  • i remember seeing that on the news when i was a kid at my grandmas house there was a storm going on there at the time and i was freaking out lol

  • I bet it threw sand everywhere!

  • 3:17, tree limb: "Hey whats up? Well, see ya later!"

  • Wow! I'm talking about this to my friends. I was there that day on vacation. There were three of them. Two on the boardwalk. I was at the beach and I saw people running and didn't no why until a cop on the motorcycle pulled me in to take cover inside one of the souvenir shop. I could see the tornado right at the corner just spinning in one spot. I have never been so scared and in shock my entire life!! I'm amazed that I could find this video. Gotta love youtube!!

  • @mjfanatic88

The water was so shallow were te tornado hit, that it wouldnt be considered a waterspout due to the fact the tornado probably sucked up the 2 feet of water where the funnel was at.

  • just made a B-line parallel to the beach, thankfully it didn't form over inland and hopefully it didn't go too far inland to cause any serious damage to any hotels/resorts/houses. this was probably somewhere between in EF-1/EF-2, not too bad, just scared everyone!

  • Incredible vantage point of the Myrtle Beach tornado. This tornado happened, which happened to be my birthdate ten years ago. Another thing which made this event memorable is that the tornado was moving SW along with the parent supercell that generated it. Just an incredible day. Strong tornadoes are rather unusual even during the severe weather season, let alone in July where upper level winds aren't usually strong enough to support tornadic activity

  • Ten years ago today! July 6, 2001 / July 6, 2011

  • Intense video!!

  • That is amazing footage!

  • I was there...I was staying at twin lakes camp ground...

  • lol thats a cute tornado

  • dude this bring back memories lol i was 9 dang i was scared like idk what then my step dad was out side and got hit with a chair lol

  • We just left our hotel when it hit and we were at Captain George's restaraunt and you could see it through the big glass window. It was crazy. Our hotel was damaged around the indoor pool and on the 6th floor. This is sooooo crazy to look at it again.

  • Dude i was only a few miles away from it. Just subscribed! Subscribe back and check out my songss :)

  • Wow. Was that north or south Myrtle beach?

  • I was staying at Compass Cover when this happened. We barely made it into the parking garage... as we were driving down 17 on the strip. I remember there being about a 5-6' ditch in the sand where the spout came inland. It was crazy! It happened so quick ppl were just running and grabbing kids out of the pool and putting them in the lower level rooms. It was 100+ degrees and sunny, right as it was hitting. Something I'll never forget!

  • holy shit im stayin in he hotel your in, 2 rooms up and rooms to the left, and there forcast is literally calling for tornados 0.0

  • @SamPoindexter22: A lot of people did just that and got stuck in stairwells, in our hotel the stairwells were surrounded by glass windows, not the best place to be during a tornado. The safest thing for most people was to just stay put. In our case, we stayed in the bathroom, and while our room was heavily damaged and it got a bit scary for a few seconds everyone was a-okay after it was all over. Hotel provided us with a another room free of charge for the rest of the week. :)

  • I was staying on the 10th floor of a hotel which for the life of me I can not remember the name of. We were on the balcony and saw something weird in the water, and next thing you know it comes up on the beach, sucks up a bunch of sand and we realize we have a tornado heading right for us. Watched it until it took the roof off the building next door, then ran into the bathroom with the family. It sucked the water out of the toilet, and the sliding glass doors leading to the balcony.

  • I was at the Beachwagon with my band doing a gig!

  • Beach shovel at 3:45 I think

  • i remember this.. it sucked my dog up when he ran off his leash befor we could get him off the beach. nahh im just kiddin but i was about a mile away when this happened... fun times at the ol beach

  • i remember this.. it sucked my dog up when it he ran off his leash befor we could get him off the beach.

  • that is impressive. why did yall stay up so high in the hotel. i wouldve got my ass down as low as i could

  • Awesome footage. My best friend and her family was down there at the time too. Her biggest fear has always been tornados so it was pretty intense. There was a guy right next to them in a different hotel that was yelling and flinging his shirt around, but when the tornado got close, he freaked out. Thanks for posting this!

  • the ocean is very still. the tornado is not even reacting to the water

  • Good work Sir, excellent footage

  • damn. i forgot all about this. i was in Holiday Towers across family kingdom. it hit my hotel we took shelter with like 30 other people holding on to each other. my pops had to hold the family as it hit. glass and sand was going everywhere. pretty painful. scary as hell too!

  • Nice footage ! Good job !

