I find his playing of this piece very beautiful and touching. Do all pianists must sound the same? same tempo, same dynamics, same colors ? Thank God not! it would make my listening quite boring and predictable. Music is written, but it only becomes alive when played with soul.
But how can you count the seconds!??! I listen to this piece and I feel the emotions.. the Heart of Chopin! It is not written anywhere that a piece has the seconds counted to be lived!
She's not as famous but, has anyone heard Lilian Kallir play this piece? It's one of the most balanced in terms of speed, dynamics and expression that I've encountered.

PS You did not write it, but you sure can play it.
this is one of the impossible things that i can't .. and will never do in the future........since i barely practice :(.........................this sounds so smooth and emotional
I actually think the speed of this piece was perfect. Most performances I listen to are slower and before I started analyzing the piece, I favored a slower performance. Now that I've done my analysis research paper on this piece, this recording is actually my favorite, because of the way Pollini speeds up tempos at sections that are leading up to something. LIke his chromatic figures. A great example of how Well Pollini does this is from 2:25 up 2:37 where he slows down to the resolution.
@phewwhataloonie Indeed. I think its alot bout the teaching. Chinese and other asian countries are so strict when they learn. Sometimes its better to play free and let feeling decide how to move your fingers than a teacher that read and obey the note-paper. Notes are a way to find they music that a composer made, not to dictate and follow strictly.
far too fast... couldn't even listen to the end. Took all the tranquillity out of it... which he momentarily realises at 1.40 ish before rushing off again!
I am normally a tremendous fan of Pollini, but this performance leaves me wanting for more. The lush harmonies, the complexities of the right hand as compared with the relative simplicity of the left hand, the climaxes, the accents, the vast dynamic changes and subtleties-by racing through this nocturne as he did, he obscured the inner beauty of this piece. So many of the intricacies of touch, tone, and indeed ornamentation are obliterated as a direct result of the very fast speed. It isn't a m
I mean thats cool and all you guys can pick up his little flaws as in playing to fast, but personally I'd give my left testicle to play like this guy.
I just posted my interpretation of Nocturne opus 9 ,No.2. I would appreciate your comments. Please click on my link 'alfonsopablo' next to this comment to listen.
To all the people defending the performance of Pollini. There's another youtube-clip of Pollini where he plays this piece: 'watch?v=tFVQx9yxMcE'
Now WITHOUT listening you can easily identify that the other one lasted roughly 4:45 while in this video here pollini played from 0:10 to 4:25, making a playtime of 4:15...that's a total difference of 30 seconds. In words: thirty. Half a minute.
Pollini played (too) fast even compared to himself!
@sleepingdogable I know this performance and for sure it is the fastest perfoemance of Pollini for this nocturne. I don't see the problem ! 30 seconds less or more aren't the problem, the only question to answer is whether it is a good interpretation or not. I think yes, and I prefer this one to the standard and "static" versions of this nocturne. This one is very ... romantic and full of emotion and passion. Great Maurizio, great Chopin
@sleepingdogable true enough...in shorter works 30 seconds is a lot..compare with rubinstein's which, though not necessarily among the "slow" versions - STILL gives far greater breathing and space than pollini..
it gives the impression of being played as a "showpiece" rather than the obvious suggestion in the title. a Nocturne...or at least something that , like any organism being alive -, also actually has to "take a breathe" -- which pollini seems determined NOT to allow. it's one of the strangest , yet unoriginal, interpretations of ANY romantic piece i have ever heard, frankly.
@sleepingdogable um, or he chose a slightly different speed. the original sheet music doesn't have a specific metronome number, there's no "too fast" within a certain range, which he was clearly in
@DEADxWOLVES Speed helps determine the emotion of the piece, it is important. Play altogether too fast and you get a hasty piece that sounds bad. Bolet has the best interpretations of Chopin in my opinion.
I am a young teenager that is trying to become a professional piano player, may you please visit my page, I promise you won't be disappointed. Please like this so more people can listen to my music. Thank you.
If you are going to be critical state what is bad about it not just saying two abstractions. It's totally fine to state your opinion if it is backed up. I actually agree though, not that I could compete, I feel that the piece would have been better if it had been more legato.
I found a piano instructor that turned out to be a world-class pianist and has a video of an encore performance of this piece. I feel his interpretation is even more masterful: youtube.com/watch?v=oigcGec9K_Y
Some people just need to understand that amongst nearly 4000 people there's most likely at the very least 185 tone deaf douchebags and a couple of bastards and even misclicks..
@astronome9 Just type in Youtube Search box the following: avexnetwork Nobuyuki Tsujii. The first video that comes up, with a title in Japanese but you see in it the number 8, that's the one. Enjoy!
Funny. This is such a wonderful piece yet.....you people find something negative to say. How can you even think of negative things while you listen to this....
Excellent performance, yet another reminder that even though Chopin passed away at just 39, he left the world with possibly the most beautiful music ever written for piano.
@caspiman - I suppose that is why in 2007, Pollini received the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (without orchestra) for his Deutsche Grammophon recording of Chopin nocturnes.
I am surprised by the comment. OK, in terms of color and voicing, there is little here that is different than recent Pollini Cds. But few pianists would dare do it this fast. The daring and originality here is in the timing, the nervous intensity of the rubatos, and the fercocious, sudden surges of speed (beginning at about 2:25 , for example, and again at 3:22) that elude more mundane artists. Hardly a robot could do this. It's unique to Pollini.

