  • i really wish the 9 million "little girls" out in the world would stop depending on what is in between their legs to gain wealth and have more honor and class, it wicked retarded and low living, try and use talent and your mind, like Bobby Gentry did, not act like a slutty tramp, and the men who make money with them and off of them are just as low if not lower. yes im a hypocrite like everyone else and was enticed by this behavior in the past- i don't care for it and not impressed by it.

  • Americans are amazing.

  • thankyou bobbie gentry

  • Who let those white guys in there to dance?

  • IS NIKI HOEKY THE GIRL WHO INVENTED THE HOEKY POKEY ?

  • @insaneinthesfv ooo boogaboo you!

  • At least Bobbie Gentry was allowed to show her belly button, unlike Barbara Eden

in the old "I Dream of Jeanie" series.

  • @mrsolofeo I'm sure Barbara Eden , woulda, if she coulda.. Barbara too, much like Bobbie Gentry, and Betty Davis, were babes ahead of there time

  • Hooooooooooootttt

  • ahhh, the good ol days, when they knew the difference between sexy and slutty.

Or at least hardly went for the latter to get to the first.

  • Hmmmm! I somehow forgot about this song(video)! She was hot!

  • Holy Smokes!....hot!...hot!!..hotttttt!

Bobbie Gentry - The Missisippi Hippie!!!

Shania Twain (and all the rest) ....did'nt lead, they only followed.

  • This is awesome. Bobbie just oozed sexuality! All of her songs where top-notch. What a performer!!

  • I have never heard of Bobbie ever!!I am 47 yrs old and well!!I thought tis was FANTASTIC!!!!Go Bobbie Go!!!!

  • Talk about a true Southern beauty. No one today can compare to your beauty and musical talent. I wish you hadn't went away.

  • OMG I love this version, Bobbie is the man - well the woman in this case, but you know what I mean.

  • Being one of the first female artits to write her own songs is a huge accomplishment and deserves more respect than is shown by some of your comments. How about more compliments?

  • @JMyers46 How about ten grammy nominations in 1967 with four wins for her massive debut .In 1970 she won a Brit Music award for her #1 U.K hit. I'll Never Fall In Love Again'. In the states she received a grammy and acm nomination(her fourth acm nod in a row) for her 1970 hit single , Fancy. She charted eleven hot 100 pop singles 1967-1976. She charted four #1 country hits in Canada. Six of her albums crossed over to the pop album charts. Ode to Billie Joe is nearing 50 million records sold .

  • Woman is fire

  • Beautiful. I wish she hadn't stopped giving us music.

  • A solid hit from a lady that deserve to stay in the limelight much longer.

  • GOOOOOOODDDDAAAAAAAMMMMM, this woman is fine!!!.........f9ck Beyonce!!!

  • Broads were just hotter back then...

  • @911fever Dude who you telling, and without the plastic surgery and fake boobs, lips, plus they can sing.

  • @911fever I'm inclined to agree with you....but I think we were just younger and hornier back then...... ha!

  • She's SMOKIN'...her sex appeal overflows...@ 1:45 dat ass just takes over!!!

  • Today, I think Carrie Underwood could do this song justice. However, I KNOW this song would fit Jennifer Nettles and Sugarland like a hand in a glove.

  • Something was happening back in those days. People were on to something really cool.

  • heavenly! sweet as candy!

  • She was leaving a trail of flames in her path on this one for sure!

  • thank goodness she wasn't surrounded by gay men!

  • @jameszerukjr Your comment was funny I don't care who you are!

  • Golly Golly Ms Bobbie! " Hotter than two squirels screwing in a wool sock " Mississippi Beauty.

  • Dig that groove!

  • Aretha Franklin loved this song the minute she heard it and recorded it for her album "Lady Soul." Watch for Aretha's long-delayed album "A Woman Falling Out of Love." Everyone is going to be shocked at how hot it is!

  • Hey , got any more of that stuff you been smokin ?

  • Roberta Lee Streeter straight from Chickasaw County, Mississippi!!! Pure Mississippi sexy!!!!!

  • @hazelman she is gOrgeous

  • @robi2000 Yes she is!!!!!!!!