  • i went to paradise resort in myrtle its the best

  • i swear everytime i see footage like this I keep thinking of cloverfield. haha/

  • Man thats a gem!!!

  • I remember this. I was staying at Pirateland with my family && if I'm right it turned south right at OceanLakes which is next door. It was by far one of the coolest memories I have. I remember wishing I had my camera! My nana was in an ocean front hotel though && got a great view. (:

  • i was there. my hotel was right on the beach in line with these hotels.

  • Really amazing footage! I remember driving home from work that day, seeing the sky turn green, and pulling over to take cover! What a beautiful tornado! Thanks for posting.

  • is this near the paradise resort?

  • SURFS UP ! Great video , Thanks for sharing. Amazing how it just rode the edge of the shore like that. You got some pair bro... If it would've turned inland right near your hotel you wouldve been toast !

  • @mjfanatic88 No. It actually turned inland about a mile south. Is scoured up the pavement and did damage several homes.

  • WTF! where there people STILL at that beach while this was happening? if so, they are suicidal and retards

  • oh! i remember this! I WAS 4. lol but i remember this

  • awesome!

  • there are no tornado sirens in myrtle beach! i live here and i know that these are so rare here we have no sirens....but im starting to think especially with the two waterspouts off the coast a couple of days ago that it might not be so uncommon anymore so im thinking we really need some just incase.

  • I was at dinos pizza when that happened im in myrtle beach right now i cant belive its already been 10 dam yerars

  • I was in this tornado when I was three and I was pushed into one of those garage staircase thingys..i just remember my dad trying to hold the door shut, people screaming, and the whole building shaking

  • AMAZING footage. I actually left the day before it hit, so I just missed it. This is the best video of it Ive seen. as that other person said

"Do. Not. Delete. This. Video" !! :D saving it to my favourites. thanks

  • i was ther that white building was where i was at i was looking at it to awsome

  • i remember that. i just got off work when it happened. thank god it just stood there.

  • Dude you have balls of steel, I salute you.

  • Its impressive!!

  • Wow I remember that tornado. When it turned inland it hit the hotel that I was working at. Scariest moments of my life.

  • I was there, I saw it touch down over an amusement park, it started tearing the place up. Scariest thing II've ever seen.

  • My mom and dad were there when that tornado hit Myrtle beach, i was 4 when that happened...

  • Wow, that seems like it was really close to you. You're right, this is great footage. You've got a very steady hand. Weren't you freaking out considering in was so close?

  • i was a few blocks north of the tornado!

  • @nico189278 No. There were tornado sirens, but no evacuation.

  • @hz36t5 are the sirens still there today if so what are the locations???

  • @hz36t5 I didn't hear any sirens. Just people running

  • I was there but I didn't see it. That's because of the smaller one that hit the place I was staying, so the fact that it literally went over my head while I was stuck in an outside stairwell meant I was too busy trying to get my breathing under control to bother going to see this one.

  • which hotel was this shot from?

  • @Doubutsu1000 Sea Mist Resort

  • did it do any damage ?

  • @Droideka133 Yes. It tuned inland farther South and was powerful enough to scour up the pavement off of one of the roads and did structure damage.

  • omg i was there!

  • WOW, that was amazing...

  • I was 6 when this happen my family and i were on vacation brings back memories : ]

  • I remember this day crazy weather

  • Soo Cool I was There I snaped pics of it!!!! LOL

  • Awesome. I was there too. When I saw your video I was inspired to put up mine from that day. Check it out as seen from the Sea Gypsy 2

  • No. This was at Sea Mist. 1200 South Ocean Blvd.

  • I'm so glad you posted this, it brings back memories. I was there for a family reunion when I was 11. we had been at a waterpark so we were stuck in traffic when we saw it. we saw a thicker one later, do you know if there were two or if this one just got bigger?

  • @TheRealEricLester No. there was just one that got bigger.

  • Yeah thats what I figured

  • Wow! Thanks for posting this awesome video. I hope noone was injured but luckily it stayed on the water. Awesome job shooting this video!

  • It came on land a little. It was on the sand only though. After it died, 3 F0s formed. It died right after it passed Crown Reef, where I was staying. Then, the three small ones touched down. There also was an F1 on Highway 17, I saw the funnel of it still forming while that one was already on the ground. The one seen on the beach here was an F2.

  • I remember that. i could see the water spout all the way down in ocean lakes. we were flipping out.

