@Awesomeduud 11 C is a fun job but you don't get to pick it, and it's not easy. They choose 11 C's from 11 X's based on scores from your ASVAB test that you take before enlisting.
I love the dust. I try to tell my friends what it was like being a mortar but there is just no way to truly explain the feeling when that round comes out of the tube. Miss it alot!
Thanks for making an informative and complete video. There's a lot of vids of Soldiers and Marines cranking off mortar rounds, but not a lot explaining the equipment or the battery structure.
Who knows.. with the way things are going, one of your viewers may end up having to be your next civilian ammo bearer. :P
Hi, what branch are you in? I am curious, would a mortar team be considered infantry or artillery? Also if you could do a super slow motion of your video and 1:12 you can catch the round firing off, it looks sick! Hope you got home safe from your tour.
great vid.. great.. listen in one of my manuals " lee " it says not to use reloaded ammo in glocks.. is this true?? they say the chamber is not supported. due to the ramp feed.. all i have is a glock and i just bought a press.. i feel pretty dumb as i should have searched this first. this is great man :) glad you made it in one piece still from what i saw from the pics the dusk or evening was very beatiful this video was great and i'm sure alot of people respected it too badly you lost nelson :( IEDs?
Thx for sharing your video together with some very informative comments. One question if I may: does the gunner wear hearing protections? I can see all the onlookers covering their ears, but the guy who drops the shell obviously can't do so, but is at the same time closest to the weapon.
Generally everyone will have hearing in although on a call for immediate suppression there are some times you just dont have time.
In the vehicles you'll have CVC's on most likely wich have hearing protection on them. The Army actually calls for double hearing protection, lots of luck lol.
How often are there accidents such as a hangfire, misfire ....what are the most common or dangerous situations that occur when using these weapons?
I would like to think that the devastation caused by an accident would necessitate that these systems work 100% of the time, but like everything else nothing is actually 100%!
Just came across your channel, thanks for your service.
When I became a Drill Sgt with the 104th Tng Regiment.
Since I was the "FNG" I was rewarded with one of these bastards back in 1988.
I never, ever wanted to take it out of the arms room- its heavy, takes 12 people to run it properly but it can sure but down a world of hurt if you need it.
This Mortar system is a 120mm so it is usually mounted on M113s that are equipped as Mortar tracks. They have a rotary base plate system that can be used to adjust for deflection and elevation much easier than a ground mounted unit.
The base plate is about the heaviest part of the system and takes 2-3 people to move easily.
The tube itself can be moved easily by 2 people but some people are dumb enough to pick one up on their own.
Uh, fail the math so you don't have to hump mortar parts comes to mind! ;)
11B infantry is good. 11C mortarman is bad- you carry a 40 pound ruck, and a 45 pound mortar parts plus ammo? Now hump that for 35 miles or so,,,,you'll see 3 sets of tracks in the dirt: Your left boot, right boot and the one in the middle is your balls dragging on the ground
*chuckles* Kid, rank comes faster in the Army, and its slightly easier than the Marines.
However, the Marines frankly are better at fire an manouver and attacking.
Under ideal conditions, you want the Marines to arrive first, then the Army comes in about 4 hours later- the Marines are exhausted, the Army guys get the credit because they're nice and clean- for doing the work the Marines did!
I love the Marines! Really! They are the finest self propelled sand bags ever created!
The Marines work very hard for low wages- and until fairly recently they used cast off army equipment that the army had declaired was worn out.
I have a lot of respect for the Marines- they go into places where anyone with a lick of common sense wouldn't go. They train very hard- hardest training I did was whats in the fridge or on TV- seriously!
Interesting video,I noticed that man on the left was wearing one of those old LBV's from the 90's and the guy next to him had a MOLLE FLC in 3 color desert.

So? The basic design of this mortar goes all the way back to 1917 or so- I can't quite remember back that far.
The heat sink on the bottom with all the fins is nice to prevent breech explosions from ammo cookoff.
The aluminum baseplate is a HELL of a lot lighter than the cast iron bastards we had.
The tube is still a pain in the ass- or can it be broken down into 2 pieces for transport?
Trailltrader 1 year ago

just to ask a question how smart do you have to be to be a 11c do any of the 11cs carry rifles or any firearms at all and have any team ever been killed
golfisgreat123 2 years ago
Well the main weapon of any gunner on a mortar system is the mortar itself, however, all 11Cs carry at least an M16 if not an M9 as a sidearm.
Usually, there is at least one SAW gunner per section, but that depends on what equipment is available.
A few of our guys had M203s on their rifles as well.
11C is not for everybody. Good compass reading, understanding of maps and navigation, and mandatory domino skills.
