guthrie's crooked teeth are a product of evolution.. so that in case this genius would loose his hands he could play with his mouth and indeed, continue being one of the best..
@ProgressiveMadness92 relax pal, guthrie himself said you don't have to idolize any guitarist, just absorb as much as you can of what will work for you within their styles...being said so...i still have my hendrix and zappa book under close scrutiny...what i like best in Govan is that he's not arrogant at all...while Frank and Jimi...well...anyways they are all great guitar players...in spite of having heard all that there is to hear about hendrix and zappa i still like best govan!
@ProgressiveMadness92 What is it about that buckethead guy? I've seen him play multiple times but he always completely failed to impress me. Can you name one video on which his incrediple playing comes out?
@BrokenWingman That's a beautiful song indeed, thanks! I quite like his style, although I do think in his quicker playing he tends to sound Paul Gilbert-like. For the ballads I always turn to my other hero; Andy Timmons.
@ProgressiveMadness92 What is it about that buckethead guy? I've seen him play multiple times but he always completely failed to impress me. Can you name one video on which his incrediple playing comes out?
I think I respect the session guitarist more, if he's score or lead reading that on off... you could probably expect some slash/inverted chords which would be easy to nail on stage whilst playing infront a crowd stood next to the guthrie govan
I was really impressed until the wah solo at the end... no words exist that express just how impressed i was after the wah solo. his phrasing is incredible.
I have watched this many times, and I am a decent guitarist - but is there anyone else who can do an improv like GG and I mean for every and any song you can imagine! But so you know from 5:17 he is just modestly letting anyone with ears know he has mastered the guitar! For a while after I discovered Guthrie I wanted to break my guitar and never look at it again, but when you become wise you will want to practice more than ever before ;)
I lately found out, that it helps not always compare your playing to the playing of others. Just be yourself, go for your own goals... Not try to copy anything. I guess that's how many UNIQUE players made their way. Be inspired, but not try to be something, you aren't. Create own personality on your instrument, everyday. Try to get what you practice to songs, to finished music. Everyone can write music... But most prefer to copy. Don't know, ... My point of view.
@MaxBGuitar Well, I mean many many players (incl Guthrie) take a lot of licks from different players they like, analyse them and then use them in their own way. This will help your improvising tremendously since the players you like are probably the ones that play whatever you want to sound like. But indeed, no one ever liked a copycat, be yourself with those licks!
@SublimeParagon know what you mean, i stopped playing since i could not get through Vai's Zappa transcriptions....but i just discovered this guy...he inspired me to wise up a little bit and listen, then playing, this guy is so much more clean than any other virtuoso i've head. in control.
@SublimeParagon have you read any of his interviews? he's on another plane altogether. smart, witty, hilarious, non chalonte and direct at the same time. Fully aware of his abilities yet not the least bit arrogant. Brilliant. Sublime....possibly the greatest ever.
@SublimeParagon I'm not sure there is. I'd say Greg Howe comes close in terms of style and out of scale improvisation. But Guthrie has that silky smoothness that is difficult to replicate. Both guys are legends and I wish more people knew who they were.
yeah sure this is awesome and he's precise with perfect timing and unmatched speed and coordination! But who needs all that? I say take off all the strings accept one 'cause isn't that more realistic? :-)
Guthrie's practice model might be one of the worst out there. From what I can gather from interviews and the like, he basically just noodled all day long to himself, not really focusing on any technique in particular, just the stuff that "sounds good" all the while drinking and smoking like a chimney. And somehow he's come out the other end as one of the most versatile and technically proficient guitarists ever. I'm either wrong and this is EXACTLY the model everyone should follow, or he's just
@Kingding6 Not all methods of practicing work for everyone. I can learn songs very easily, and I can (generally) shred on the guitar, but if you ask me about scales or chords you'll get a deer in headlights star. Because I don't know what the fuck those are. See B.B. King.
tsk tsk child! It's very clear to me that you suffer from superimposed delusions stemming from having others who do not want to hurt your feelings actually saying that you're good!
@DrJackKavorkian How are you going to say something like that when you've never even heard someone play? When I said that I was pretty good at playing guitar (paraphrasing) I was talking about songs I had already learned. I'm very good at learning songs from tablature and sheet music, and while I said I knew no chords I was in fact lieing, everyone who plays guitar knows chords, at least all the basic ones memorized, besides a select few players. I never claimed to be excellent, just ok.
@MajorJakobs Beethoven still composed/conducted when he was deaf. That doesn't make it a good thing. It's a handicap. You're willfully ignorant. Learn scales/chords and you'll have so many more tools in your belt.
Learning a song is easy; writing well is hard. Shredding is simple; doing so through time changes and mode changes is hard.
@mdtTheory I never said not to learn scales and chords, I am actually in the process of learning these, and I've seen a rapid increase in my guitar playing capabilities.
Guthrie Govan is simply amazing. Best guitarists in my opinion. please check out my cover of this intro. its not perfect, but please tell me what you think :)
@LeadBlimp If Guthrie would think like that, he'd make a lot of mistakes in every show. He, as any performing artist, needs to forget about making mistakes and just play the music and when mistakes occur, and they occur from time to time to everyone of us, you need to just go on and put in behind yourself.
