history of the earth, the rest are bands and musicians, but this band was one of US! And still is, God bless them
I am speechless ,this is so amazingly brilliant, there is really no way to put it to words. The stunning songwriting ,and harmonizing by Gaines/Van Zandt ,the slide guitar by Rossington.Just absolutely Kick -ass. God ,I miss them.Thank God for the material they left for us to enjoy and to pass on to our children.
I sat in the 11th row center for this show...My 17th birthday...Still have the ticket stub...Had no idea at the time how lucky I was to see the original incarnation of skynyrd(minus eddie king)and including new guitarist steve gaines and the original honkettes.Ronnie performed barefoot, said he liked to feel the floor burn...
We lost more than a band when that plane went down in Mississippi that fateful Thursday evening on October 20, !977. We lost friends, great musicians, even A loss of innocence. It was comparable to when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper died. Maybe more so because that the day our music died. RIP Ronnie, Duane, Allen, Steve, Billy, Hughie, and all the others we lost along the way...........
We lost more than just a band when that plane went down that fateful Thursday evening in Mississippi. When lost friends, great musicians, even a end of innocence. It was comparable to when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper died. Maybe even more so because it was the day our music died. RIP Ronnie, Steve, Billy Hugie, Allen, Leon, Duane, and all the rest we've lost along the way.
I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in Long Beach, Ca. 2 weeks before the plane crash. It was a great concert. As far as I'm concerned, this line up is the only Lynyrd Skynyrd that I'm interested in. Sadly most have passed. The current line up, not as good. Now 33 years later I live in Steve Gains hometown, Miami, Ok.
Charlie Daniels was right when he said Ronnie and him were apart of everything. This concert by Skynyrd was in New Jersey just a stones throw away from the Big Apple-NY City. New York City had its biggest black out this night. That black out shut down the whole city, and here was Ronnie and the boys playing just a state away.
I know this is "You got that Right", but someone on here asked if there was more footage of Steve?Back in 1988 I was watching on TBS "Night Tracks", and lo and behold the announcer goes "MIller Beer wants to tribute Lynyrd Skynyrd", and they showed the band at the day on the green playing SHA. I could'nt believe it. There was Skynyrd right on t.v. Back before the internet you never saw any footage of Skynyrd. Anyway Steve killed it with his amazing solo in Alabama. Has anyone else seen this?
Yes it does...Right at 3:07...Gains shredding his calluses with his blistering brilliance...(Callus:Thickened skin due to chronic rubbing or irritation)
how did he get that les paul to sound like a strat? did they have coil tapping back then where they could split a humbucker into a single coil? i really want to know
hey man... i play in a band with his old bass player John Seaberg. john told me that when he joined skynyrd Allen Collins as a gift took his les paul and had brand new gold hardware put on it. the luthier that worked on it found that one of the coils on the bridge humbucker was not working... hadn't been for a while... so... he fixed it but put a push/pull pot so that steve could still get his tone... that's from Steve's mouth to John Seaberg to me... Seth Freeman
Incredible solo by Steve.Showing his creative spontaneity which Skynyrd needed a little bit more of. Ronnie and Steve were the dominant creative energy behind what could have unfolded...Not sayin' the others didnt do their part, but many great songs would have come out.. if not for fate...

GeorgiaBoy1961 5 months ago
@GeorgiaBoy1961 yeah - he's right up there with walsh, and he WAS the slide guy for skynyrd.. i like his standard lead play as well. i once read that he sort of downplayed his own lead ability - can you believe that ? I've always thought he was an interesting player. His style helped give them their signature bad ass sound.

