  • his mouth makes a lot of word sounds yet he says very little

  • I know Alan Watts was talking about unity being the truth of our existence, but his words and this music did not fit together.

  • I just want to know what the music is. Ha.

  • The music makes this impossible to enjoy.

  • Is there anywhere i can find a full version of this without music?

  • @Cvmars90

  • knowledge is wisdom and wisdom is fact. But all facts are all based on human conciseness pre-thoughts to paper! Thoughts are “normally” based on sight. So my thought. Can we trust someone else’s sight to formulate how we are “suppose” to live?

    Y R U, U? Y B U if it is based off someone else’s sight? B U 4 U!

  • @4thsubaru shut up, you should stop trying to think for yourself, some people should just listen and follow like sheep, you are one of these people. big ideas confuse you, you don't want to be confused... do you? just leave big thinking to big people, you're not even a sheep, you're a lamb, tender and juicy stringy meat, take your seat. sit down clown. i was born under the dragon and the water-barer, a natural leader in each and every. a real rain man who can and will expose and oppose tyranny.

  • @4thsubaru a knowledgeable man knows the tomato is a fruit. a wise man knows not to put a tomato in a fruit salad.

  • did you even test the volumes before overlaying the music?

  • why do we humans feel that we are so special and there is something more to us than what we perceive physically ? is it because we have this advanced mind? ego? ... animals don't think like us..

  • can someone turn that music down a lil bit? i cant hear him talking.

  • download the video and use a program to extract the music if you find it unbearable. it's fine to muah

  • next time try not to make the music so loud boo.

  • He expressed it very powerfully. Excellent.

  • ok. is it possible to exclude users froom searches? BAD CHOICE putting music behind this.

  • Alan Watts is . . . . BATMAN.

  • The music and video work really well together... but whats that bloke going on about in the background!?

  • please remove this stupid music!!!

  • how boring oO

  • how did he get to know so much...?

  • @peruface good question :)

  • Music track makes it sound like Alan Watts is planning to take over the planet.

  • you should re upload this without the music

  • - An eternal and absolute ego, or a relative and temporal ego?

  • An EGO made this video.

  • @lateralus411 - but would the video exist at all if you (the viewer) hadn't watched it?

  • @WKRPinCINN Yes and no. Neither yes, nor no.

My comment was in reference to people always trying to add bells and whistles to messages that easily stand up on their own. People's ego's are always trying to take something and make it "better" or "more interesting". Alan Watts words do not need "weight" added. Enough with the novelty already.

  • It really is too bad about the too-strong music - otherwise I would show this in class.

  • I like the music it adds weight to Alan Watts words

  • all that there is, aliens and all. even those microbes on jupiters moon, titan, thats me too

  • god damn it, why would you use that music. and that loud, i don't get it.

  • joe rogan

  • @171mosborne dude shut the fuck up

  • @171mosborne Joe Rogan always has awesome links. :-)

  • THE MUSIC SUXXXXXXXXX

  • if you cant follow what hes saying because of the music then the problem isnt the music

  • @IronicallyVague We are all suffering. We could just wake up, but people are too scared of letting things be.

  • if you find the music distracting, your not there yet. Alan Watts is probably the greatest philosipher i have ever come across. If you like him you will probably love Manly P Hall. Thanks for the post.

  • Sad children, finding the music distracting. FOCUS. LEARN TO FOCUS. You'll never get through life if you can not do something as simple as focusing even through distractions.

  • @LuminusX Focusing is spotlight consciousness. I was listening to every word he said, forming my own opinions, and enjoying the music and the beautiful scenery. (The slow pan during a time-lapse is something I've never seen before.) I guess my floodlight is working fairly well.

But what he says reminds me of an analogy I made years ago, that we in the universe are like ice in water - the same stuff just arranged into different patterns in different areas.

  • @ShawnRavenfire I like that analogy. I think I'll use it, if you don't mind.

  • @LoneQuietus Be my guest. :-)

  • A myth is an image in terms of which we try to make sense of the world. ~Alan Watts

  • Great imagery! I think the music works well as a counterpoint to the imagery and Alan's topic~it stands out. Thanks

  • this music is really distracting

  • great work, thank you.

