Steriods helped these ladies race well. There is no doubt these ladies could not have performed nearly as well if they hadn't taken steriods. They started using them during the 70;s and on into the 80's until testing became a reality. It is a shame because the training methods such as speed work and weight training has improved (I was a weightlifter) yet the women's times now in the 400M don't come close to the times in the 80's.

This is what systematic doping does! Their world records shouldn't be valid any more. There are documentation about the systematic doping that the east Germans were doing. Among other things they had created a very fast acting steroid, Oral Turinabol, that would be out of the system before the tests and there were no off season tests these days.

And we knew they were cheating these days, but they didn¨'t get caught. Same thing in swimming.

the answer to your question is not as difficult as it might seem. the reason why

the germans are not as successful as they used to be is because their sports camps and sports schools have been lost after the wall came down. german girls did take 3rd in Berlin in the 100 meter relay, they also have a female swimmer who has been winning gold for years. so its not like they dont win anymore, its just that the number of medals has decreased tremendously.

There is no actual proof of this apart from a anti GDR report that was sponsored by FRG. Marita Koch was at the top of her game season after season after season. It might have been different if she was only good for one season like the so called Flo Jo(1988) but she wasn't. She was top class from 1977 to 1986.

the testing really started in 83 (there where tests done before that tho), BUT there was and are ways to get around the tests ..and often positive tests were covered up.

people where caught back then yes,..but the majority of the cheaters werent.

Evelyn Ashford didnt race 400m seriously. She only ever did it as part of her training buildup. I believe her best is in the 51 sec region. She really favoured the 100m.
