  • Are talking heads in action, references in old books and scripts, in 1rd world, but here the way ...other way but the same target!

  • @reaperette I have some friends who took me on one of their runs, they say that NY has bad trash. You get sick easier there because some shops put rat poisoning on their trash. If you're really interested in Freeganism, try it in Canada first.

  • Awesome. I would love to go on a freegan tour of NY ome day.

  • i hope these people die

  • @ 6:35 is that a blunt? great vid though

  • if the markets would jusy mark a few items at 75 percent a day or so in advance of expiration, there would be no need to throw out in the first place and recoup some small capital

  • The fact that this HAS TO HAPPEN pisses me off to no end! Every shop these folks visit should be dropping their older foodstuffs off at community pantries or America's Second Harvest. Most of this perfectly decent food goes to a landfill somewhere.

While we aren't freegans, my hubby and I are still growing cilantro and basil he found in a dumpster behind a Vietnamese restaurant. We rooted it and grew it. I'm actually GIVING my excess away to a restaurant.

  • @jfulbright Good for you. Us Americans in the States here make up 3% of the world and make 65% of the worlds trash. A lot should be donated but the FDA steps in and says that dated food can't be sold after a certain date. Like starving people care if the food is after a certain date. What a waste, and very unnecesary too!

  • i nearly live by trashmeals only. in a small town here in germany. the best is the creativity you get by having all this stuff you didn't plan :)

  • freegans aren't weirdos. they're helping the earth. every time they don't buy from a market or they don't eat out they become eco-friendly. don't call someone a weirdo who's saving your ass in the future.

  • If they ate out at a reseraunt or bought food at the market they would be helping the ecosystem by giving business to the markets so more people can have jobs.

  • While I hate to see food wasted, who's to say some junkie didn't just toss a used hypo into the garbage? Who would want to eat that?

  • Questions PLEASE ANSWER. If There's All This Food Behind Super Markets, Then Why Aren't Homeless People And Needy People That Starve From Day To day Know About Stuff Like This?

Also... Is This Against The Law?, Can You Do This In Broad Daylight Without A Police Officer or Some Type Of Authority Banning You?

And Why Haven't I Heard About This?, I've Been Behind Supermarkets Many of Times And I Never See The Food You Speak of.

  • all righty then

  • what are the songs in this vid?

  • i am pentagon by the make-up, i wanna be adored by the stone roses, and consumer by shelter.

  • oh thanks i couldnt read all the names

  • I could not go home and think about the people men women and children I would see in my store's dumpster looking for food - I would keep the food in containers I bought in the refrigerator as we "wasted" it during the day - we would keep records of wasted food and write it off our P & L - the shelters would microwave hamburgers and chicken nuggets for the inhabitants - I had to stop because one of the homeless was plotting to sue McDonalds by claiming a fake illness - the other homeless told me

  • I worked for McDonalds in the late 80's early 90's - the reason why most store's food was always fresh and hot was that it was thrown away if kept in the "bin" after 10 minutes - so a lot of good food was thrown away at the end of the day - I was so alarmed at homeless people digging through the trash in back (also making a mess) that I started to save the food and deliver it to the shelters in the neighborhood at the end of the day on my time - this was against company policy of course -

  • Right on man, they should give all the food away that is still good, but going to be tossed! I just tossed stuff in the fridge that I kept, and heated up the next day! PEACE, FREEDOM!

  • awesome i love it

  • The only things I find odd is it seems if you found frozen dinners and what not that they would be spoiled (I was watching Oprah today and they were talking about taken things like that).

  • That is a valid concern, but from my experiences, they find their food merely minutes after the garbage is thrown out on the street from the grocery store. And of course, discretion is heavily weighed upon when selecting food, akin to how you use your discretion when buying the same food within the store. Thank you for your comment.

  • yes they are wasting their time because:

they stop food from going to waste

    they get free meals

    they donate food for shelters

yes you are right, they aren't helping...

  • the food hadn't gone bad!

they checked the food to see if it was eatible. they didn't take the mouldy food.

  • no i'm not

  • "it might sound ironic: we want our garbage clean" -- ha ha! brilliant!

  • Freegans KNOW that noone in a capitalist society can abstain from capitalism, but one can participate MINIMALLY through what/how they choose to consume. This happens often and CAN be successful. Ever heard of a boycott? Imagine if half the population did this? Also, MORE food will probably go to waste because of OVER PRODUCTION. Do you know how many pounds of food we throw into the ocean to keep produce prices balanced? 2. People CAN produce things for themselves. People have vegetable gardens.

  • I applaud Freegans and their efforts. I think what you really see in this video is a form of protest. This exposes a sliver of the bigger issue of waste in our society. And hey, if you can save a few bucks and protest more power to you.

  • I agree with you.

  • This is highly unfortunate. No one should have to go into the trash to get food. And the food youre getting in the trash was once a commodity which means it was created only through some form of exploitation, so again youre not solving anything. Im not trying to knock freegans because i understand your intentions, but again, highly unfortunate and ridiculous, im sorry.

  • 1. They don't HAVE to go into the trash and get food, they CHOOSE to.

    2. I'm sure they know they're still dealing with food that was a commodity, but the key word here is WAS. They're minimizing there own consumption and the affects of over production and wastefulness in our society. They realized that the STRUCTURE is the problem, so avoiding paying money into the structure is effective protesting. That food is thrown away meaning it has already lost it's value in the market.

  • No, its not effective because even if theyre not paying money to the system, the system is still uninhibited by their actions. Even if you had a mass population of freegans feeding off of wasted materials, it still wouldnt do anything because eventually consumers are forced to buy? Why? Because we cannot produce for ourselves? Why? because we dont own the means of production. You cant abstain from capitalism, its all around you.