  • Psalm 139 says "we are fearfully and wonderfully made" , God never said " we were fearfully and wonderfully evolved" ;)

  • @ivorystroker AH! But it didn't say that we WEREN'T , which by it's own logic doesn't make it wrong to extend our ideas based in the divine light of new overwhelming evidence, I would think, but I never cease to be surprised at the ideas with tons of evidence that people choose to ignore just because they don't like the idea of them. Gallileo saying the earth is round and is not the centre of god's universe for instance....

  • Anyone who believes that probably believes their ancestors were apes !!!

  • @ivorystroker apes thatevolvved into this princess :)

we may disagree about this bout wow,,

  • Comment removed

  • @ivorystroker she is made up of 85% pond water....

  • Anyone know if this is included in the DVDs of the Smothers Brothers shows?

  • Oh! She was hot. But, check out those high-waters!

  • She's better than Mae West.

  • I'm ready for a Spanking now the 500 ft. of Heavy Duty Electric Wire and 90 Pig Tail Sockets and Brand New Garden 200 AMP Breaker Box were worth the new Christmas Installation. This has been one Hip heck of a Consultation. Thank you Jesus for the Permanent Garden Lighting.

  • This has so much soul! Very bluesy! Love it!

  • P.J. Proby had the big hit with this song. But Bobbie does a pretty good rendition.

  • i cant get over how awesome this is!!!

  • Bobby can sing but those boys dancing sure seemed clumzy.

  • sweet.........

  • Bobby Gentry was one of a kind she didn't mimic she's wow. A uniquely gifted and incidently a beautiful woman. Why in our country is there still such a focus on looks, talent seems to take a back seat Bobby Gentry is an example of talent.

  • @2old2Rock Uh, but two Redbone members wrote the lyrics. ??

  • @ThinkTooMutch According to Wikipedia, Redbone wasn't formed until 1969. This was two or three years after this was recorded (this TV performance is from 1967). The Vegases wrote the song before they formed the group.

  • @saskabush2006 This song is an old New Orleans standard that way predates the Vegases. They may have claimed authorship, but this song goes way back.

  • @saskabush2006 I think this performance was '68 or '69. Her rendition of the song was not released until '68.

  • @strawberryseason Actually this was the only song she did not write off her debut album of Ode to Billie Joe.It was released in the fall of 1967 and sold a stunning 500,000 copies in three weeks to knock The Beatles St. Pepper album of the #1 album chart.Ironically, her single knocked The Beatles 'All You Need is Love' off the top spot on the hot 100 singles chart too. The album would go on to have an international sale of 1.5 million, a huge figure for a female recording artist of the 1960s

  • @danielrdrown This Smothers Brothers performance would have been from '68 or '69, likely. The clothing and dance styles of her and her dancers were from the late 60s, past '67.

  • @strawberryseason. It was from the fall of 1967 according to The Smothers Brothers auto-biography. She obviously would not have been promoting songs from her first album in 1968 or 1969 . By the end of 1968 she had already released three studio albums and her million selling duets album with Glen Campbell

  • I'm working on getting a translation of those crazy, zany, great lyrics! "Get hip to the consultation of the boolawee"? Huh? LOL

  • @ThinkTooMutch it was not crazy or zany..in the poke or pokey was prison (watch old movies), on a trip was something girls did to hide a pregnancy. get hip to or get wise...like that is to know and to act...to the boolawee...like her mom is fine and she is too...and she needs to know and act and the young men are too eager to teach her about the "facts of life" they did not say things right out back then.

  • Totally hot, but more importantly she could sing and had such a great style. I wish I could tell her how much I like her music, too bad she disappeared after retiring. Anyone know where I could write to Bobbie?

  • anyway.....this music has had a massive impact on my life from a very early age. we owned the 'ode to billy joe' ep and used to listen to it alot. i would dearly love to hear it again so if someone is thinking of putting all the tracks on youtube then pls contact me...it would mean alot.....

  • @thehaleo ....LP not ep srry

  • those were the days.... remember this song/dance and the outfit??

  • Totally groovy and mod!