@StockholmSyndrome08 A music teach once said this to me. You never say the same thing twice. Now say it twice and you will understand what he meant by it.
This without a doubt my favourite Chopin piece. It is absolutely lovely
@StockholmSyndrome08 What's so wrong with discussing technique? As long the discussion is done in a civil manner. Are you saying if one comment on the techniques, then he can't enjoy the piece? Or are you saying that people who watch this video MUST embrace this interpretation(not arrangement) no matter what? If music criticism and technique is bad, then how come all the master musician worry about technique and criticize their students all the time?
@StockholmSyndrome08 What? You are another of these people who want to censure comments? What is it to do with you what people write? The pianist has every right to comment on technical aspects. You do not have to read them.
@StockholmSyndrome08 I share you thoughts on just enjoying music but sadly, because this is the internet, the Armchair Army believes they can spout off.
His playing has got perfect skill and wonderful fingering control. Undoubtedly, yet, it's sure that Chopin wants a slower and more emotional version, since he is watching the night. Anyway, great job.
@VitalijMargulis Actually no, he's still under the tempo marked by Chopin (dotted quarter=50). This piece isn't supposed to be a lull in D Major, it's supposed to move along and be a short but great explosion of emotion.
@willk326 Actually yes. Too fast, in places certainly. Composers are not invariably the best judges of tempi and this is one of the more glaring example where that holds. It is impossible to communicate this music at 50, as most performers will agree, I suspect and hope. I agree with you about explosion which I have yet to her from any performer, although Valentina builds the major episode well.
That's true. Yundi Li, for example, plays it slower and it sounds really better for me. Generally I prefer Maurizio Pollini and I love the way he plays piano, but he took something out of this melody putting here that tempo.
Anyway it's amazing to hear his emotions with every tempo and he's ending gently, soflty and that's what every man should be able to do even after acting with similar speed before :-)
@arlongan Oh no, I came to this area again. Do you learn about sarcasm in ESL classes? Is that something they teach, or do they send you onto youtube to learn it the hard way?
Why does it matter how he plays this piece? There are so many things in life that are ugly and this is just one more thing that brings upon our better side regardless of temop or interpretation. If Einstein were around with the technology we have today; I'm sure he'd get countless emails saying how dumb E=MC squared is. Lol. Maybe the 167 accidentally clicked the wrong button and didn't notice. LoL.

@StockholmSyndrome08 How can this silly comment have the approval of 43 people?

@StockholmSyndrome08 I share you thoughts on just enjoying music but sadly, because this is the internet, the Armchair Army believes they can spout off.

Fantástico!!
Chopin era inexplicável.

His playing has got perfect skill and wonderful fingering control. Undoubtedly, yet, it's sure that Chopin wants a slower and more emotional version, since he is watching the night. Anyway, great job.

Way too fast!
VitalijMargulis 10 months ago
@VitalijMargulis Actually no, he's still under the tempo marked by Chopin (dotted quarter=50). This piece isn't supposed to be a lull in D Major, it's supposed to move along and be a short but great explosion of emotion.
willk326 10 months ago
@willk326 Actually yes. Too fast, in places certainly. Composers are not invariably the best judges of tempi and this is one of the more glaring example where that holds. It is impossible to communicate this music at 50, as most performers will agree, I suspect and hope. I agree with you about explosion which I have yet to her from any performer, although Valentina builds the major episode well.

As a fan of Gaga, I resent that. There's no reason people who listen to one genre can't listen to a different genre.

This is the only version I've heard at this faster tempo. I do like the relaxing feel of the slower tempo, but this is undeniably great as well.

@ProkofievRules Then just go to Gaga's videos and NEVER come to this area.

LoL.