  • dude i remember that day i was at the old mall and b4 i went in i said to my girl at the time that cloud looks like it will be a tornando.came out 20 min later aND THERE IT IS COMING DOWN BUISNESS 17 QAUTER MILE DOWN THE ROAD TOWARD US.never been so scared.

  • yeah man, that shit was hard core I was there. my hometown just got hit by some serious tornadoes a few days ago.

  • was this at Sea Mist?

  • Yes it was.

  • i was at the blue water resort that day i had pics but my mom tossed them out not o purpose but that was hairy as hell

  • i was there one building over it totaled one of our cars and shattered the windows in the others

  • Awesome footage man thanks for sharing!!!

    5 stars

  • sweet vid man 5 stars!!!

  • wtf, it barely moves

    truly an incredible footage

  • I have literally been in that pool. I stayed in the hilton resort kings something just to the left a ways.

  • Woohoo! I was working at the water park when I saw this. Have pictures from the day and wrote a story about it. Was 15. Big fan of twisters. Hope to go out to the midwest and see another one someday.

  • Fantastic video

  • i was there, we stayed at Burmuda Sands, it was freakin great, the tornado just made the week that much better!!!

  • i was there that day and my mom took all the cams to go to the store i would have had perfect pics of that tornado but that was a fun but hairy day wow just wow

  • It was an F2. It finally did turn inland South of the high rises. I understand that it scoured up the pavement from the highway. I think it did about 8 million in damage that day.

  • I'm orig. from Nebraska, and have been chasing tornadoes throughout the alley for 25 yrs...and have seen a lot live and on videos. That was one of the most spectacular tornado vids out there. Congrats for "hanging tough". I do remember hearing about that event. What was that thing rated? Can you imagine the devastation if that would have turned into your buildings along the beach? That was a powerful tornado. Thanks for posting! Joel in Tucson

  • Thanks for the reply. Man, I'm shocked that this event was rated an F-2. I believe that this was much stronger than that. To peel pavement up, unless it was crappy pavement, should rate higher. Plus, much of the debris was lifted straight up violently from where the circulation met the ground...as opposed to just swirling around that same area. I just filmed a F-2 this past June 17th 2009 in Aurora Neb. You tube key: type in above dates + Doren. Compare. I think yours is stronger. Thanks Joel

  • I was there xD

  • I was there! I was 7 at the time.I was at broadway at the beach when it happened. I was in the movie theater with my dad seeing Atlantis. When the movie was over he made me stay in theater, he went outside to see what was going on, he eye witnessed it. Ever since then I've been interested in meteorology and I plan on majoring in that field in college. The water at the beach the next day was so calm and it knocked over the roller coaster at the Pavilion

  • I was there good thing bout time it got by our hotel it was in the water not on land it was scary but exciting at the same time

  • i was there!!!!!

  • i was there i think

  • Wow, awesome video! I was not there at the time, but i worked in the weather field at the time. This tornado moved straight down the beach, it crossed 2nd ave. pier and did some damage to it. It flipped a bus over (no one in it) and damaged several hotels, mostly blown out windows. It kept moving south and stopeped just north of Springmaid beach at the south end of Ocean Blvd. There were actually a couple of other smaller tornadoes in the area from that same storm.

  • Look at the ocean around it. Heh nice shot.

  • was there sirens?

  • No, there were no sirens. This is a very rare occurrence for Myrtle Beach. There are no sirens for tornadoes like in areas where they happpen all the time, like Oklahoma or Kansas.

  • Oh geez so it was a surprise for people who didn't know right away I bet. This happened when I was like in 3rd grade because I remember a guy at the YMCA was telling us about how they had to be evacuated during a volleyball tournament when this happened and I knew a kid who was there when it happened.

  • I was there and only about 2 blocks from it. Scary as hell. From the angle we saw it was when it came next to the road and it was a perfect funnel. We had just came back to the room because a storm had just came up with a ton of ran and all of a sudden we heard people screaming and running.

  • I wish I was there. But in 2001, my family only went to Nags Head,NC. But weve been staying at Myrtle Beach since 2003.BTW, I was 3 or 4 years old in 2001. So I wouldnt have worried about THAT tornado.

  • oh my goodness, i can't believe you are so calm! i think i would have freaked out! an amazing video. i go on vacation to myrtle beach every year and luckily i have never had to deal with something like that!

  • great video thanks for the upload

  • Wow you almost got hit by flying debris a few times....at 3:46 i saw a plastic shovel fly by lol

  • Was the tornado moving the opposite direction then usual? Normally they move from southwest to northeast but this one looks like it was moving northeast to southwest.