  • what he was saying was beautiful truth, but the music seemed to stimulate emotions that kind of fabricated the actualities of what he was pointing out.

  • Everyone puts music to these talks. It's unfortunate, especially when it drowns out the talk.

  • people only seeing what they dont like and must tell the world that they dont like it, this is their world and not yours and not mine, it must be to there standards, remember that next time so you dont incur the wrath of criticism of gods like these who have bitched here. thinking so highly of themselves because they know what how you should do it but wont do it themselves

i liked this video, just because i didnt have it in me to make one, so its better then anything i did for i did nothing

  • Alan Watts voice does not need background music.

And especially this (background) track is RETARDED.. so is the Video

  • As with all Alan Watts videos, great lecture, overbearing music and graphics.

  • lose the music.

  • fuck remove that background music. it sux, can't watch the video as well.

  • Good video, but PLEASE turn down the background music. It makes it even hard to hear his voice sometimes.

  • "That's why I put it on this morning, to demonstrate this point."

    ROFL

  • It's interesting but the background music is too dramatic and holyywood like.

  • what gets me about watts is, he has a round-about way of stating the obvious and he presents it as if it were some kind of profound truth that we all don't understand already. whats the point?

  • isn't it obvious?

  • no, the reason for stating the obvious is not obvious.

  • lol that in itself IS the point, people forget the obvious. The mundane is the phenomenal. The most profound and deepest truths are usually the most simple. The nature of existence simply "is"

  • sometimes we need to be reminded not to think so much, we have our head full of so much crap thats pushed on us, that we forget the obvious.

how often are you connected with your breath and not up in your head thinking about something,

breath is obvious, but can you experience it with out thinking, with out being drowned by the chatter in the skull

  • @xapxnecro Do you understand yourself then?

  • whose self?

  • really?? this is second nature to you?

  • The point is to realize it, if you haven't already.

  • i agree 100%

That's how you have to accept art.

    it is what it is.

    love it or leave it.

    aavit anyway

  • accept the fucking video for what it is and stop bitching about the music. get over it. move the fuck on.

excellent video, keep them coming. do what you do

  • stupid effin music!! :(( Alan watts - myth of myself part 1-5 is without music and can be found here on youtube.

  • i give u 100 dollars if u get the music out....,or just read the posts!!i mean,id love it without music.

  • Such a great video and they destroy it with this music :S

  • that music is distracting

  • yep, that just goes to show that you lack the latter kind of consciousness ^_^

  • I agree such a beautiful and profound lecture obscured by music that is much much too loud.

  • @guitarpick678 But if you have love in your heart, if you are seeking truth and are therefore a truly religious person, if you are no longer ambitious, no longer pursuing success, and your virtue is not leading to respectability - then your very life will help to bring about a total transformation of society. j. krishnamurti

  • Comment removed

  • @guitarpick678 Very poorly chosen indeed.. It's not even necesary, this mans voice is enchanting enough.

  • it is amayzing how:

awareness of consciousness is only available when something with-in you is awakened and observent to things in reality witch others on a daily bases are not.

consciousness as it may be- is all there is. but something within us does not comprehend it. i keep wondering why?

why are we so seperated from ourselves let alone others.

  • Great stuff always from Prof Watts! 5*

    Thanks and subbed

  • does anyone know where these awesome anumations come from?

  • that is rowdy. You're incredibly correct. The question isn't whether love is a universal truth, it is, the question is whether your eyes are open, and you're aware of it.

    your entire paragraph was astounding.

and folk music is beautiful. haha.

  • great speaker but the music is annoying.

  • question>? riddle me this batman...if we are all interconnected which i think is true, why in the case of this argument is conciousness even needed? do we need conciousness to live? no!....are we concious of 99 percent of the things we do ?....no! is there really free will? no! so what is conciousness? the ability to observe the self? and know that we are observing ourselves?....orgins of conciousness?...christianity! morality!...what do we do now?

