i really wish the 9 million "little girls" out in the world would stop depending on what is in between their legs to gain wealth and have more honor and class, it wicked retarded and low living, try and use talent and your mind, like Bobby Gentry did, not act like a slutty tramp, and the men who make money with them and off of them are just as low if not lower. yes im a hypocrite like everyone else and was enticed by this behavior in the past- i don't care for it and not impressed by it.
Being one of the first female artits to write her own songs is a huge accomplishment and deserves more respect than is shown by some of your comments. How about more compliments?
@JMyers46 How about ten grammy nominations in 1967 with four wins for her massive debut .In 1970 she won a Brit Music award for her #1 U.K hit. I'll Never Fall In Love Again'. In the states she received a grammy and acm nomination(her fourth acm nod in a row) for her 1970 hit single , Fancy. She charted eleven hot 100 pop singles 1967-1976. She charted four #1 country hits in Canada. Six of her albums crossed over to the pop album charts. Ode to Billie Joe is nearing 50 million records sold .
Today, I think Carrie Underwood could do this song justice. However, I KNOW this song would fit Jennifer Nettles and Sugarland like a hand in a glove.
@jameszerukjr I'm a gay man and I completely appreciate Bobbie's beauty and sultry, sexy performance here. And you can bet some of those guys were gay and loved every minute of her.
Aretha Franklin loved this song the minute she heard it and recorded it for her album "Lady Soul." Watch for Aretha's long-delayed album "A Woman Falling Out of Love." Everyone is going to be shocked at how hot it is!
@ivorystroker AH! But it didn't say that we WEREN'T , which by it's own logic doesn't make it wrong to extend our ideas based in the divine light of new overwhelming evidence, I would think, but I never cease to be surprised at the ideas with tons of evidence that people choose to ignore just because they don't like the idea of them. Gallileo saying the earth is round and is not the centre of god's universe for instance....

Bobby Gentry was one of a kind she didn't mimic she's wow. A uniquely gifted and incidently a beautiful woman. Why in our country is there still such a focus on looks, talent seems to take a back seat Bobby Gentry is an example of talent.
@ThinkTooMutch According to Wikipedia, Redbone wasn't formed until 1969. This was two or three years after this was recorded (this TV performance is from 1967). The Vegases wrote the song before they formed the group.
@strawberryseason Actually this was the only song she did not write off her debut album of Ode to Billie Joe.It was released in the fall of 1967 and sold a stunning 500,000 copies in three weeks to knock The Beatles St. Pepper album of the #1 album chart.Ironically, her single knocked The Beatles 'All You Need is Love' off the top spot on the hot 100 singles chart too. The album would go on to have an international sale of 1.5 million, a huge figure for a female recording artist of the 1960s
@danielrdrown This Smothers Brothers performance would have been from '68 or '69, likely. The clothing and dance styles of her and her dancers were from the late 60s, past '67.
@strawberryseason. It was from the fall of 1967 according to The Smothers Brothers auto-biography. She obviously would not have been promoting songs from her first album in 1968 or 1969 . By the end of 1968 she had already released three studio albums and her million selling duets album with Glen Campbell
@ThinkTooMutch it was not crazy or zany..in the poke or pokey was prison (watch old movies), on a trip was something girls did to hide a pregnancy. get hip to or get wise...like that is to know and to act...to the boolawee...like her mom is fine and she is too...and she needs to know and act and the young men are too eager to teach her about the "facts of life" they did not say things right out back then.
Totally hot, but more importantly she could sing and had such a great style. I wish I could tell her how much I like her music, too bad she disappeared after retiring. Anyone know where I could write to Bobbie?
anyway.....this music has had a massive impact on my life from a very early age. we owned the 'ode to billy joe' ep and used to listen to it alot. i would dearly love to hear it again so if someone is thinking of putting all the tracks on youtube then pls contact me...it would mean alot.....
@Manongjojo And what is wrong with gay unless you are an ignorant homophobe? Anyone comfortable in their own sexuality should have no problem with persons of a different persuasion unless they are coming from a religous standpoint and if that is the case I would guess the blatantly sexual performance by Ms Gentry and the content of the song would be off limits in and of themselves and a sin to watch.
@Manongjojo You might learn how to spell the hateful words you spew idiot- but then you are an idiot so silly old fag me. I suspect you're a closet case.
@pillroller88 In the early 70's a woman I dated had a brother who was a dancer in Gentry's Vegas show, and I sure don't think h liked her as much as I did!
@pillroller88 In the early 70's a woman I dated had a brother who was a dancer in Gentry's Vegas show, and I sure don't think he liked her as much as I did!
Bobbie Gentry marries Tony Joe White they have 4 boys....you got creedence clearwater revival!! Bobbie you can walk across my living room like that any day of the week. yeeow
Bobbie Genry is and was such a cool lady. I bet she could do the moonwalk with the greatest of ease, she is so smooth on her feet, is she not. She always sings live and I love the sound of her voice.
Same basic groove as 'Billie Joe', but tarted up with horns and sexy lyrics. Odd after 'Ode' with it's poignancy. This is okay on it's own and in it's own way, but it sure seems cheezy next to her best work.

That was the way things were back in the day. Look at other 60's videos and you'll find lots more of this. I doubt she'd do this like this again. She came from Vegas VIA the swamps.
Why I would much rather hear her sing her own songs this is still cool. Bobbie started out as a dancer in the Follies Berge and started headling Las Vegas casinos in the late 1960's. She was the first woman in Las Vegas to sign a million dollar contract and she sold out the showrooms of Vegas up until her retirement in 1980 refusing another multi million dollar contract in favor of being a full time mother to her newborn son.
Everytime I drive through the Mississippi delta, I can almost hear Bobby Gentry's soulful sound in my head. She is a true Mississippi girl who is in touch with her southern culture
She appeared on over 100 variety shows 1967-1980. She had her own bbc variety show in England1968-71. My favvorites wer her multiple apperances on Ed Sullivan and the three specials she did for cbs. She also hosted the Kraft Music Hall special on nbc three times. Her last television performance was in 1980 on an nbc Mothers Day special hosted by Ed Mc Mahon
i really wish the 9 million "little girls" out in the world would stop depending on what is in between their legs to gain wealth and have more honor and class, it wicked retarded and low living, try and use talent and your mind, like Bobby Gentry did, not act like a slutty tramp, and the men who make money with them and off of them are just as low if not lower. yes im a hypocrite like everyone else and was enticed by this behavior in the past- i don't care for it and not impressed by it.

Wow! she looks a little like Richard Gere, or vice - versa .
In any case, if they were both to appear on the Conon O'Brian- If they mated segment, they would X each other out.
