I've never understood why people want to pit ELP against YES, Emerson against Wakeman, etc. Each band was unique in its approach and style. I remember in my school days, if you were a YES fan you weren't supposed to be an ELP fan. What garbage! And here we are 30 some-odd years on still trying to say one band is "better" than another. They are what they are.
This is one band that did not stand the test of time. Maybe technically good, but they simply sound outdated and a bit kitsch today: no real goose bumps from listening to them again as opposed to Rolling Stones, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Soft Machine or even Led Zeppelin or David Bowie.
@gilo2525 Hmmm, yes and no. Musically ELP are quite dated, as well as a lot of other prog bands from that period. But it wasn't meant to get people fired up to run to the dance floor either LOL. It has its own place in history. I don't think theres a happy medium for this type of music anyway. You either grasp it or you don't. Floyd, Zep and even some Bowie are much more commercial and appeal to a broader audience. I get goosebumps by artists that remain obscure and aren't played to death.
Love the music, but I've always loved the title, my favorite, and the cover artwork is priceless. All around impressive effort, cover to cover. Literally.
This is the greatest rock drum performance of all time as far as I'm concerned. It's almost as if the drums are the lead instrument - Carl just blasts through one fill after the next and at around the 1:34 mark he launches into this vicious beat that sound like Bonham on steroids. And the way he attacks those cymbals - sheer, unadulterated energy and power.
Although I've always liked Progressive/Fusion (or whatever label you want to put to it) I never really got into ELP. I thought "Tarkus" was a good album, but everything else seems to be just spiced up classical music with a few songs inbetween. They don't compare in any way with Yes, early Genesis, Focus etc. Those bands really did fuse different styles of music together. Whenever I tell people I like Progressive, they often assume I like ELP :(
Saw both EL&P and Yes, Keith and Rick were awesome in their different ways..(of course Wakeman's Purple Cape.) With the undesiputable Genious of both, at the time tho, I was glad enuff that "Child Prodigies"..worked hard at what they liked, and we still Love!!
@mattleemattlee123, you must be of my generation because I got to see the Brain Salad Surgery tour in December 1973 before I had even heard the album. Saw Yes Tales at Madison Square Garden February 1974 play all 4 sides of Tales. Someone has posted 3/4 of that live show on YouTube. Liked GG and Tull but never saw them; also a big Bruford-era King Crimson fan.
These were the days when the UK ruled my musicworld--gone days, but I will never forget them--
ty for this upload--wow--Youtube rules..for great memories Today, thx! Just a guy in Kansas who thought ELP was great--even b4 Karnevil 9 became background music for Mon night football:)))
I loved and love Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull, and all those bands who brought us synthesizer/progressive rock--tho to me,
Yes was trying to compose orchestral rock. And ELP was simply 3 of the most talented guys ever. They did sound as if they were 50 people, "Lucky Man" ..what a song.
Lets see..Jethro Tull, Kansas, and Genesis pre-Phil Collins, Rush, The Moody Blues even, but still wow, them's was the days--Tales of Topographic Oceans -- how I blocked out high school--music in my head.
So Spiritual! you know what this song is about?Jerusalem is the city of God-(The Church of Christ-The city of God!)And they are crying out for it to spread and dominate England!(At one time it did!)May it be so!
I saw ELP perform this Album at Wembly, a purely stunning experience. The finale left me astounded, all this great music reverberating around the arena, dry ice vapour filling the stage, and the clearing to show none of the performers actually on stage, electronic genius !!
Greg Lake had/has one of the most distinctive and underated voices in rock. I first heard him when he was with King Crimson, and his vocals on The Court of the Crimson King were brilliant.
Thanks for the correction ... I knew it was Geiger but somehow wrote Escher. Mind benders alike I suppose. Perhaps its time for some Brain Salad surgery ...
They put on the best shows of any band of the day. They travelled with 70 semi-trailers to accomodate all the orchestral equipment, lighting, and stages. This music has to be played through the old analog systems of the day to appreciate the richness and depth of the sounds these three were able to pump out. For those who didn't care for the shallow sounds of the Beatles, this was THE band.
Heard this hymn in the background when my wife was watching the royal wedding the other day. Reminded me to search for this ELP track because I don't have the Brain Salad Surgery album any more. Still love this track, the Escher covers, the synthesizers ... days long gone by. Must be getting old ... Thanks for posting ... and thanks to whoever for not freaking out about their music being posted on Youtube
This is TIMELESS AND EPIC. As only Emerson Lake and Palmer can be. If the author William Blake could have heard his work brought to life by ELP he would
have probably praised them lavishly! Both Blake and ELP were light years ahead
@dieselheart001 Uhm... they didn't write the music. This song has been around in this form since 1916. And this version is good, but if you want timeless and epic try a full orchestral version.
@womanofnoimportance Uhm... Nice way to open. Shows confidence in what you are about to offer. Of course this wasn't written by ELP. Anyone with a grammer school level of education knows that Sir Hubert Parry penned it. This version, as is any version of it, performed- is TIMELESS AND EPIC just for the hearing. When Sir Edward Elgar orchestrated it for a large orchestra in 1922, King George V said he preferred it to "God Save The King". That would have been the version worth hearing. Your point?
I saw them do this on the Brain Salad tour. Three little guys on this enormous stage and ALL THIS MUSIC was rolling out. Jerusalem was among the spooky highlights...SO powerful and majestic. Totally overwhelming.
That show, Yes's Tales from Topographic Oceans tour (and sorry, ELP didn't "pave the way" for Yes), Gentle Giant's Free Hand tour, UK's only show at the Santa Monica Civic and Tull's Passion Play tour.
Everything else is just...everything else. THOSE WERE THE DAYS!
@mattleemattlee123 Yeah good point. YES started in 1969, when The NICE and Atomic Rooster and King Crimson were going (I think...?). YES and ELP, neck and neck, all the way, only YES kept going (as a band).
@mattleemattlee123 I am so very jealous that you were able to see all of these brilliant bands. You are truly lucky because UK is my pretty much my favorite band ever and I was not even born when they were around.
大好きな、EL&Pの曲を有難うございました。感激です
