  • She needed to keep drumming. She loved it, and it put space between her and the audience.

  • he looks like Dracula

  • I love karen Carpenter

  • E P I C - - N U F F S A I D ! ! !

  • I loved Karen Carpenter. What a voice and when she sang with her brother they blended so well. Gone WAY too soon. Miss her!

  • SHE WAS SO BEAUTIFUL

  • Karens talent makes her over the top attractive, what a pleasure by todays standards. Seeing her like this inspire's your applause. This lady had it all. A rare life.

  • Wow, this video is amazing! I find new information every day that just makes me appreciate her contribution to the human race even more. Thank you Karen...

*Aside* Why is the concentration solely focused on her heavenly voice, what about the entirety of her talent?

    Happy new year everyone!

  • Little known fact: John Wayne wanted Karen Carpenter to play the role of Mattie Ross in "True Grit", but the producers decided to go with a known actress and Kim Darby got the part instead.

  • she made it look so effortless

  • helll and she had sex appeal thats why I REMEMBER HER good tunes too.

  • She was fucking brilliant .... Her brother sucked ass ... mother you should rot in hell

  • Legend!

  • she is so good with the drums :)

  • What a gifted girl. One of my favorites.

  • wow havent heard od The Carpenters before but they are AWESOME

  • Karen : I love you !

  • WOW!!!!!!! :)

  • from now on , she's my favorite drummer !

  • Holy shit.

  • A brother playing the piano and a sister on the drums. Ever so talented, the both of them. What a great loss, Karen. The Like of Brian Jones, Joplin, Hendrix and the like. But she's not part of the group. Excuse me, she needs to be re-established in the musical history of the 20th century.

  • looks like a phil colins case to me

  • How can she sing and play drums at the same time,

  • she didnt look anorexic here

  • Queen of drums!

  • Ya, it would have been interesting to see her as a stand in for Led Zeppelin's John Bonham. :)

    I'm just being a wise-acre. I really love Karen.

  • The record company apparently thought Karen should be out front singing instead of behind the drums! Either way she did both great!

  • Karen Carpenter always said : I am a drummer who sings...

  • Beautifull Youtube 2

  • Wow. She's right up there with Keith Moon, Ringo Starr, John Bonham, and Dave Grohl (to name just a few. Don't get upset if I didn't name somebody you thought should be mentioned).

  • Is there also a full version off the bit between 0:12 and 0:48? Possible online, thx.

  • wow no shit

  • She reminds me so much of my grandmother! They look completley alike.. She also sings and she makes the same expressions and movements as her.. and shes also very thin..

  • Holy shit...I had no idea.

  • @totalfloat WTF I was also unaware and ive listened to the Carpenters for years.. way to go 'you tube'

  • karen carpenter is my hero

  • @saintdestroy It's sad that no one gave her a hero sandwich.

  • Wow.

  • Rest in peace, Karen. You're still missed. And you losers trying to hijack another vid with your idiotic comments can go elsewhere.

  • Maravilhosa!

  • Look at her hands, she's really a very good drummer; she doesn't use match grip (not all do) and this form was very popular then (ala Buddy Rich)

  • So many reasons to love Karen Carpenter - the fact that she was a great drummer is an added extra!

  • @bubonicbieber Better at what? Don't come in here and blaspheme against real talent by comparing them to that femmy little twat Just-a Beaver. Show the slightest modicum of intelligence and decorum by using your boneless tendrills to type in some of your hero's threads where they might be welcome. Twit.

  • @bubonicbieber come on!! better? at singing and looking like a girl maybe???

  • @bubonicbieber wtf

  • @bubonicbieber LOL almost amusing......

  • Lars Ulrich eat your heart out!!

  • She died of anorexia. Or rather complications from the disorder - I think her heart stopped.

  • @Z9er yes, she poisoned herself by taking ipecac syrup everyday as a laxative for months. That simply destroyed her heart. :(

  • Damn!!

    Why did she died??

  • DAMN! Playing drums is hard enough without singing your lungs out!

  • Marvelous talent and a beautiful person. :-)

  • One of the most tragic stories in music history, yet one of the least known, or talked about. It's really horrible that no one could reach her before it was too late. American music lost a major talent when she went away. Her voice made me misty, and her drumming inspired me. When I was a young lad, watching her on tv was a treat. I looked up to her as much as Buddy Rich or John Bohnam. She really seemed to get joy out of slinging the hickory. She was really hot too! I miss her.

