Hey whoever said this was "BLUEGRASS"....you need to do a little more research. This is NOT BLUEGRASS. This Old-Time music. Bluegrass was started by Bill Monroe in the 1940's. Some people think that music with a fiddle and banjo is "Bluegrass".....drives me nuts sometimes.....
This sounds horrible and I am the least racist person you would ever meet...but it just seems weird to see a black man singing bluegrass considering bluegrass is by origin an Irish type music and the irish are known for their hatred of black people...
@sanpalag10 Well considering I'm white (no Mexican or black roots at all) and I have dated 3 black girls and my fiance is mexican I think that goes to prove my non racism. Bluegrass has NO roots in Africa, all Africa gave to Bluegrass was the Banjo, but why would you believe a history scholar who studied primarily American, Irish and Scottish, and German history, which happens to be my family roots.
@organicmolecules NO it does not. If you guys don't believe me, google it or whatever. Bluegrass is an Irish and Scottish music. Why on earth would Irish and Scottish who have a LONGGGGG repuation of absolutely HATING black people derive their music from the people they can't stand?
Because once the African musical ideas crept into our folk music, there really was no taking them back out again. I'm not arguing that African Americans were heavily involved in the formation of bluegrass music.
@organicmolecules Show me some proof, anything realistically relavent. Because I searched through page after page on google to see if I was perhaps wrong somewhere and the only thing I could find that had anything to do with Africa being involved was the creation of the banjo.
Dude, look at the first paragraph of the History section on wikipedia; I mean it's not hard to notice polyrhythmic devices and bluegrass draws heavily on old-time which also has African roots (hint, you're commenting on a video of it).
@organicmolecules First off that says citation needed which means its not proven. Second, how can a music (bluegrass in this case) which in America alone has been around since the migration of Irish and Scottish peoples in the early 1800s or possbily even earlier be influenced by a music (jazz) which has only been around since 1894 from new orleans, not even Africa!!! The first jazz record ever recorded wasn't until 1917. So did bluegrass just guess what jazz would be like until then or what?
I never said it was influenced by jazz, I said it was influenced by African musical ideas. African slaves have been playing music around Irish indentured servants since at least Jamestown.
@organicmolecules Im sorry I misunderstood what you said about the Jazz thing. Only problem with what your saying now is that the simple fact of this whole entire debate is that the Irish and Scottish were already playing this music BEFORE they came to America. Listen to a true Irish song, then listen to a bluegrass song...the only thing missing from the Irish song is a banjo, not all songs but probably at least half of them are that way, the original ones anyway, not so much these days.
@organicmolecules (continued) Now given that later forms of bluegrass very well could have been influenced by jazz and probably several other forms of music too, but that couldn't have been until probably at least half way through the 20th century. Music hits a certain point where just to keep your music fresh and new you have to draw off other forms of music. But the plain and simple fact is Bluegrass has NO origins in Africa.
@mastercueartist actually dating/marrying a person of color doesn't preclude one from being a racist. Flat out denying any African influence in Bluegrass music w/o any evidence is kinda silly, but would be evidence for being racist.
@sanpalag10 Well I would say that I provided plenty of evidence if you would have taken the time to check into what I was saying. I am curious though, if you listen to songs from any part of Africa then listen to Bluegrass, I would love to know how you think they are alike in ANY way? If anything, the slaves got their form of music from their slave owners who did play old time and bluegrass type music. Like you said, they learned from their owners in the slave trade days, you said it yourself.
@mastercueartist ok first off you're a fucking idiot and im sick of having this discussion with you. So fuck off. you ignorant piece of shit. Second off this video is old time music. There's undoubtedly more evidence that suggests Black americans had at least some influence on the music that would later be called bluegrass than evidence contriarwise. Some evidence: Clarence Ashley and Tommy Jarrel both claim to have learned music from Black men.
@mastercueartist Also i never made claims that slaves learned music exclusively from their "owners". As i no longer continue to discourse with you i will not survey african music and compare it to bluegrass music, but undoubtely there are similarities, but even if they're aren't that would not prove that people of african dissent did or did not influence bluegrass.
I have loved every song I have heard them do...each in it's own way. This is fantastic also. When she goes into her singing I just get goosebumps. Thanks for posting. Great group & I wish them all the very best possible.

@mastercueartist um your words hardly sound like those of the least racist person one would meet, and bluegrass music has roots in Africa as well.

It does draw on African musical ideas, but in more of a roundabout way than say blues or jazz.
