You probably ruined a perfectly good Cure record for that ... just bought my Mother-in-law one for Christmas ... a Soundwagon that is, not a Cure record.
This was manufactured as a joke product in response to a late 70's review in 'High Fidelity' magazine of the LIRPA VDRS (vehicular disc reproduction system) featuring a similar little car like device that played your records. This "review" by the magazine was intended as an April Fools joke (LIRPA spelled backwards is APRIL). Never the less most people believed it and asked where they could buy one.
I'd never use something like that to play a record. Hell, I don't even like to play LPs on my portable Wildcat player. How does that little gadget get the forward momentum needed to keep it from skipping?
Speaking of vinyl killing, my sis picked me up a 4-disc set of 78s for me to play on my acoustic Victrolas...except they were VINYL 78s! What the heck, the music stunk anyway so I tried one. You can actually *see* the grooves being shaved away as the record spins, ouch. Oh well they still sound pretty good for the first 2 or 3 plays and my Vics can't reproduce the high notes that are being ground off anyway : )
Wow how does that thing stay so 'on track', 33 record grooves are mighty fine. Surprised it doesn't just skip and slide all over the grooves. Is it just running on rubber wheels with nothing attached to the center spindle like a fine wire that I can't see, or (?)
@songpool5 It's not a CD player. It's similar but uses no less than six lazers, for alignment, speed measuring, and the actual playback. And no to @jason0x21 they are only 9000 Euros.
Man I gotta get one, I have like 100 vinyl just sitting around that I got at a garage sell for like $10.........I know I wont like most of them so this thing would be epic to use trying them out. They are expensive though and thats weird because they dont have many expensive parts. I would like to see some big company pick them up and make them in a bunch of colors and different models. Im sure people would buy a rat rod vinyl killer. Hell they could sell them in hottopic, they sell vinyl
Search for "library of congress capturing recorded sound through imaging" and then click on the link & it will take you to a veritable treasure trove of information concerning research that has been undertaken by the Library of Congress and physicist Dr Carl Haber who has done most of this research. I remember dreaming about this kind of stuff 30+ years ago as a teenage record collector - of course I couldn't work out the details myself, but I wish I had written down some of the ideas! :D
@rmomomo I like techno, but only on vinyl :) Played with a real stylus, none of that laser crap. Did you know that most laser vinyl players do not play colored or picture discs!? Neither they can read through areas full of dust/grime/mold on a disc. So...Traditional Setup with Stylus 1-Laser 0
well the needle really scratch into the rills xD that's also the reason why those vinyl killers are called vinyl killers because they destroy the rills :D
the needle on a record vibrates with the grooves in the record and the vibrations are amplified so you can hear the song on the record, it's not the same as a cd.
They did come out with laser turntables in the 80's, but they are very, very expensive. For professional use. I don't think they were ever perfected though.
@peppeddu But isn't the whole reason for spinning vinyl to stay as analog as possible. That's the whole reason they sound better, they haven't been converted to 1's and 0's and then back to analog. At least on my system they haven't ;-)
I guess the needle and the tires ruin the grooves...cheap needle. I would love to see it play the last song on a 12 incher, near the label. would the turn's be to narrow?
mine slowed down and got quiet. The battery tester said my battery was fine. Mine sounds all warbly now. It is a poorly engineered cheaply made piece of crap!

I know, but if a camera can pick up the reflection of the grooves made by a laser we can reproduce the music.
Anyway, I just found out someone has already done it.