  • @tmont007 I love Karen, she had none of the arrogance of that A hole Buddy Rich and all of the fun!! She was truly a talent and her voice was the best!!!

  • Luv

  • just from watching this video, you can tell she was a really cool person

  • She was at least as good a drummer as vocalist, and she had one of the absolute all time great voices. If she'd played keyboards full time she would have been a virtuoso. She seemed to be one of those people who, whatever her medium of choice, could express herself musically at the highest level.

  • She could play all right ,seemed like a lovely person too

  • My favorite part of this video is when Karen Carpenter is playing with herself.

  • Karen : Quiero ir al Cielo para verte eternamente .

  • Isso é o que se pode chamar de talento...diferentemente de hj em dia, onde proliferam as Spears e Oncés da vida...

  • Quelle femme cette Karen ...et super gentille ....!

  • Karen was spectacular at the drums, no doubt about it, but there were many excellent drummers around too. In comparison her voice was Top of the World, and she remains the best female vocalist, ever, in my mind. So if she was to only choose one, I think she had made a wonderful choice. RIP

  • She was a natural musical genius, with a highly developed sense of rhythm, harmony, melody, phrasing, and pitch. So much to say, so little time. Thank you, Karen.

  • Anybody know what song they were playing from 9:13 to 9:30, and when/where that was recorded? I'd like to see the entire video, if it's available!! Thanks.

  • I was going up the stairs in the music building at CSULB in January 1971 (I was an art major) when I turned the corner and looked into the open door of the organ room. She was sitting at her drumset and her brother was at the organ. They were rehearsing "We've Only Just Begun" before the world ever heard it. Oh, GAWD what a memory!!!

  • @ClyneDDW WOW......what a beautiful memory

  • ya know some may say she was really corney, but, I would say she really is.

  • @SoSeventies Well, ya know, some might say YOU were really petty, but I would say you really are. :O))

  • Karen was a very talented lady. She got her first set of drums in 1964 and together with that amazing voice she was unstoppable.

  • She sounds great on "Dancin' In the Streets." To the haters, why does Hal Blaine's participation in the sessions upset you so much? It's not like they did the sessions against their will.

  • Damn I did not know she played drums!

  • Playing drums and being lead singer is difficult. Few can do both at once and excel, but Karen Carpenter was one of them.

I certainly cannot agree with the “looks weird as hell” comment below (what gets into these people????), she did look her best when singing at the front, where a lead singer really belongs.

  • She was such a great talent, slick on the skins...loved her...such a sad story.

  • the multi-talented karen on the go . . . . . . . for sure the angels are very happy to have you.

  • yay the lead sister!

  • QUEL TALENT !

  • You can't learn this kind of rhythm- you have to be born with it.

  • she looks weird as hell

  • @TheApplecheesepie This is the problem with young folks nowadays. They care more about the how a musician looks and what they're wearing or who they're dating than the actual music itself. I weep for this generation.

  • @jundossantos why you hating on what i'm saying? I never said anything bout her music.

  • @jundossantos

    We had junk parents? :P

  • @TheApplecheesepie Good for you...comments like that are part of the reason the poor lady starved herself to death. Your mother is so proud of you, I bet.

  • @whatanightmare1 Not as proud as yours :)

  • i fukkin love karen!!! i have several tattoos dedicated to the carpenters!!!

  • Singing and playing the drums, 10x harder than playing the piano and singing

  • We would rather heard you sing Karen! Love you soooo much you will never know!

  • Thaks for posting this! I never realized how good she really was.

  • She was much better than Meg White.

  • I always found it amazing, how the hell does she sing so complicated stuff while drumming, it is just awe!!

  • Gracias por hacerme llorar y hacerme sentir una infinita emoción, TE AMO KAREN!!!

  • Karen's playing is great but this is some of the absolute WORST video editing I've ever seen. DUDE! you should be ashamed that you actually posted this nonsense. You didn't come close to giving Karen the respect that she deserves.

  • Why oh why dis her bother stop her druming? No doubt he is a talented songwriter but he is a selfish meglomaniac little so and so who I am sure contributed to his talented sister's unhappiness

  • gracias a ella soy baterista!

  • Beautiful! Beautiful! Bravo! Karen absolut! RIP Karen, with many drums and songs.

  • @KeepEuropeWhite And keep dickheads like you in it.

  • <3

  • What the blank is with the PG rating at 6:40?? Why would anyone need parental guidance with the Carpenters??? They're about as G-rated as they come!

