Ugh. I was going to forgive all the terrible information in this video because I was sure it had to be from the early 90s... but nope, there at the end: 2008. Jesus rollerblading Christ.
WHAAAT!? NEVER pick up a rat from its tail. Never keep them in tanks, either. And you can introduce older rats to young and other adult rats. :/ And if you use cat litter, only use paper based bedding! No ceder, and no pine!
The whole "tanks make your house less smelly" is because the stink is trapped with them, and can cause respiratory issues. Just litter train them and the smell will go down dramatically.
NO no no.... never ever ever pick up a rat from the tail !! Not only is this extremely painfull it can cause bones breaking and alot of times you will end up with a degloved rat tail... (meaning the skin on the rat tail is ripped off) and then you have to go to the vet.. Do not pick up a rat by the tail! plus tanks are a big NO there is no ventilation and rats need and love to climb and and don't foget that diet will end up making your rat fat lead to tumors and other health problems!
wow you are so wrong and stupid you can break a rats tail if you hold it like that and a glass tank is no good bad ventalition and rats love to climb (and i have never had a rat before my bro told me this)
wow you are so wrong and stupid you can break a rats tail if you hold it like that and a glass tank is bo good bad ventalition and rats love to climb (and i have never had a rat before my bro told me this)
@KGIPopsicicle thats why you buy a cage with the right wire spacing, i had a tank and my guys kept escaping everynight. they have never escaped from my large cage.
How to care for rats......First don't watch this video or watch it leave a bad comment and don't listen to this video....everything he said was WRONG>!
picking up a rat by the base of the tail is fine for short periods (i.e. no longer than it takes to move it to a new cage, keep it from going under something, or until you have your hand other then to support them.) ask a vet...they'll tell you the same thing. a few seconds is fine no longer.
what a tit, you never pick a rat up by its tail. i was watching a vet show a few months ago and a kid picked his rat up by its tail, and he ended up degloving half the rats tail. i always pick my rats up round the middle. the only time ive grabbed one of my rats by the tail, is if he was going under something i dont think i would have been able to get him out from
my sis picked her rat up by the tail and it fell off. ._. you have bad advice. and rats are perfectly amused with toilet paper rolls (without the toilet paper on them). and dry rat food is fine. and they'll eat any left overs from dinner you give them anyway. not all this fancy crap. and a wire cage (or whatever you call it) has much more ventilation, and they chew on the bars which helps them with their teeth.
christ. There are some seriously shite vids on rat care on YT. If anyone out there is watching these vids for info on rat care I'd take most of them with a pinch of salt. Don't rely on any one as your sole info source. Also, as other have said don't pick your rats up by the tail, particularly when they're adults.
that larger rat was sick.... his eyes were half closed and there was mucus on his face. poor guy. i HATE ill-informed videos. especially on rats. omg you cant feed them insects! and since when do you "always" pick them up by the tail and keep them in a poorly-ventilated aquarium? wtf.
O.o don't pick up a rat by it's tail. EVER! Even before my rats are completely tame I still wouldn't reach for the tails. Tanks are also the worst fitting for a rat. Yeah, holds in the stink for the rat to breath in. Rats get respiratory issues easily, and that's one way to give it to him. Rats also love to climb the bars of their cages. Rats also tend to pick up on people pretty easy. They don't have to be young to do so. It all depends on their personality.
i keep my rat in a tank, but i have a normal cage top.
tanks are fine, but make sure your rat has plenty of things to climb on, as my rats, at first when i first got them, they were climbing on their house, and trying to climb up the glass :)
Why are these rat videos all so terrible? NO! Don't pick them up by the tail. You won't think it's such a great idea when the skin strips off their tail in your hand.
this is pretty bad how to video.... you never pick rats up by any part of there tail.... they should never live in tanks.... this person knows shit on the care of rats. :S
The only thing valid on this vid is the sexing info...it won't hurt to give rats grubs..but no need in USA because well nourishing rat blocks are available..the newspaper advise is silly..the ink hasn't been toxic for over 40 years..the base tends to be soy since then...please don't use his advise to care for your rat. OMG.
to tell if the rat is male they have 2 big assets on display which r not hard to miss
dont pick up a rat by the tail, unless you want a a scared rat that will bite you
also this guy gave the same video on how to care for mice, may sound picky but there are differences between mice and rats, this guy does not have a clue
This tutorial is terrible! NEVER pick your rat up by its tail! EVER! It is extremely painful for the rat and makes them feel very insecure. It can also cause something called degloving where the skin of the tail tears away from the bone.
Most insects such as the ones shown in this video contain too much protein for rats and should only be given occasionally as a treat.
Make sure you always have more than one rat as they are social and will get lonely.
Never pick up a rat by the tail it's painful and can rip off. Always pick up a rat carefully with both hands, supporting the body. Also, the pet rat originated in Norway. Tanks/acquariums are terrible for rats, the air circulation is poor and amonia builds up, irritating the rats already sensitive lungs. Cat litter that clumps can be bad for rats if they eat it, it will clump up in their mouths. Mixed rodent food is bad for them as well because they will only eat what they want. < Lab blocks
@ThexDoctorsxLie "Also, the pet rat originated in Norway. " No they didn't. People thought they were from Norway, so that's why they are called norway rats, but they DID come from asia :)
No it is the base of the tail not tip the tip of the tail is the one u have to be careful of base tail doesnt hurt the rat it only looks harsh for other animals who doesnt have a strong tail
