IMO, a lower gear ratio like 2.93 or 3.25 better suits the torque of the m30. The e30 is such a light car and the m30 is relatively powerful to the m20 and especially the m10/m42, it doesn't need the torque multiplied as much as it would in a heavy car like the 5 or 7 series. Shorter gears increase acceleration, but it gets to a certain point where too much shifting can slow you down instead of making the best power out of each gear.
@joemadoo disagree - low end torque of the big 6 is best taken advantage of with a low ratio diff - ive got a 3.25 to 10 on my M30B35 turbo - the low end torque created by the engine works well (pre-turbo spool) - and the turbo boosts the high rpm. even if u dont have a turbo, 4:10 with the B35 is great

Just a fellow e30er's 2 cents

@BeeEmmW thats what I was saying man. The m30 has so much torque you don't need a high ratio diff, especially with a turbo

the speedo literally jumps from 40 to 80km/h in half a second.
WTF.

Do you know how speedos work? He shifted to second and instantly broke the tires loose. They were spinning at 80kmh while the car was catching up.