I don't have any rights. Rights can only be "assumed" under the law. I live under grace.
Those boys did some serious jammin' but the lyrics kind of suck on "this song".
(John 1:17) For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
(Romans 6:14) For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
I thought that the powers that be were ordained of God. So who are these "elected officials" of corruption? Tax hookers? :-)
imakewarwiththebeast 11 months ago
@imakewarwiththebeast Ronnie was'nt singing about "God given rights". He was just saying "You bet your ass" or " fuckin-a right" or "damn straight, that's how i am". Peace.
BufordWoody 10 months ago
@BufordWoody You may be correct. It's a great jam regardless. I'll send you a video so you can see where I'm coming from on these "rights" I'm against. :-)

He was

@sonofachamp Well said. Steve was great but Gary & Allen had something special. Lynyrd Skynyrd is Ronnie, Gary and Allen.
domin77148 1 year ago
@domin77148 I'm glad that someone does have the
true insight to not all of a sudden give total praise and
kingdom to Steve Gaines. This ofcourse is not being
said without total respect & acknowledgement of his
picking talent as well as an increased energy Skynyrd
literally GAINED FROM GAINES!! Gary and Allen truly
did have something special and Steve Gaines gained
from the opportunity to play with them. When it comes
to the roots, Skynyrd will always be Ronnie, Gary, & Allen!
sonofachamp 1 year ago
@sonofachamp Well put :) I agree even though Steve can run rings around the boys they are the sound and without them who knows where steve would be ?
atomicplayboy4u 11 months ago
@atomicplayboy4u Steve could never play the way Gary and Allen play
and for that mentality stated, they ran rings around him. Two different
styles meeting up to make one sound. I would NEVER CONCEDE that
no matter how good or special Gaines was that he was that much better
or more special than Gary or Allen. Just different and no way no how any
better than the boys who made SKYNYRD. Steve was neat to listen to
because he did bring something different and the combo worked.
sonofachamp 10 months ago
@sonofachamp Wrong ! When I was a teenager I was playing all of Gary`s and Allen`s guitar parts ! I am very sure steve would also be able too. LOL Before this gets nasty I will say again, I love Garys and Allens guitar style and sound. Steve is a better player the proof is in the music. Oh yeah, save the childish line... "If you are such a good guitar player why didnt you sell 20 million records!" Please dont make a jackass out of yourself ! LOL
atomicplayboy4u 10 months ago
@atomicplayboy4u Exactly. Steve could have but he didn't cause he left
it up to those other guys to do what they did or do what they do. Steve did
what he did and in concert together it worked! I will always give the praises
to Gary and Allen with utmost respect for super player Steve. The only thing
nasty about Skynyrd is the demise of this great combo due to their tragic end.
Your opinion is a good one. I think otherwise but it is no disrespect to yours.
sonofachamp 10 months ago
@atomicplayboy4u: How hard a line is to play isn't a measure of its musical worth... some of the simplest licks are very memorable... CCRs stuff is - for the most part - very easy to play, but people love their music and they sold millions and John Fogerty is a legend. Steve Gaines made an immediate impact on the band, because they'd been together long enough that some new blood invigorated them. Great players need fresh ideas and players - you can only play a song the same so many times.
GeorgiaBoy1961 5 months ago
@sonofachamp I think though that Steve just had a different feel and wanted to add a touch of difference in the style but not to distract from being southern only just to add more soul to it. Gary and Allen were more in groove with each because they were the original band members and therefore have spent countless hours with each other playing the songs over and over until they got it down to a point that all they needed to do is hear the queue and they know exactly where their part should be.

ive always wondered how gaines took over allen's stage spot
how that move went down?
no offense meant to ac but it was a demotion of sorts it seems
gaines's story is alot like allen's i mean by that such highs&lows
summer 77 rvz's voice was showing the wear&tear of the nonstop 'torture tour'
gaines was just a force of nature
on talent alone he was taking over ls it seems like
by this time these guys were an onslaught machine
this song just exemplifies that truth

We lost more than a band when that plane went down in Mississippi that fateful Thursday evening on October 20, !977. We lost friends, great musicians, even A loss of innocence. It was comparable to when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper died. Maybe more so because that the day our music died. RIP Ronnie, Duane, Allen, Steve, Billy, Hughie, and all the others we lost along the way...........
