David Lynch has a an old 1930s style of filmakingway. he has a dark nightmarish way of making his films. The guys got issues. This movie could almost be like 1930s movie. simmillar to james whales who directed Frankenstein.

I don't know if "heart-warming" is the right set of words - but at 4:57 it's so great the way the other side-show actors (with the kind and brave dwarf as their leader) breaks him out of the cage... so cool the way the "giant" picks him up and helps him out... and the dwarf bids him farewell and good luck. Reminds one just a little of the old fairy tale "Bremen Town Musicians" where unwanted animals band together through their camaraderie and music and live happily ever after. So moving.

Mr. Merrick was right people are afraid of things they don't understand. It's hard to believe that people would treat humans like this. A different time though, it was a different time and there were others who shared his pain like Johnny Eck, Peter Robinson, Daisy and Violet Hilton, and many many more. God bless them all they were the most beautiful humans that God ever brought into this world.

@homgJulie u know, i see alot of people treat each other the same way they treat merrick. i really have. every single day. i may not have been treated as bad as he has, but i went through alot growing up and still do to this day. i remember it was so bad i just wanted to kill myself and almost did. it's terrible for merrick and for people like him. but people treat each other this way all the time none the less. this world is so very sick and sometimes i hate living life knowing it's around.

@homgJulie Oh i agree...but you have to get the social climate back then...Everyone was uneducated(majority)and ignorant, religion had a strong hold on people's lives and most babies born with his condition die at birth or were killed(for religious/superstitious reasons usually). It wouldn't happen as severely today, but I would hope I wouldn't treat someone that way at any period in history(I'd hope that is).
