The US wins wars because of technology, the american soldier is weak by itself, it can not be compared to asian soldiers who are much more diciplined, dedicated and just plain bad asses. barnes is the way a soldier should be.. i have been in the Army for 7 years now, and he is a true leader. things dont always go the way you wish, but as a soldier, you are supposed to suck it up and deal with it.. not turn to drugs or whine & bitch. he expects his men to do their jobs, & he is trying to enforce discipline in his unit (1:37 - 2:00). he holds his men to a higher standard than a bunch of pot-smoking whiners. I wish today's army had more NCOs & soldiers like SSG Barnes...

@AltamontKiller not really. I always thought that this was his achilles heel. He stared too long into the abyss. To win a war you can't become the war, as you lose what it was you were fighting for. This to me encapsulated the tortured soul of Barnes, knowing that no matter how well he fought, no matter how many battles he won, he'd already lost his war.

@shiroisan87 Something about Vietnam dude. I don't know what it is, but something about that war was dark as fuck (more so than previous wars, even WW2). The way the soldiers dressed, the jungle, the Vietcong, sinister soldiers like Barnes and Bunny, the fact that we lost.

If you look at Berenger's expression, there's a part of him that actually wants to die. He's not joking or mocking them, not entirely. They are righteous in a sense, he feared Elias, and he wants them to finally put an end to his sick, twisted soul. And when he finds out they're too cowardly to do it, that's all he needs to justify being a brutal pig.

@hopkins4545 Excellent point. However The Barnes element on the developments of thier characters in the Vietnam experience, was just as vital and necessary as the element of Alias. This dualism, if Im using the proper term was something Chris finally came to grips with after the war or somewhere along the way. It is expressed in the last scene as he is leaving the scene in the chopper. Good and Evil a part of the same makeup that is the definition of the human animal. BOTH NECESSARY FOR SURVIVAL
