Standard russian military surplus ammunition often has a core of mild steel, giving the rounds much more penetration than a normal FMJ. They are technically just shy of armor piercing.

@YESMAN977 Rimmed rounds headspace on the rim (no surprises there). Non-rimmed rifle cartridges headspace on the shoulder. Making large capacity box magazines for rimmed cartridges is somewhat of a challenge. Check any 20+ round .22LR mag... the primer end of the cartridge zigzags this way and that.
One thing to remember, most of the time when a bullet is shot through a car's bodywork it will enter in one piece but break up into multiple pieces straight out the other side, so hiding behind a car is of no use whatsoever.
Wether this is applies to AK-47 ammunition I am not certain.

The 7.62x39 round loses velocity fairly quickly and its not as high as a 7.62x54R, which is a full size battle cartridge. The 7.62x39 was designed to be more controllable in full auto than 7.62x54R, which is what the Russian's were using beforehand. A standard FMJ round at that distance would most likely stay in one piece at that range, but I don't know for sure, it depends what ammo they were using.
Only God was keeping the holder's of the Assualt Rifles (Romanian AIMs) from being former Navy Seal Marksmen, what a bloody day that would've been. Thank Jesus none were killed in the entire incident.

Pistol caliber body armor, lvl 1 or II probably. Easily pierced by most common rifle rounds. You need a ballistic plate to effectively stop a 7.62x39 round. That's what our military uses on a daily basis for protection against 7.62x39 and 7.62x54.
@JRCOBRA2001 most the the akm's the cartels from central America are using now, are cheap wasr 10/63s being purchased here in America and taken illegally over the border and converted to full auto (which is fairly easy to do with hand tools but is a federal offense here in the usa unless you hold the proper license). its cheaper to buy them here for around $400 and convert them then it is to buy one on the black market for around $1000 or so as I've been told.

7.62 round is heavier and deadlier than a 5.56 or 9mm round. The AK-47 has actually been known to go through bullet proof vests when the person has been shot several times as well as going through walls.
So in theory the AK-47, AK-74, RPK, etc contain armor piercing rounds.
The amazing thing about an AK-47 is that you could bury it in sand, snow or mud and 1, 2, 5+ years later dig it up and it would fire perfectly.
@Handherps AKM is AK-47. The m just stands for "modernized." Same kind of gun, just a few modifications in how theyre made and a few of the parts. Same company, same action, pretty much same everything. If you had an AK-47 made before 1970, and a AKM side by side, you couldnt tell the difference.

@FilthTribeFTP Thats not true. AK's are not 'horribly innacurate', they are accurate enough to be effective in most Urban engagements, but their accuracy generally never matches up to an AR-15 rifle. The AK47 wasn't originally designed to be accurate at long distance anyway. The soviet doctrine at the time consisted of mass human wave attacks towards the enemy firing in bursts. The weapon was designed to be reliable, which is why its so popular, its accurate enough, but could be better.

I'm not an expert on this, but I think that this occurred BEFORE there was a strong SWAT with an actual tactical (sniper) force, and no matter how many standard cops there are, it would be like trying to kill someone with a feather. These guys had it all planned out, and were very wealthy from previous robberies, so they had enough funds to purchase top-grade equipment. The LAPD was just not prepared for this magnitude of a problem.

A standard FMJ round at that distance would most likely stay in one piece at that range, but I don't know for sure, it depends what ammo they were using.

@bjonesgtaw lol that's true. The AK-47 does have higher than average ability to penetrate armor though, compared to the NATO 5.56x45 mm rounds, but in no way should it be considered "armor piercing". We have the .50 cal for that.

@bjonesgtaw you do realize that the chinese imported ammo in the 80's that were steel cored...which can penetrate body armor....even though that was not the original purpose the steel was suppose to help stabilize the projectile....it's very well possible they could have had that "armor piercing" ammo....that ammo is no longer importable....on the high velocity matter....that is just bs to put fear in people...there are waaaay more ammunition that is actually high velocity..7.62x39 is average...

The likelyhood of them using actual "armor piercing ammo" is highly unlikely esp when the shell casings I've see from the actual shootout are cheap surplus ammo. Like "wolf" I'm sure it was fmj rounds which can penetrate small thickness' of mild steel up to probably around 4/16 but that don't qualify as actually armor piercing rounds

Pistol caliber body armor, lvl 1 or II probably. Easily pierced by most common rifle rounds. You need a ballistic plate to effectively stop a 7.62x39 round. That's what our military uses on a daily basis for protection against 7.62x39 and 7.62x54.

@JRCOBRA2001 most the the akm's the cartels from central America are using now, are cheap wasr 10/63s being purchased here in America and taken illegally over the border and converted to full auto (which is fairly easy to do with hand tools but is a federal offense here in the usa unless you hold the proper license). its cheaper to buy them here for around $400 and convert them then it is to buy one on the black market for around $1000 or so as I've been told.

7.62 round is heavier and deadlier than a 5.56 or 9mm round. The AK-47 has actually been known to go through bullet proof vests when the person has been shot several times as well as going through walls.
So in theory the AK-47, AK-74, RPK, etc contain armor piercing rounds.
The amazing thing about an AK-47 is that you could bury it in sand, snow or mud and 1, 2, 5+ years later dig it up and it would fire perfectly.

@FilthTribeFTP Thats not true. AK's are not 'horribly innacurate', they are accurate enough to be effective in most Urban engagements, but their accuracy generally never matches up to an AR-15 rifle. The AK47 wasn't originally designed to be accurate at long distance anyway. The soviet doctrine at the time consisted of mass human wave attacks towards the enemy firing in bursts. The weapon was designed to be reliable, which is why its so popular, its accurate enough, but could be better.

The thing is that the AK like you probably know not the inaccurate POSs that everyone says, those that say they are inaccurate are just probably a hick with a new toy or just a bad shot overall.
I mean sub-MOA AKs really disprove the myth of a inaccurate AK.
Most engagements happen inside of 300 yards so either one is better, the 5.56 really needs a 20" barrel to truly be effective in 1 shot however.
If long range shots are on the table, I'm gonna break out the AR10.

And AK is noticeably easier on the ears (even with protection). And it has better trigger. AR is much more accurate but AK is accurate enough.

I'm not an expert on this, but I think that this occurred BEFORE there was a strong SWAT with an actual tactical (sniper) force, and no matter how many standard cops there are, it would be like trying to kill someone with a feather. These guys had it all planned out, and were very wealthy from previous robberies, so they had enough funds to purchase top-grade equipment. The LAPD was just not prepared for this magnitude of a problem.
