I am not just talking about brute strength, I am talking about all aspects of athletes in general; mental training, core strength training, flexibility. It is all more advanced than it was in the 80's. I have played sports at a pro level and can see the change in professional athletes today compared to years ago. No disrespect to Jonah or Geoff. It is just technology.
This was shot in Belkin squash courts at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. It is one of the best courts I've ever played in. Though, I sometimes missed the ball on backhand side with the glass wall. I actually was in Ithaca when this exhibition match was played. I really wished I was there. Few years later, I saw an exhibition between White and Kneipp at the same court and it was truly amazing. Squash ball looks like pingpong ball when these guys hit.
Here are my thoughts on players from the 80's and players from today. Look at every other sport now, compared to twenty years ago. The quality is far better now. It is because athletes are far more knowledgeable about training, diet and not to mention technological advances in not just squash but all sport. Athletes today are far superior to athletes 20 to 30 years ago and athletes in 30 years from now will be superior than athletes now.
How do you know? By your own admission you`re only a kid. Your logic doesn`t follow. Jonah Barrington and Geoff Hunt were more sinewy muscular than just about any player since. They were not born that way. They honed themselves through brutal training.
Bueno, digan lo que digan White es el hombre!!! Los egipcios vuelan pero su juego es hermoso. Well, whatever you guys says White is the man!!! The egyptians flying but his game is beautiful. (Excuse my little english)
I may be slightly biased, but from what older players tell me, the game has moved on from when players like martin were around, granted the khan's were wizards, but Shabana and Ashour are capable of more than just holds and flicks. The game is more about flair now, i think Martin influenced that a lot, but it has been developed by people who have mastered the art better than him, even if he was the first to properly base his game around it.
he is, but this is a great example of the evolution of squash. martin's preparation is just longer...the pace might be similar, but white is just on every ball because brett has that old, predictable stroke. this video is classic...
hehe you must be joking... long preperation?? Example please...
Brett has amazingly strong wrist and fast swing and his prep is very similar to Johns...
Brett and John where both on the psa tour from 1993-1999 and Brett had higer rankings the whole time except for april 1999 few months before he retired at the age of 36!
I watched alot of old John White games and he was much quicker and fitter 10 years ago...
You are, as before, overestimating squash today compared to what it was not longer than only 15 years ago... Hehe thinking so much has happened in such a small amount of time is ignorant.
There's 10 years between them in this match Brett is 39!!! He still gives John a good run.
it's an old argument - i guess every other sport has progressed except squash. the bit about the rankings is hardly relevant - jonathan was ranked higher than EVERYONE in 2005...but he was at the end and lots of guys ranked lower could handle him. it's getting quicker by the year - see: ramy ashour.
I think you're wrong that alot of lower ranked guys could handle him... he had some injuries. He could still beat guys today in the top 15-30 for sure.
jp attained the #1 ranking prior to it's publication in january '06, but whatever. i think martin is awesome...in fact, jonathan gives him lots of credit for developing his game. i'm just saying you can see the evolution of squash between these guys. if that seems 'ignorant', i imagine you hear some of those comments yourself.
Maybe not, they're both big lads. The two of them take up a lot of court. Could also be the camera lense, some of them kind of distort to get the wide angle.
John white is always entertaining to watch.

Go look at some of Jahangir matches and training vids. In my mind there is no PSA player today as physically strong as he was.
Advanced techonology is immensely overrated in sports. Its all about putting in a lot of hours of hard work, being determined and genes also help.

This court seems narrow to me.

These are arguably the two hardest hitters the game has ever seen and its a pleasure to see them on court with eachother. Wish there was more!

I can hit harder than these two.

So, I'm thinking a box of balls was brought for this match?

JP never reached nr 1 in 2005... he did so in 2006. In 2006 he for example beat Greg Gaultier 3 times! Greg is one of the fastest players around...
And by the way JP won 4 psa tournies out of 12 in 2005 so to say that lots of guys ranked lower than him could handle him shows how much you know...
