If this is at all similar to tennis, if the ball returns to the opponent's side without you hitting it, you are allowed to do what you need to hit it as long as you don't touch the net or the opponent's court. I'm assuming it's the same here

Point 7.1 in the ITTF rules state, that the ball must be played over or around the net garnish and then onto opponent's field to count as valid.

From what it looks like, that's not what you did since the ball had passed the net before you hit it,right ?

Good shot, but your opponent could still run around to fetch it, at least in theory. My favourite shot is the backspin so that the ball comes back onto your side, I would say the perfect shot would be the backspin shot going back into the net having bounced on their side, the net would then make it impossible to return to your side.

i don't understand did the ball actually land on your side before you hit it?... it looks like your opponent just messed up and then you came in and hit the ball for no reason =)

@codectified The ball hit the edge of my opponent's paddle and managed to land on my side of the table with enough spin to send the ball back to his side of the table. I HAD to get to the ball and hit it, but the opportunity is very rare and the "perfect" shot would be to hit it as far away from my opponent as possible. In this case, I was able to hit it the exact opposite direction of my opponent (back into "my" court). I hope that makes sense 8>)

Thanks! Not to get too "defensive" but all of my high balls have a lot of spin (usually lots of top and sometimes different side spins to keep my opponent moving and guessing). That's the main reason that can't just smash it too wide for me to reach and finish the point. Either way, glad you enjoy the video 8>)

If you are referring to the side spin with the after motion... I just tried it turn my wrist a little right when I contacted the ball and then shortly afterwards move my paddle in the opposite direction that would've created the other side spin in hopes of causing some confusion to my opponent. It's been more effective... but hopefully that answers your question 8>)