  • consciousness helps drive the force of natural selection, with out it one cannont make a tational or irrational choice, if simply must decide

  • uuuuuumm pop tarts anyone?

  • are you serious? or this sarcasm . i hope its sarcasm . christianity the origins of consciousness?? ha ha .

  • what does christianity have to do with morality? the cult is internally contradictory and immoral. christianity is a false answer to that question just like every other answer including my own. everything is nothing, which is everything, which is still nothingness. this is not a god, the origins of consiousness is that we are dreams of dreams of dreams of a vision of a vision of a dream. WITH NO DREAMER! this isnt real. this is everything.

  • cool worldview, bro.

  • The music score is from Braveheart....it didn't distract me any....I really like that sound track.

  • Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.

  • the music is too loud

  • SHUT UP GUYZ!!! ITS THA MUSIC FRUM INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!one11!

  • Agreed. I compose film scores, and this music was truly at odds.

  • man the music really killed this one for me. Was great up until it though :\

  • Red Lite Rocket: once you hear him, he becomes alive in you, its not necessary for anyone to add or delete any of its content as it lives in you, it needs you to live.

    Love

  • dramatic music was unnecessary. i do love alan watts however.

  • It would depend on how you describe a "game"

Is it your concept of what a game is? Or is it his concept of what a game is?

  • i don't understand why he would add a generalisation about people who believe in heaven or riencarnation. and his last few comments about everything being a game completely contradicts his whole teaching. bummer... but i guess, as all the rest of us, he's only human!!!

  • i revise , you CAN"T call me an asshole for not believing in a b or c unless i deny your proof x y or z. and laqtor, your not a productive member of society please remove yourself from the gene pool immediately

  • i do not remember saying that i do not like alan watts or that i did but without being overly abrasive as i did before i will explain, you will notice that the comments that preceded me were ridiculous. please think and think and think again before you comment and for that matter dont comment on theorys that have no basis in reality. you can call me an assholf for not beleiving in a,b,or c unless i deny you proof x,y,or z

  • The addition of the music made listening to the lecture hard.

  • can anyone tell me what the image/ symbol is about 18 seconds into this clip? :-)

  • Kinda looks like kundalini energy? I don't know

  • this music track is so freaking distracting. pick something more fluid at least. eff.

  • Calm down danielmeltz....lets agree on the fact that we both love alan watts...and have ideas that we want to share with others, and thats ok.....just dont be a typical dickhead......and just accept that u might not always agree on other peoples opinions because you are a *3@!*%$#

  • what is the relationship of conciousness and intelligence ? Intelligence to me is to solve your problems, to be able to think about things in images on a same problem with a lot of information, and then there is wit!!

if you're part of the world and do someone wrong you do yourself wrong because you are part of him.... it sure doesn't feel that way...

every organ has its limits, we can only eat as big as our stomach, we can only see as far as 100 m what are the limits of the brain?

  • if we can only see 100m how come we can see stars.......lol ur brain limit is as much as a rasian

  • well but don't tell me that you can see the stars clearly, last time i saw they were shiny dots... you can see them on a telescope but you can only see as far as the limit of the telescope... I just wanted to express that we have limits, and to understand concioussness we should understand the limits of our brain.. and i haven't found a page that explains the relationship clearly or why that is not applied to education..

i have a friend that cannot see the A in a poster when he is 1 m away

  • He can see the A, he just cant read it. Every thing u said in that statment makes you sound like a child.

  • Why was the music necessary? Alan Watts is awesome sans music.

  • ok 69shelfish please don't comment on other videos ..ever, everything that you said in both comments was fucking douchebaggy idiotic gibberish. Do you think your deep? intellectual? what about coherent? All of you what the hell are you writing, Its like your all high . Aprilshowersss, you are the only person who truly understands life and how it works, not these idiots who blather about bullshit theory's that make no fucking logical sense then go to poetry slams and think there special

  • your the fucking douche bag haha go piss on your self

  • we think as humans we are unlucky!...but the fact that we live and actually have the chance to die is all the life u will ever need.....which is what disproves infinity....if time was endless u would have never said those things because it would have already happened....but time has a centre....i hate to make readers feel important but we will always be in the centre because things just are....i repeat things just are

  • kayak...true true....but when u die even if u become nothing and enter an infinity of blankness u were once something, a human...someone alive on the planet earth

  • i find it hard to believe that when you die there is nothing. to have absolutely nothing you can't have even the tiniest speck of molecules anywhere period. To have nothing there would just be nothing forever but how is that possible because the universe has a lot in it. There must have always been something in it because you can;t have the universe without always having something there in the beginning. What is that something? who knows...