  • amazing

  • NIce finds... too bad you did a horrible job cutting all these songs up. Makes it tough to watch without being annoyed. Still, Karen's always been a solid little drummer.

  • South park?

  • Not only is Karen Carpenter one of my favorites- but so is Mr. Ed Sullivan.

  • She made drumming look easy, just like she made singing sound easy!!!

  • Why is there a comment about Justin Bebier on EVERY music video, get over it people!

  • Look how far down the shit hole we've gone since the 1970s. Lady Gaga???

  • Why couldn't the press have just let her be happy.

  • Just one note: Karen Carpenter tried several instruments before finding her calling as a drummer. Her persistence to play in her brother's band was amazing.

  • Damn the person that made her come out from behind the drumkit

  • as a former drummer in an 80's band, i will confirm that she was REALLY good. She seems to do naturally what takes the rest of us many hours of practice. I was considered very fast in most percussion circles, but her speed may be as good or better, and her timing was impeccable ! Talent like hers is ridiculously rare (possibly unique) and i say a big AMEN to teppei01's comment - take beiber & the rest of these wannabes & put them back on Amatuer Hour where they belong.

  • @akibubba1 I'll second that motion, put them back to amatuer hour.

  • What an absolutely AMAZING talent!!! I miss her!

  • I love the fact Karen was always drumming with a huge smile on her face, clearly showed she was loving it. Such a shame a wonderful musician such as herself was taken away too soon.

  • Damn she's good. REALLY good. If she wan't a fabulous singer she could have been a top percussionist/drummer. Of course, in those days it just wasn't the done thing for a girl to do. These days, of course, things are different. Probably.

Documentaries I've seen all talk about how good a pianist Richard from an early age etc was but none of them talk about Karen's drumming at all.

  • she was so pretty! and a VERY talented girl! :) LOVE YOU KAREN! WE ALL MISS YOU DOWN HERE! :)

  • What a talented woman.. just fantabulous...

  • Yes Karen was a fabulous drummer but most of the recorded work on drums was by legendary studio drummer Hal Blaine. Karen synched to his tracks live.

  • @reverendglenn Yes... and Cubby OBrien (former Mouseketeer)

  • @reverendglenn Hal Blaine's website has the union contracts showing he was indeed the drummer on most Carpenters' recorded tracks.

  • @bennygoods Who cares? The documentary Close To You states that on their early concert tours, she did the drumming & the singing, & was great at both. Maybe the record companies wanted her to focus on vocals in the studio, but considering how things turned out, I wish they'd have let her do her own drumming, the way she heard it in her head. Maybe because she was a perfectionist, it would have taken her a little longer than calling in a session guy, but there's synergy in blending both together!

  • @bookguitarguy It was that the concert audiences couldn't see her behind all the drums. They compromised. She came out front during the ballads, but still drummed on the upbeat numbers. She was always too shy at first to be a front person but she eventually loved it as well.

  • @tubiebrother Apparently, w/her brother making most of the decisions (song selection, etc), & record contract/touring pressures, she felt that she had very little control over her life. Some believe that this caused her to focus on her eating/dieting habits as one thing she COULD control -no matter what anyone else told her to do- & she may have rebelled at their attempts to control her in that area. Drums were her first passion, & she probably resented giving them up. She CLEARLY loved to play!

  • @bookguitarguy People want to see the singer out front, at least some of the show. She still was able to drum.Saw pictures of her drumming in '76 and they didn't tour much after that. She probably wanted to drum the whole show Sometimes you have to let the audience have their way. I agree with a lot of what you said I know that her mother loved her in her own way.I don't think Richard and Agnes limited her drumming. That would make her stand out even more in a way. They didn't try to make her sad.

  • PS. No offense, but your version is the "official version" given to the world by the family. It appears that her mother was cold & unloving, there were rivalries between Karen & Richard, & w/Richard the mother's clear favorite, Karen tried to keep them happy, & sometimes went along w/what Richard wanted to keep peace/get her mother's approval (which she apparently never got). Speculating a bit based on my understanding of the facts, but there was something wrong in that family, & it killed her.

  • One last thing. To me, her father was a non-entity. The mother seemed to be the dominant one, & he seemed too weak to stand up to her. Karen may have chosen to be the opposite of her mother- supportive of Richard, while burying her own wishes in the process- including the drum decision. Unfortunately her rejected solo album really hurt her, & her failed marriage devastated her as well-then tragically she died before she could come into her own as a person/artist. Sick family-sad & beautiful girl

  • I really miss her!

