they make Barnes look bad, but Barnes found out that there are no rules of war. war is hell, if you play by the rules you won't win. that's why we haven't won a war since korea. barnes was right.
No he was not scared of a liberal weeny like Alias, he could have killed Alias by looking at him. He was just stronger and tougher than the other guys in the Platoon, why do you think none of them jumped him when he asked them to? If they had entire Platoons full of guys like Barnes we would have won Vietnam!!! Morons....
@Vissago22 Yeah, well if my grandmother had wheels she would be a bicycle. You were lucky if you had one soldier like Barnes in the American Army. The US wins wars because of technology, the american soldier is weak by itself, it can not be compared to asian soldiers who are much more diciplined, dedicated and just plain bad asses. That is why the US got killed in Vietnam.
@lapingapatoelmundo You are incorrect on so many levels, friend. The American soldiers didn't lose the Vietnam war; the government did. No major battles was lost by the US. If technology is the true reason why the Americans win wars, they wouldn't been able to hold-out against the British.
@LanceBeckman Elias had more guts than most people ever will, what are you talking about,Barnes along with bunny was just plain crazy, they were examples of men who had been there too long, had they made it out they would have never fit back into the real world.
barnes is the way a soldier should be.. i have been in the Army for 7 years now, and he is a true leader. things dont always go the way you wish, but as a soldier, you are supposed to suck it up and deal with it.. not turn to drugs or whine & bitch. he expects his men to do their jobs, & he is trying to enforce discipline in his unit (1:37 - 2:00). he holds his men to a higher standard than a bunch of pot-smoking whiners. I wish today's army had more NCOs & soldiers like SSG Barnes...
@AltamontKiller not really. I always thought that this was his achilles heel. He stared too long into the abyss. To win a war you can't become the war, as you lose what it was you were fighting for. This to me encapsulated the tortured soul of Barnes, knowing that no matter how well he fought, no matter how many battles he won, he'd already lost his war.
i really loved the way both defoe and berenger play their parts. Defoe did a great job of being that guy u would like and feel so sorry when he died his incredibly epic death. and Bernenger played the part perfectly where u would hate his character ( thats how i felt at least)
charlie was WINNING when he smashed barnes face into the pole but barnes got the upper hand and then charlie wasnt WINNING ten out of ten for barnes knife handlin skills
Man, I loved Elias, hated him dying and hated barnes, but This scene is what also makes barnes of of my favorite. ANd that's what's cool is that it's a story within a story when it comes to elias and barnes, good and evil kinda. Love em' both! Love this movie!!!!!!!!
@shiroisan87 Something about Vietnam dude. I don't know what it is, but something about that war was dark as fuck (more so than previous wars, even WW2). The way the soldiers dressed, the jungle, the Vietcong, sinister soldiers like Barnes and Bunny, the fact that we lost.
I totally agree. it really has a deep human drama factor to it. which makes movies about to super interesting and such. idk. you did a better job describing it.
@ShockTherapist007 But we cant just ignore the full statement. "You smoke this shit so as to escape from reality? Me, I dont need this SHIT, I am reality."
If you look at Berenger's expression, there's a part of him that actually wants to die. He's not joking or mocking them, not entirely. They are righteous in a sense, he feared Elias, and he wants them to finally put an end to his sick, twisted soul. And when he finds out they're too cowardly to do it, that's all he needs to justify being a brutal pig.
@hopkins4545 It's beautiful how he sums up all his disgust and despair in the line "I shit on all of you!" They had their chance to make things what it 'ought to be' but their inaction kept it the way it is. Berenger is truly one of the best.
@hopkins4545 Excellent point. However The Barnes element on the developments of thier characters in the Vietnam experience, was just as vital and necessary as the element of Alias. This dualism, if Im using the proper term was something Chris finally came to grips with after the war or somewhere along the way. It is expressed in the last scene as he is leaving the scene in the chopper. Good and Evil a part of the same makeup that is the definition of the human animal. BOTH NECESSARY FOR SURVIVAL
@hopkins4545 I agree, I've always thought that a death wish was crucial to the character of Sgt. Barnes. Such a great movie, definitely the best Vietnam movie ever made and my personal favorite war movie.
@loutcb oliver stone said he failed at this scene in his mind. At then end when they fight, he said he would of did it differently looking back on it. I love this hole movie so i dont really care.
"smoking this shit to escape from reality? yeah i don't need this shit" he says with a bottle of jack daniels in hand.