  • the music ruins his conversation

  • flood light consciousness

  • Variety is the spice of life! ;,( loved it!! :)

  • stumbled, bookmarked and forwarded.

  • Great, very interesting, good video, but the music...it detracts from some of the points that he is making and drowns out the message slightly. The music fits, it's just a bit loud. Sorry to bitch about that as it really is a very interesting clip and ties in with a lot of stuff that I think about and search for answers to all the time. Thanks for putting it together and posting it.

  • STUMBLE!

  • The conclusive answer to this problem will be reached when AI becomes sufficiently advanced.

  • and what is this problem you're referring to?

  • the myth of the self, etc.

  • Stumble.

  • Stumble

  • stumble!

  • dont beat me up too much, but this is not that im sorry but, what he says about "spotlight" and "floodlight" consciousness may be true if you are alive, but he seems to be implying that when you die there will still be something still there, no matter how detached it is from what we experience of consciousness while alive. This is the same sort of wishful thinking that created afterlives. You need a functioning brain for any consciousness at all in any form, and when you die that goes too.

  • not that "profound", i meant for the top line to say...

  • I would suggest that consciousness may be life itself - the whole of life; the whole of creation - and that you and I may be a flavour of it.

  • As I understand what he's saying, that second kind of consciousness is not our awareness, it is our brain and its environment (Inside and outside) going on by itself. So that consciousness isn't only our brains, but also environment, they're exist in.

  • You weren't listening properly. He was pointing out that the whole world is what survives - and it is that same whole world that is active in you (and me and him) when we are 'alive'.

  • Yes, I admit that his message wasn't that clear to me. Still, its not much of a stretch to realize that when you die the world lives on...so i dont understand why people are so impressed with this. Im just trying to understand. I must admit im more of a scientific thinker and I do think that philosophers can look far too deeply into things that only need a glance. So maybe im just on a different wavelength than this guy. But, yeah, I die, the world lives on. So what? im still nothing in the end.

  • That depends what you think you are: what it is that generates and sustains the thoughts you occasionally have. Watts is pointing out that the sustaining cause is the whole world. Realize your identity with that, and the problem of 'survival' goes away.

  • Ok.. What I think I am is a series of chemical and electrical reactions that combine in such a way that the replicating molecules in my body (DNA) need them to, to replicate. Every impulse every thought every instinct i have is because i am a living being with certain goals established by evolution. For example, i must survive as long as possible to guarantee i have adequate time to reproduce and to care for the young, therefor i have a natural desire to survive. im a natural chemical process.

  • And since my mind is a series of chemical processes designed to keep me alive and able to reproduce and/or aid in the survival of others (to grossly simplify) When i die, my mind stops. my atoms are still there, all the chemical i was still exist, but there is nothing left of who i was as an actual physically or mentally living being. from my perspective the light simply goes out at death. and i become as i was before i was born. nothing. no time no inkling of any kind of consciousness.

  • and i become as i was before i was born. everything

  • what i meant by "I" was my mind. there's no thinking, senses, time or anything without a functioning brain. if youinterpret it like the chemicals and particles that make up your body leave you and go onto other things after death that's fine... and true. is that what you mean by being "everything"? But this is about the mind. how can one say that there is any kind of mind after death when a brain is what makes a mind? some proof would be fascinating and would make me happy. anyone have any?

  • @Aprilshowersss well DNA is something that seems to do something despite NOT having a "brain". even minus the brain it has "mind" or some form of language and dictation to control nano-particles. We also see the function of many life forms that do not have brains. they still appear, when observing the functions, to be conscious. The leaves of trees move as the sun moves, to receive a more direct input of light. vast active living intelligence systems.