  • Unspeakably, ridiculously wonderful

  • id hit that

  • Miss Gentry is a classy looking lady and a fine performer! Still love her recordings,

sung in that low lusty voice!

  • looks like bollywood

  • Bobby baby!

  • Bobbie was hot but the dudes in her group look too gay

  • @Manongjojo And what is wrong with gay unless you are an ignorant homophobe? Anyone comfortable in their own sexuality should have no problem with persons of a different persuasion unless they are coming from a religous standpoint and if that is the case I would guess the blatantly sexual performance by Ms Gentry and the content of the song would be off limits in and of themselves and a sin to watch.

  • @57timmyb There is plenty wrong with it. I HATE faggits. Silly fag dicks are for chicks.

  • @Manongjojo You might learn how to spell the hateful words you spew idiot- but then you are an idiot so silly old fag me. I suspect you're a closet case.

  • @Manongjojo .....hey mongo...its damn shame your dad didnt wank you out when he was yonger....bobbie gentry deserves more respect ya music n00b

  • @Manongjojo No, come on, tell us how you REALLY feel.

  • @57timmyb Here, here!!

  • This would be great remake for Amy Winehouse.

  • dayum, hot

  • Sounds a lot like Ode to Billy Joe.

  • Only these gay dancers could not have gone stone bone dancing behind Bobby G like that

  • @pillroller88 that's funny! but i think she could make the gay hard

  • @pillroller88 In the early 70's a woman I dated had a brother who was a dancer in Gentry's Vegas show, and I sure don't think h liked her as much as I did!

  • @pillroller88 In the early 70's a woman I dated had a brother who was a dancer in Gentry's Vegas show, and I sure don't think he liked her as much as I did!

  • Love her hope i can do the song justice on x-factor nxt year x

  • "Top Class"

  • What a classy lady!!, Beautiful and I love her voice, she is not like any other!!

    God Bless You Bobby Gentry!

  • Blimey. HOW cool is this!? Like a JH Lynch painting come to life! Amazing!

  • TRIVIA: BG married the casino tycoon, Bill Harrah. It lasted about a year. Both admitted is was a mistake.

  • ever wonder what these dancers look like now? naw! don't even want to think of it!

  • Bobby was the real deal beauty and soul !!!! What a great voice ! White hot soul at it's best !

  • Sam exact freakin' guitar as Ode to Billy Joe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • roberta is a recluse today. can't say i blame her.

  • ummmmmmmm...one sexy WOMAN...

  • Who let all these BEES in here. arggg, this place is full of BEES!!!

  • Sexiest voice ever! I've got all her albums, yes albums!

  • she had a killer body even by todays standards

  • I hate it that her voice is drowned out by the music a few times.

  • Bobbie Gentry marries Tony Joe White they have 4 boys....you got creedence clearwater revival!! Bobbie you can walk across my living room like that any day of the week. yeeow

  • I always loved her voice - but you can't beat the choreography in this clip!

  • Good Lawd, have mercy........

  • Wow! Hotttt!!!!!!!!

  • The lyrics are total gibberish.

  • Man, oh man. Where does the time go.

  • Did she say I'm talkin bout that ....weed?!?

  • @Cuchino51

Yes. This is WHY the lyrics are gibberish.

Get hip to the consultation of the boola weed.

  • @msbfd Not really trying to get "hip" to it I suppose......never heard of "boola" weed and I don't smoke.......just liked this song LOL

  • And country music complained about Shania Twain showing her belly?!?

  • I love friggin Bobbie Gentry wif all my heart!

  • if my laptop overheats because of this woman, I am going to sue YouTube.

    yes.

  • What a fox!

  • In the 1960's, TV Guide named Bobbie " the Mississippi Hippie!"

  • Bobbie Genry is and was such a cool lady. I bet she could do the moonwalk with the greatest of ease, she is so smooth on her feet, is she not. She always sings live and I love the sound of her voice.

  • Song written by the guys who became Redbone and had their own hits.

  • Great song, original by P.J.Proby I believe

  • I used to wish I was her back when she was doing this, I think I was 10....she was an ideal woman in my eyes then

  • What a sexy woman and what a voice !

