The Hind is an excellent gunship but its heat signature from the engines make it a easy target for shoulder fired surface to air missiles. It also is its own worst engine because in a sharp turn it can chop its own tail rotor off with the main rotor

There's something scary and menacing about the Hind. That said, Russia's newer helicopters and the Apache will pwn it everytime. Its prime advantage now is its dual-purpose nature.

I'm recomending you watch "charlie wilson war". It's a great film and anyone that likes watching Hinds get pounded can appreciate this movie. Also i think those figures are mixing up total soviet air craft shot down with only Hinds. The hind wasn't the only helicopter and air craft used and i doubt the stinger has a system where it identifies the diffrence between MIL-8 and mi24 helicopters. That's the company name, but more specifically Artem Mikoyan created the company and Mikhail Gurevich was the cofounder, or they both founded the company, I'm not sure, the point is the creators were Armenian/Russian and the feared MiG fighters were made by an Armenian.

MiG was started by two people, one of RUSSIAN descent and another of Armenian descent, only the part of armenia where he is from, when he was born there, it was part of russian empire. nothing beats the Huey, and these days its still kickin and its also a transport chopper. Prefer that over the russky chopper. and it can be fitted with weapons too. been around alot longer and has more respect among the troops in my country. Gotta love the Huey.

The Hind's great and all, and so is the Huey, the Hind's out-classed by the Apache, and in the Huey's case it's out-classed by the BlackHawk. The Mi-28 Havoc is a great replacement for the Hind, although personally, the Hind looks like it will kill you alot easier.

The Apache is used for Anti Tank missions, whilst the Hind is used for Infantry support now, The KA-52 and the MI-28, so how can you compare them?
The Hind is made to be full of Spetsnaz or Special forces drop them off and support them on their mission.
Now comparing the MI-28 and the Apache would be more valid.

eddy, the soviet uninon was ONE COUNTRY. You seem to be mis informed on exactly what the USSR was. The MAIN reason the russians lost in Afghanistan was they spent 16 years there, the whole time the U.S. had armed the insurgency with Stinger missles and crates of explosives. The mountainous regions REQUIRE air transport, and with the copters getting downed, the ussr just gave up. The same happened with the U.S. in Sumalia(only the africans weren't armed with missles...)

The Hind is an excellent gunship but its heat signature from the engines make it a easy target for shoulder fired surface to air missiles. It also is its own worst engine because in a sharp turn it can chop its own tail rotor off with the main rotor

I'm recomending you watch "charlie wilson war". It's a great film and anyone that likes watching Hinds get pounded can appreciate this movie. Also i think those figures are mixing up total soviet air craft shot down with only Hinds. The hind wasn't the only helicopter and air craft used and i doubt the stinger has a system where it identifies the diffrence between MIL-8 and mi24 helicopters. War figures like this are always abit dodgy..especailly in the 80's when were talking about the mujahaden

oh wait.. the wikipedia has a list of downed helos in afghanistan: MI-6 , MI-8, MI-24 and MI-10, still the numbers are incomplete.. it states the 333 figure but not how much of each type..

Actually before the stinger was introduced the Hind was uncountered and rained hell on the mujahideen. The stinger changed everything and was only countered with heat insulation and flares. Also i maintain your firures are wrong. 1 per day is alot more than 270 or even 333. And off topic,,any helicopter would have been demolished by stinger attack. "stingers" are awesome. Just because you've seen charlie wilson's war doesn't make you a professional.

The Stinger could easily home in on either of the side-facing hot engine exhausts, located at the top of the fuselage near the rotor hub and bring down the helicopter. 333 Hinds were lost in combat