  • 2:47 - the BBC version is MUCH better...

  • FYI -THE PEOPLE CLOSES TO KAREN WHO ACTUALLY KNOW "THE REAL" STORY WILL NEVER RESORT TO WRITTING A BOOK, I ADMIRE THIS, RESPECT IT, & THANK THEM.

  • @vmuto1 I hope you're not implying that there was sexual abuse...?

  • What great memories!

  • Some people in the music industry has sensitivity and gift to hear and create music like the Carpenters. But nowadays its so hard to find- they just look at face value but is absolutely tone deaf and can't carry a tune at all.

  • Oh no she didn't just slay the Lucite Ludwig- Bonham now has a run for his money wherever they are....

  • I had no idea she was a drummer

    thanks !

  • God Bless Karen, she was such a phenomenal talent. You can already see in the video how skinny she is, the anorexia was already on its way to taking her life. Rest in peace Karen.

  • oh karen is a drummer.i didnt know this.lovely video.hats off.

  • Thanks so much CrescentNoon. You made me realized that I didn't know her really and she was an incredibly talented artist.

  • people who ways girls can't be good musicians need to watch this, idiots

  • @culturevulture123 Funny how the only people bringing up the gender issue are those of you in here throwing out the "omg c, girlz can totalli play!!!" card. How about just celebrating her talent and not her sex? Tools.

  • @xreddragonx I am celebrating her talent. I'm simply correcting the idiots that don't

  • people who say girl's can't be good drummers needs to watch this, idiots

  • From 2:43 on, it gets awesome! :)

  • She's a G

  • mega gay

  • what's the name of the song they play at 9:13???

  • damn girl, she looks so sexy without takin off nothing at all, just like singers nowdays

  • Thank you CrescenNoon I did not know this.

  • KAREN! Woot Woot!

  • Karen's (so called) friends have finally surfaced after all of these years. Unless you were in the family, or a member of the posse your contributions to Mr. Schmidts book was marginal. I respect the fact that you basically didn't give the author any information, BUT you still participated in this book. This is not being a friend to Karen.

  • Karen Carpenter is a badass

  • take idiot bieber give us Karen, queen, John lenon, Maurice Gibbs, Clarence wijewardena, Milton Mallawarachi, and H R jOTHIPALA

  • Just cried after watching her video "We've only just begun." She inspired me as a teenager and thanks to her I am now what I've always dreamt of being - a drummer. :) Karen was one of a kind - still is and will forever be

  • shit i fell in love

  • DRUMMER at the FRONT and SINGING DAMN GIRL YOU ROCK

  • Groundbreaking woman!

  • Her absolute joy in drumming is wonderful to see! She was my idol in the early 70s when I was the only girl in the drum section of my junior high school band for 3 years, listening to the taunts of "girls can't play drums" day in and day out. Karen proved that saying to be completely WRONG. What an immensely talented musician and singer she was...a lovely lady who left far too soon.

  • @cintamprod Good for you!! Karen was always at home behind the drums, and she is in my top 5 for best ever drummers

  • Would she be alive if she stayed on the drums? I miss her so much,i cry.

  • Is she not great? my, what a talented musician. you tube gives me this opportunity to listen to her regularly. i'm a very big fun of hers since she started singing. i'll die loving her music.

  • WOW she really is awesome!!! Karen Love U!

  • She looks so happy when she plays drums.I wanted to enjoy more and more of their works with her playing this fabulous instrument. Seeing her in everyday wear like just a shirt and pants makes me feel kind of close to her...I love it. And I want to play drums like her!

  • I din't know she did both simultaneously of course i know about her drumming but simultaneous awesome wow goddess of music i mean literally!!!

  • very talented woman...the good lord took her from us at a very young age..

  • Karen just proved that women can also play drums..:)

  • I miss her so much. Perhaps the greatest voice of her generation. God what a talent.

  • god, you take justin bieber and give us back karen carpenter. or john lennon. or michael jackson. anybody

  • @teppei01 Agreeee I even take the Osmonds just take bieber away , I dont care who the give us back

  • @teppei01 i would prefer it if he took katy perry instead, life i just to unfair

  • @teppei01 i love your comment. so true. bring her bak, take him or one of those over rated, no talent tiny boppers. big thumbs up on your comment.

  • @teppei01 you are absolutely right, justin bieber doesn´t deserve to be in this world, he sucks!!!!!!!

  • @teppei01 ...Funny how no one gave a
