@dunebasher1971 : "Over time, this story has mutated into the idea that Previn learned his entire part from scratch in a single taxi ride on the day of recording. " That is strange, because Previn himself has said in interviews that he had not managed to make rehearsals, but merely read the script. Are you saying he is lying?
I really miss Eric and Ernie. I'm only 13 and they are the best ever double act comediens I have ever seen in my life and that will stay the same forever! May they both Rest In Peace! xxxx Love them both!!!!!! Great sketch!
Wonderful - I never get tired of seeing this! It's comedy at its best perfomed by experts at comic timing who we don't seem to have anymore.
Remarkably, Andre Previn had no chance to practise this sketch beforehand and actually learned his lines on the plane coming over to the studio. I agree that the expression on his face after hearing Eric's piano playing is priceless!
@purplestar9902 FWIW, the story that Previn had no time at all to rehearse is something of an urban myth. The reality is that he did rehearse, but only for three days rather than the seven that Morecambe & Wise usually insisted on. He had to leave rehearsals to go and see his mother, who was ill in New York. Over time, this story has mutated into the idea that Previn learned his entire part from scratch in a single taxi ride on the day of recording.
This is a work of genius. There just isn't anything like this being made anymore and the world is a sadder place for it. I challenge anyone not to laugh long and loud watching this. Comedy today is driven by nastiness and cynicism and only serves to increase the appeal of comedians such as Morcambe and Wise. Long may we watch and laugh.
oh yeah i remember this episode tht was a very hilarious morecambe and wise are the most famous and best comedians on the planet!! Eric is the most funniest!!!!
Pure class. You can see where Vic Reeves got some of his inspiration from. I know that the Morcombe & Wise show had writers for them, like Barry Cryer, who is a writing god. But Eric Morcombe carried this show. I miss this show so much. Fuck off Ant & Dec, no recent comedy duo with ever match the Morcombe & Wise Show.
Vic does look like Eric and he could have a go at playing him perhaps on stage - but there was really only one Eric Morecambe - when you watch this sketch he gave everything to make us laugh - total professional and a naturally gifted funny man.
I love Ernie's face when he suggests "Could we get in touch with Greig ?" at 2:57

@purplestar9902 - I heard that. The sketch was originally done in the Sixties - but with no famous conductor. Andre Previn really MADE the sketch.

NickXDDX 3 years ago
What is the tune that Andre Previn plays after "Eric's" version of the piano concerto at 7.31 ish?
thespanishonion2 3 years ago
It's the theme tune to "Face The Music" hosted by Joseph Cooper, it is called "Popular Song" and was written by William Walton for the Facade Suite.