  • It was in fact moving South West

  • I was there for that...We got put into the stairwell lol.

  • incredible

  • awesome video

  • the reason it seems to be almost stationary is becase in the south we get the typical atmosphere type thunderstorms and there are no upper level winds to move the storms along..most on average move between 2-20 mph in the summertime with no general direction. A tornado from one is very unusual but im sure there was some turning with the wind with height as well as the cool ocean breeze that mixed in the storm to cause the tornado.

  • we get those all summer long in georgia too. they pop up out of nowhere as the daytime temperature rises. you can watch the supercells form in front of you. as soon as the sun goes down - so do the supercells.

  • I was at the Pavilion about 20 mins before it got hit by one of the tornadoes and was heading north to Broadway. On the way we witnessed trash cans and other debris being swirled around and upward. When we got to Broadway at the Beach we looked south east and saw the tornado that was ripping into the Pavilion and even though we were a few miles away it was scary as heck.

  • Hey I'm so excited you posted this! I was at the Pavilion when one of the tornadoes that day came ripping through. Where exactly were you filming from?

  • Sea Mist Resort

  • in the beginning you can hear people going omg!!!!! omg!!! look!! OMG!!!

  • Awesome...thanks!

  • Is this that famous twister? The one you see in the pictures at springmaid pier?

  • Not sure about that. Most likely since that was the only one the hit the beach with such devastation.

  • Amazing footage. Thanks for sharing.

  • Stunning footage, especially after you move to the window facing the south and the tornado appears again from the other side of the hotel. Thank you for dragging this out and posting it!

  • Hey, how exactly did the tornado approach land? Was it far out in the ocean (few hundred yards) or did it just drop out of the sky nearby? I wonder if people were in the ocean when it did touch down in the water?

  • I started filming as it formed. The start of the video was the start of the of the tornado. It followed the beach (maybe 100 feet off shore) South, down past all the high rise hotels and then turned inland. It was as if the high rise hotels kept it from turning inland. I am sure there were people on the Beach. there were at our hotel.

  • i was 9 at the time and we were on vacation there and we had just got there and went in the ocean and yes i was in the ocean when this happend but got out very quick the water after it started was super strong

  • tornadoes tickles my jolly =]

  • This is simply amazing footage. Why the heck haven't you sold this to the Discovery Channel or something?

Knowing Myrtle Beach pretty well, this is an unusual tornado, because it's tracking from northeast to southwest. Was there a tropical storm there to explain this anomaly?

  • Just never got around to doing anything with it.

No. It was just a typical summertime storm that spawned it. It finally turned inland down near the airport.

  • Myrtle Beach is a geographically small area isn't it? A tornado hitting any small area is unlikely. Just pure probability. Tornadoes are fairly common in Florida.

  • How can it be unlikely and probable at the same time? Sounds contradictory to me.

  • Florida is a fairly large area with a relatively high frequency of tornadoes. Myrtle beach is small by comparison. If you throw a dart at a map of Florida, what are your chances of hitting Myrtle beach?

  • Well, those chances are zero, seeing how Myrtle Beach is in SC and not Florida.

And yes, the size of a STATE is quite larger than the size of a CITY. Maybe you're just young, but you seem to have a case of pretzel logic.

  • For some reason I had thought Myrtle beach was in Florida. I have no idea why. But tornadoes have occurred in all 50 states. But the case is pretty much the same. Throw a dart at a map of South Carolina, what are your chances of hitting Myrtle Beach? Even if you live in tornado alley the chances of a tornado hitting your town specifically are probably low.

  • Now I think you're just f'n with me. We've come to the conclusion that a tornado hitting any specific area is now unlikely. Look, the only reason I was arguing was b/c in your first post you said a tornado hitting Myrtle Beach was unlikely. Then you said it was just pure probability. Unlikely and Probability are the exact opposite of each other. Ugh.....I give up, you win.

  • Unlikely is something you can say when dealing with probability. When I said probability I was referring to the field of mathematics. Probability is not a matter of dealing with what is a likely to occur, it is a matter of dealing with HOW likely an event is whether or not it is likely.

  • Ok Ok. You meant the probability of a tornado hitting Myrtle Beach is unlikely.

Now I understand. Your first post doesn't read that way at all. Whatever, now it just looks like I'm coming off as a gigantic

d-bag. I know what you mean now, and I agree.
