This video is blocked by EMI in the U.S. Visited St Maarten twice in the last two years. Wish I could see this video. I know it was BAD! Still a sunken ship in Simpson Bay..sure there is other damage still around besides Mullet Bay. At least they are working on it now.
i live in st-martin.. i was there when it hit the island, National Hurricane center in the USA.. said that luis was a cat 4 but the weather center in Guadeloupe said that it was a cat 5. when it touch st-martin it was a cat 5 and when it pass over st-martin lose force. before it hit the islands it was cat 4 yes, the eyes wall passover st-martin and anguilla.. well the winds change..
I'll never forget the extent of damage - as if we were bombed! Survival stories were shared at Le'Select by sailors who road it out in Simpson Bay, fighting wind, sea, and the many charter boats with no one on board tending their anchors - loose and slamming into other boats - many vessels sank to the bottom of the bay with people on board. A man who made it to the safety of a rock on shore told me there was a green shimmer in the sand the day after the storm - dead humming birds.
Wow can't believe I came across this. I guess Luis still haunts me a bit. I was 25 and the summer manager at a small B&B called the Horny Toad in Simpson Bay. I too have some footage. CNN and others picked it up at the time. I will post if I can find it. I vividly remember the whole experience leading up to and after Luis. I truly saw the best and worst of people. I hope the better angels of our day prevail during our next "Luis".
i moved from holland to sxm 4 years a ago and the worst 2 hurricanes i experienced were hurricane omar(cat.4) in 2008 and earl(cat1/2) in 2010...boii yo i rlly wouldnt wanna kno what itss like experiencing luis
@tropicaldan no luis was most of the time a cat 4 but it did go up to cat 5 for quite some time, while we were stuck in the eye wall for almost 2 days. i remember it very well....
I was pregnant 8 months during Luis, lost the roof of our house in Cul De Sac, saw boats flying in the air, people knocking at our door with nothing left, one friend died and not much we could do against mother nature. It is scary how they did build so much houses on the beach in Orient Bay for the next hurricane, hope people will leave the island as fast as they can if they have the choice to do so. , I just show this video to my son Dylan Louis...he was kicking during the hurricane...
I had just turned 9 on September 4th and flew into the country on the 4th. We huddled in the middle bedroom of our house on Spinel Dr. for the whole storm. Luckily no damage.
This was 20 days before my 13th birthday. I thank God for my parents faith. My dad always got good insight into hurricanes and prepared well but prayer did the rest. God really protected my family. I lived in Cape Bay. We did not lose our roof we did not even have a leak and our vehicle's windshield was not busted like everyone else. Thank God. I did not even see the major destruction as my parents really sheltered us and did not allow us to go outside. Thank you for the reminder.
I arrived to Sint Maarten 4 years later to Medical School AUC. All the buildings around the capmus were destroyed as well as mullet bay gold club and the house on the cliff owned by Farah Diba ( wife of the Shah of Iran). All were reminders of Hurricain Luis, and everyone was still talking about it in 1999. I arrived Aug 28th 1999. In November of that year Hurricaine Lenny hit and it was almost a repeat of Luis. But the ilans was prepared this time around. I love Sint Maarten /St. Martin....
Oh I remember this exactly..even that guy on the weather channel..gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes to see it all again..thanks for making this. It is good to remember.
Dam i remember that shit i was 12 years old lived in suckergarden SXM. Rip up the place. People looting like crazy stealing TVs and fridges with no dam roof on there house and no power.............LOL
i was on radio st barth to informe the peoples there's a hurricane coming , never see thinks like dat , it's like you drop a bomb on the island , thanks god for is protection ...........
Was on Anguilla during Luis when the eye passed over with 170mph winds. We had no running water or electricity for 4 days at which time I was able to finally leave. British Coast Guard came down to fix the airport tower.
i remember tha day like yesterday! tha was a low blow for us but we come up strong and the whole island had really come together. i going always st martin: french quarter 4 life
i remember luis well, and when u took that drive simpson bay it was like being there, cause i remember those boats when we took a drive down that way. i experience luis on l.b. scott road, and its quite a thing to have lived through.
Thank you for posting this. My husband and I love the island and visit 3 times a year (for the past 8 years). It is amazing to see how well the regrowth has come.
I was stationed in Antigua (Naval Support Activity) while in the US Navy and rode Hurricane Luis out. What an experience to say the least!!! Thanks for the video.
Yes, well done! it reminds me so many things like every Sunday after Luis is was (in Grand-Case, but I guess every where else too)cleaning time. Even if Luis had devasted the island, people for few weeks were so nice to each other, I remember this huge solidarity...
man, i totally relived that day (and the subsequent chaos) by watching this vid. Great to have this documented like this...keep up the good work! (and check out my vids :-)) cheers mate

Luis was a cat 5
MultiShady89 6 months ago
@MultiShady89
Lotta people here think that but 140 mph sustained winds means it never quite made the cat 5 status.
These things are decided by the National Hurricane Center and not me, but you check it for yourself easily enough online.

@caribbeanoceanvillas
It may have felt like it, but Luis never made cat 5 status, 'only' a very strong cat 4.
But being in the southern eyewall ensured we got maximum damage.

I found this so hard to watch. It is very well done and I know we must remember, but, oh, how painful it is.
I hope SXM never has to experience anything like this again

Is it too dangerous and crazy?