  • @grantgalea

How can anything that hokey and funky be that hot. Must have something to do with the Delta Sweetie!

  • gataaaaaaaaa

  • What? Are you kidding me? You could bounce a Kennedy halfdollar of those buns and it would jump up and blind you, chile....

  • @southpawcom Could'nt have said it better !!!

  • @douro20 she's wearing loose pants in this. I saw her in Knoxville a few years ago and she was wearing jeans, her ass looked nice and tight.

  • sutch a spin fomr the original

  • Sexiest thing on two legs!

  • A True American Original

She had style, beauty, and the world by the tail

    once upon a time

  • Southern women are special. The ladies of Designing Women were portraying this very real kind of appeal.

  • Same basic groove as 'Billie Joe', but tarted up with horns and sexy lyrics. Odd after 'Ode' with it's poignancy. This is okay on it's own and in it's own way, but it sure seems cheezy next to her best work.

  • I think I have commented on this before, but I have to say this: This is one of my favorite things EVER!

  • I seem to remember reading that Bobbie Gentry at one time was a show girl.

  • Not her best, nor the best version of this song. The dance production is over the top and phony. She has a wonderful voice; she didn't need this plastic Vegas crap.

  • That was the way things were back in the day. Look at other 60's videos and you'll find lots more of this. I doubt she'd do this like this again. She came from Vegas VIA the swamps.

  • Why I would much rather hear her sing her own songs this is still cool. Bobbie started out as a dancer in the Follies Berge and started headling Las Vegas casinos in the late 1960's. She was the first woman in Las Vegas to sign a million dollar contract and she sold out the showrooms of Vegas up until her retirement in 1980 refusing another multi million dollar contract in favor of being a full time mother to her newborn son.

  • You're absolutely right.

  • She's so cool!!

  • Get hip? You've got hips, Miss Bobbie! And that's not all!

  • what a beautiful woman

  • she is my great cousin.

im soon to be famous i got a voice too!! music choice and me are processing my new song god bless now. be on the lookout for lizzy gentry!

  • Perfect hour glass figure

  • hurt me!

  • i keep coming back to this video-lol.. DAM SHES FINE.. shes just got that appeal i guess..

  • Smokin!

  • shes got it goin on for sure

  • She has exatly the face I like in a woman.

    That is!

  • Bobbie has some killer hips

  • @HOPFreak Yeah, back when women could HAVE hips without being called "fat"...

  • @ModGirl1967 - that is because she has hips without being fat.

  • @ScottfromTexas she looks hot...but i wouldn't call them hips.

  • @ScottfromTexas Yup.

  • Everytime I drive through the Mississippi delta, I can almost hear Bobby Gentry's soulful sound in my head. She is a true Mississippi girl who is in touch with her southern culture

  • Boy am I diggin all these vids you posted! Really Great Thanks For your efforts! Much Respect, taki

  • if that isn't one of the coolest videos ever!

  • Good Golly Miss Gentry! It doesn't get any sassier that this! Love it~

  • I loves me some Bobbie Gentry!

  • FANTASTIC!!! Thanks for this tribute! Makes me sad the "Variety Shows" have gone extinct. Some great art going on here, costumes, choreography, etc.!

  • Have mercy, Miss Bobbie!

  • Wow, she is incredible.

  • To Spartaeus - lol!

Guys who are gay wear colourful clothing and dance - so those guys are gay! Grow up and step outside your box.

  • So those guys are gay, eh? What's your frickin' point?

Are you jealous that they can dance and look better than

    you, StraightAss???

  • Anybody who can see anything other than Bobbie dancing is gay...end of argument.

  • She look like Fran Dresher...THE NANNY

  • Those guys are gay, lol.

  • So what show was she on and when? And what's a nikie hoeky anyhow? I loved her verson.

  • She appeared on over 100 variety shows 1967-1980. She had her own bbc variety show in England1968-71. My favvorites wer her multiple apperances on Ed Sullivan and the three specials she did for cbs. She also hosted the Kraft Music Hall special on nbc three times. Her last television performance was in 1980 on an nbc Mothers Day special hosted by Ed Mc Mahon

  • She loves singing barefoot
