It was an issue with a failing motor, or multiple motors. Its kind of hard to "teach" someone or something to get back up when their legs refuse to function.

What's truly sad is that in order for this robot to achieve this simple task of movement, it requires a large amount of ASIMO's procesing power to maintain balance and to plot its next step. We bipedal animals walk forward without much thought at all.