  • The thing we search for in alcohol, drugs, pornography, chocolate chip cookies, and every other kind of addiction is something we will recognise. Alas, we're going in the wrong direction.

  • wtf, i just saw that exact mold clip two vids before i watched this one. wtf....

  • lol, are you stumbling? cause i am and the same goes for me XD.

  • wtf!! hey dude we must have similar interests, yea i'm stumbling. haha thats awesome. alan watts is the man!

  • About time somebody started doing some serious homage to the beloved late Alan Watts. I approve of the music.

  • good music but turn it down a notch so we can hear these words of wisdom better

  • I agree, the music is not necessary, it distracts from the message.

  • great video, one of the very few i've had to watch again the next day

  • very nice...thanks matt

  • awsome video...Alan Watts a Great teacher

  • i think this is kind of a soothing illiteration of what hes trying/ or is saying.

the music kinda makes me feel uneasy...

  • I listen to Alan Watts and I read Osho and Eckhart Tolle and I see myself turning it all into dogma. Comfort food.

  • I dig the music. I think everyone is free to play with Alan words, and to celebrate them with the music and art that each person feels from it. So don't trample other peoples perspectives on the material, maaan. Dig it.

  • Are you kidding me? I thought the music choice was amazing! This is the most well edited Watts video out there! Thank you to whoever made it, brilliant!

  • i agree i think this is brilliant editing... i consider it more of a piece of artwork rather than a speech.

  • You know, I really thank people for posting Watts' work online. However, I don't understand why they insist on BEATING DOWN Watts' words with ridiculous music selections. The music in this video is so wrong and distracting, I had to turn it off. Luckily I already have hours upon hours of his work on MP3.

  • take out the fucking music

  • Whats that thing flying around at 1:49 ??

  • an unidentified flying blimp.

  • Great lecture

  • This makes to much seance. I dont see a flaw.

  • The musik doesnt fits for this one,

    Why so dramatik ?

  • What are you so negative in trying to down this video. if you dont agree thats fine but no need to spread your negativity.

  • your comment is only acceptable if you understand this video to be religious and not scientific. otherwise, i'm not spreading negativity, but POSITIVITY, by encouraging the discovery of truth. i think that makes you the pessimistic one, but no worries. i don't take or mean personal offense in most of my debates :P

  • lolololol this is as much scientific as what it is spiritual, kthnx. He is saying that you are an intrinsic part of nature, one will all that is and any seperation from that complete whole is an illusion. Naturalism 101 lol.

  • okay, your comment honestly confused me. i don't know if that was supposed to support or refute me lol. in any case, i think your interpretation of what he is preaching is inaccurate, but i couldn't make sense of this jumbled mess: "one will all that is and any".. so i can't say for sure.

naturalism is far more logical than what is being explained in this video. naturalism is science, this alan watts is religious/spiritual philosophy.

  • haha, the word I meant to use was, "with" instead of "will". Being one WITH all that is. Naturalism and this, whatever, all in all it's all the same. Depends how YOU see it.

  • It's an illusion of our flawed instrument of perception that we see ourselves as separate. We are all part of the human whole, we inter-depend completely between each other and our environment. We cannot exist apart from our environment.

  • well everything is vibration so we are just a kind of harmonic standing wave

  • well, if we did it gradually enuff we could adapt 2 another enviroment, but a guess ur pretty uch right

  • there is no myth of "myself." "YOU" do not have control over your autonomic nervous system. "your body" does. everyone understands this distinction; we KNOW it exists. the mystery is trying to figure out WHAT "myself" is. denying its existence is preaching religious spirituality. this video is NOT science. it is bogus, bogus, bogus!

  • Man, you completely missed the whole point of this video.

  • the "evidence" this guy presents doesn't support his claims. how bogus.. you can't describe walking without describing your environment, because you wouldn't be walking without your env. wow, how genius! who knew that walking is an interaction with the ground? it doesn't support the claim that you can't describe yourself without your env.
