Saw this live at a university cabaret; I thought it would make a huge hit - I believe they released it as a single in 1983, but in the US it didn`t get far. About 5 or 6 years later it started getting airtime again, this time however `went viral` so to speak, and went #1.

@raisedonaradio -- Correct you are. My station was one of the few in the U.S. who played the heck out of it on the first release, and being a college town, it was a big local hit. Thank God some Program Directors back then hadn't sold out and still took chances. I was SO pleased when on the re-release it finally caught fire w/ the rest of America. Epic, epic love song. I listen to it at least once a week.

I met my first real girlfriend the same night we heard this song for the first time, and it was game over at that point - this tune was indelibly ingrained in my brain for the rest of my life. Here we are 20+ years later and every time I hear this song I still think of that girl!!

artanisdio: The copyright date on my lp is 1982. I bought the album after hearing it on WJMU, Decatur, Il. The lp differs slightly from the cd, especially the last song, Give Me Rock and Roll. It's well worth hearing the lp.

I would go with daveW dates. Mine are drug/ alcohol blurred from back then. But, the story behind the dates is true. And that's the amazing thing, ALL the money went to the singer/ songwriter for once ! Talk about getting the last laugh! He's retired since back then with his own studio.

1978/80 the song was released. The band was from Ontario Canada and completely bombed when released. You could by it for 25 cents or give it away. Then a year or two later with the band gone and the record dead the singer/ songwriter decided to buy back the rights to his songs.
