a well tuned cvt is one of the best drive systems out there. They do rob a good deal of power, but if you can dial her in to pull and pull at your peak band, you will be good to go
CVT Transmissions are definetly the way to go for the competition. Try a TEAM Roller Driven clutch to increase you efficiency and back shift for the enduro race. Try to get your engagement up in the 5000 rpm range also. I was on the UND team in 2003 & 2004
Last years team bought a Team clutch. They were having trouble with it shifting (not sure why) so they put this stock one back on for testing. This years team is working on tuning the Team clutch.
Name any team that has finished 1st in the past 10 years of Formula SAE while using a CVT. I'm not saying that it is not the best transmission, but have there been a lot of truly successful applications in FSAE?
Formula SAE 2008 at MIS was probably the most competitive competition to date, with some of the best international teams showing up. None in the top 10 used CVTs.
If I were judging a team with a cvt in design, I would need a good deal of justification from them.
I completely agree, as an ME at Bradley I'm hoping to get on the FSAE team in a couple years, and the biggest thing I'm going to lobby is that the CVT not be used. Unfortunately I've been told that using the CVT is part of the requirement of the project :(