I'm getting 2 this week. After studying them for a few weeks, joining different rat forums, reading a few books, I can say a few of the things this man says are wrong.
Im getting myn from a shop but they are always asleep.....Then again my tortoise was like that now it never goes to sleep so.....Ill have to wait and see i guess..
What pet store? If they are always asleep at the pet store that is not a good sign. Rats should be jumpy and springy, and want to investigate and play with everything.
@CatMaster87932 This place called Cadbury Garden centre....But ive only seen the rats once and it was about 5pm so i guess i was late?.....Or either the pet shops only care about the money not the pets?
Rats are nocturnal, so at 5 they would probably be active. Usually pet shops care for money and not pets. I would consider looking into a rescue, shelter, or breeder, personally. Though a pet store around me has seemingly-healthy rats.
i totally agree with you about the water btw. i mean, you can get a huge thingy of water really really cheap but theres no point! if tap waters good enough for me its good enough for my rats!
well seeing how I have never owned a rat and was intrested in getting 2 male rats from a friend who has owned rats for the past 6 years, I seem to have found the worst info. clip about raising and takeing care of rats. I would really appreciate it if anyone could pleae give me tips and information on raising and caring for rats. please send me a message. dont send one to this clip cuz i wont being coming back to watch it again. thank you so much.
I got all of my rescued rats from a nasty aquarium, the amonia buildup was terrible!
My girls now have a huge cage.
They are so happy to be able to climb.
However the tank in the video is very nice as far as aquariums go. As long as it is cleaned every other day those rats will be fine. It's a shame they can't climb, but they seem to be happy.
NEVER NEVER pick up a rat by the base of the tail, you can injure the rat's tail and cause him great pain. Never keep a rat in an aquarium, there is no ventilation in an aquarium. Your advice is very bad.
@LollyLarue I agree so many things wrong with this video, don't pick up by the tail EVER, and don't use aspen!! or wood or anything like that for a rat. !! :)
firstly, rats do not need to be introduced at a young age, they can be introduces at any age, they should never live in a tank, there is no ventilation and rats have extremley sensitive respiratory systems. you should NEVER lift by the tail at all, there is no excuse for ever doing this. It has been proven that the ink on newspaper is not poisonous at all.
OMG NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER AND I REPEAT NEVER PICK A RAT UP BY THE TAIL! EVEN BY THE BASE! It can result in what is called a "degloving" which means the skin will literally come off the bone which will then have to be amputated. Remember, rats do not have good self-cooling systems I mean, they can't exactly pant like a dog. Their tails are how they release excess heat from their body. Less tail = less heat released = a hot, unhealthy rat!
never use any type of wood chips in your rats cages, its gives them respetory infections. it isnt just myth, i've known two rats that have bled from there noses and mouths before death. I suggest using something called "carefresh ultra" found in pets stores. also, the 2-3 life span is generalizing rats. My rat lived for 5 years. cleaning th cage "weekly" is common, but it is best to have a little scooper to clean droppings daily, and to renew the entire bedding weekily.
i am not feeding my rat worms. and you are not suppose to pick a rat up by the tail. you should let them crawl in to your hand ant then bring them close to you. my rat loved to be held by my chest.
some kinds can b..its best to shred blank printer papper or cut it up it to tiny peices it soaks up the urine well and it maksks the smell relativly well...and if ur rat wants to it can chew on the paper for a snack if it really wants to most don't though they can also burrow in it if the like :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the base of their tai is fine- the tip might hurt a little more
I used to pick my old rat up by the scruff of his neck and pop him on my hand and he never bothered about that - i'm sure it was fine :) that way i didnt have to go near the tail and he would wiggle it and spin it in order to balance
This is better than some rat care videos however the glass tank and especially the wire cage shown are far too small those baby rats are going to get alot bigger. Also ventilation is very poor in tanks and rats cant climb in them.
they are great pets I have two at the moment and they love to sit on either shoulder as I walk round my home. I doesnt take long for them to get tame just offer them some treats and they will associate you with nice things
hey thx for the comment i really wanted rats but could never find any where that sold them...so instead i got a ...guinea pig seems like i will never get a rat...
im getting two boys in a few weeks. i dont need the buying step. :D

There are several problems to this advice:
1. NEVER EVER EVER pick up a rat by any part of his/her tail
2. Do not feed them insects, it can cause many health problems
3. Do NOT keep them in an aquarium, because there is no ventilation, and a wire cage needs to be wayyy bigger than that
4. Don't use any type of wood shavings for your rat. They are expensive, and they could contain dangerous oils, or dust!
5. The rat dos not need to be young for taming
6. Don't give them hay for housing.

Aspen shavings are fine, it's just softwoods that are bad.

i am not feeding my rat worms. and you are not suppose to pick a rat up by the tail. you should let them crawl in to your hand ant then bring them close to you. my rat loved to be held by my chest.

some kinds can b..its best to shred blank printer papper or cut it up it to tiny peices it soaks up the urine well and it maksks the smell relativly well...and if ur rat wants to it can chew on the paper for a snack if it really wants to most don't though they can also burrow in it if the like :)

This comment has received too many negative votes show
the base of their tai is fine- the tip might hurt a little more
I used to pick my old rat up by the scruff of his neck and pop him on my hand and he never bothered about that - i'm sure it was fine :) that way i didnt have to go near the tail and he would wiggle it and spin it in order to balance
