I was fortunate enough to see SRV at the Civic Center in Poughkeepsie NY in Nov '85. Most of his performances around this time were fueled by cocaine and bourbon, but he played the guitar with a passion rarely seen, I'm thankful for the time I got to see him.
I had the pleasure to see SRV 9/22/83 on the second leg of his first American tour at the Playground South in Jacksonville, Fl. I showed up at the venue with some of the local pickers. No one had ever seen this guy and all most of us knew was that he was a good player and had picked some tunes on Bowie's Let's Dance LP. He opened the two hour set with 3rd Stone from the Sun. After the tune everyone just stood there with their mouth's open. This m@#$%^&*(&$er could play...diehard fan ever since.
The funny thing about watching this is realizing that if somebody were handed this guitar now and accidently dropped it the owners would have a complete spastic COW...
Incredible can't descibe the moment captured here. Stevie Ray Vaughan understood it and he got it! I have yet to this day, to see any guitarist come close to the vibe and the spirit of what this song is all about!
God created Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. They in turn created their soul driven craft that will never be touched for eternity! I am so blessed to see and hear...magic!
@DaveGuilmour I respect what you're saying. But i have to say. Also Hillel slovak (old rhcp) did it with the peppers and please add him to those three. theres is also beautifull! Rip hillel
This was my favorite video to watch when I was like 4, and it still is! But I remember I used to get scared because I couldn't stand watching Stevie beat up #1 like that! Haha!
yeah i dunno. this isnt really some of SRV's best work... you can tell he was pretty high... i almost cried when he was beating up his #1 like that. Its like he was beating up his wife. well he was, if you think about it :S He lacked the passion i love him so much for.
i always thought there was just a lot of fuzz and crazy distortion and stuff. but turns out i could do that too, with just a strat and a whammy bar! :P and incredibly high volume ;S
You got to remember, a guitar is called an axe. And think about how you use a woodchoppin' axe - and the fact that what it's made for is really, really using it; like beating the crap out of it to cut up firewood to keep your lily-white ass warm and possibly attract some philly that needs some warmth too, that's actually what's your axe wants you to do. Do it.
Go Stevie Go!! Jimi Hendrix squrited lighter fluid on his guitar and set it on fire during a concert!!! He didn`t like the fact that The Who got top billing over him. He said that he would put on a show that would blow away The Who. And he damn sure did!!!
jimi was an unknown in the u.s. the only reason he was even IN that concert was because mccartney insisted it. to say he was upset that "the who" (a worldwide group already) got top billing over him, is just ignorant. AND he got the "burning" idea from "the who" who would destroy their instruments on stage. his performance at that concert was what made jimi "JIMI". but dont let the facts get in the way of your rant.
Sorry about that rcarballo1, I didn`t mean to mark your comment as spam. My mistake. I meant to hit the reply button. Jimi played this piece at Monteray Pop Festival. Stevie is doing a fantastic job on it. Let`s agree that Stevie always put on a Great Show!!
The first time i saw SRV he was an unknown and opened the concert for the Police. He did 3 summersaults foward and backward, while Jamming Away on his guitar perfectly! He played behind his back and plucked the strings with his teeth!! When the Police came on stage The people screamed..Stevie..Stevie over and over untill he came out a took a bow!! No one could shine as Brightly As Stevie Ray Vaughn!!
I saw his tour with Jeff Beck. SRV absolutely kicked butt, and, although Beck is a great guitarist, people were chanting "Stevie" until Beck brought him out on stage with him. I got to see SRV twice, and he was absolutely overpowering.
Doda26: Jimi Hendrix did NOT play 3rd stone from the sun at the Monterey Pop Festival. He played Wild Thing, and incorporated a lot of feedback and acted wild during that, like SRV in this video, but he didn't play 3rd stone from the sun.
dude, I'd never do anything like that with a vintage american made guitar. I'd do all that and more with a squire, but one must commend SRV on his bravery. He did that on his #1
Uh, Now I know why that old 59 fender strat looks like it does. Where was his head at? Heavy Medician I guess, great tune though. a little to much roids.
I agree with strattosphere. Didn't he do cocaine or something? And I think this hole trashing his guitar thing is just a tribute to Hendrix. Because SRV loved Hendrix's music.
sorry, think i miss spoke. I think what srv did was amazing and i agree with bluesman. I just don't agree with the title of this thread. Like i said owned a few strats and watching this brings me back to the day, lol.

You couldnt do that with a Les Paul, it would break!
As much as I like Stevie I hate to see this kind of stuff. Why would a great musician want to fuck up a perfectly crafted guitar like that. I love my strat to much to ever abuse it...and its not even a SRV edition!
Stevie was on all kinds of heavy drugs during this period in his life before he cleaned up. To him, the music was all that mattered. the guitar was merely the vehicle through which the music was to come, but it was never more than a vehicle to him. The music was all that mattered. He could afford another guitar.
who is, strattosphere or aivilik, neither is because there both right, SRV is what strattosphere is like with his guitar when he was sober, but when he was what aivilik sais he was like then it was just a vehicle, and he just doing the same as Hendrix did, besides i don't think aivilik thinks its OK to do it i think hes just telling strattosphere why he does it, and he along with strattosphere is just making a point no ones a retard
ok, sorry but the "i love my strat too much" theory is blown. have u seen the fender video of stevie's guit? take a look and then get back to me about fucking up a perfectly good guitar. Have you heard of relics, lol?
dude im not saying it was alright for him to smash it up and NEITHER WAS HE, because it wasn't, all he was doing saying as to WHY he was smashing his guitar, and that was because LIKE HE SAID...SRV was on heavy drugs, alcohol, the whole lot in the mid 80's (when this was shot), you never saw SRV do this in the before he got hooked in the early 80's, or after for that matter in the LATE 80's, what gave you the impression either of us thought it was OK to do that is beyond me