@GuitarRoast *sigh* mimicking govan like a little parrot doesn't make him better than guthrie. Besides being a parrot, the guy doesn't play the song better than govan at all.
That doesn't mean I'm criticizing the guy's skill however. He copied the songs well and he seems like a technically proficient player. Better than Guthrie? no way man.
@GuitarRoast Well the fact that in some magazine they rate him higher doesn't mean anything except that the magazine is wrong :p I've heard that guy play wonderfull slippery thing, he does okay, but nowhere near guthrie and you know it ;)
@GuitarRoast He worships Guthrie Govan, That's why he covers him. He's a nice dude and he plays awesome, but Guthrie wrote the stuff he covers ;)... He never said Guthrie's a clown
yes but if you ever challenge tim halcomb to a guitar contest, the only "waves" you'll see is those of your "lost" fans while you're running out the rear exit! LOL
Technique is just insanity. And the crazy part is he looks like he barely moves! His "economy of motion" so to say is just mind-blowing. This guy can play in the style of anyone and on his own he is everything good about guitar and music rolled into to one hairy Christ looking shred beast.
5:16 imo still the best live improvised guitar solo i have ever listened to. it is complex, it is fast, it is just genius!!! his brainpower is just overwhelming. Tomorrow i will see him live in Hasbergen, Gerrnany, YEHAAAA!!!! :D
This is cool to watch on youtube and all, but I'd get bored listening to this in the car or running. Technique just isn't entertaining to me, personally.
@TheRooster456 This isn't meant as an insult, but I seriously doubt that 5 years as a session worker will allow someone to "fully" comprehend a piece of music just like that, much less studio work. Formal lessons and theory for five years maybe (or less, I'd say 2 preferably 1 for learning and 1 for application), but session work just won't cut it. It just gets you street knowledge and know-how which can only take you so far.
@TheRooster456 But I do get that technique boredom feeling. It's the bane of any guitarist/ really, to always try and conjure something new and fresh. Lord damn me, I eventually got bored of petrucci/gilbert : \ and don't get me started on Joe sat. Not that they suck, it's just that people can get used to anything. Give it like a decade's time and some underground guitarists will blow today's legends out of the water (or at least par them)
I"ll put money on the fact that every person who dislikes this video is probably a condsending blues "purist" who insists that playing slow is the only way to show any feeling or emotion...go and truly learn your instrument before you put down someone as amazing as Guthrie is
totally agree, to say he lacks accuracy is an opinion by a noob never played guitar. he used really fast licks and was very clean and not just the playing also his effects are very clean and thats why he was sounding not that well. he needs more distortion but at the solo you could see that he isnt perfect as well^^
I bought guthries album twice on accident. Normally something like that would piss me off. But i was glad i did anyway knowing that it was going to him. It's rare a guy is so good that you want to buy their album twice just for the hell of giving them more money.
Let's be realistic. G3 will never be without Satriani and Vai, because it's Satriani's show, and Vai's a direct student of him. Guthrie could still perform as the honorary third guest, and Satch himself said he would want a show like that, but he wanted to wait until Guthrie had more material out on albums. Unfortunately, we're still waiting on another album because Guthrie's focusing more on actually creating a presence in the mainstream, in order to get SOMEBODY to buy his album this time.
@TheSpoonman00 big shows with big budgets arent a jazz fusion thing either. It just isn't their style. A highly structured set with a big venue just isn't conducive the improvisational style that fusion guitar players are fond of. However this still isn't a good enough argument to justify the fact that their has been very little collaboration between fusion guitar players. There should be more of it. Richie Kotzen and Greg Howe's project was fantastic and it worked really well. no tour though
@SirJamestheIII This video here is a great example of that rare fusion guitarist collaboration. Some of the best stuff I've seen with Guthrie has been his work with Dave Kilminster. If he ever decides to make a studio version of his sole contribution to ASIA, "Bad Asteroid", it needs to be with Kilminster.
Its a huge misconception that Vai is a direct student of Satch. He had a few informal lessons when he was 14 years old - Thats it !!
Its a cop out to say Satch is waiting for Guthrie to get more material. Erotic Cakes is a masterpiece and Guthrie can play pretty much anything he wants anyway. I'm sure he can come up with a 45 minute set and then hand the other two their asses in the shred fest finale .
@tudortoomey Actually, Allan... Guthrie and Shawn are probably the most unbelievable players ever on the electric guitar, and the control of the instrument they have is probably unmatched. But Allan is a musical genre by himself... An inspiration to all.
@turnbacktime my answer is that they are more skilled both technically and musically. I´ve been listening like a madman to all these "shredders" for a long time but when i started dicovering these fusion guys (Guthrie and Shawn) my mind was still blown by the level of muscicanship which really touches something inside me.
They dont destroy Vai and Gilbert by any means. Guthrie has made 1 solo album that admittedly is superb, but hasnt sold in bucketloads. Vai has been top of the tree for 30 years and musically and influentially is light years ahead of Guthrie. Technically, Guthrie is probably more proficient, although thats difficult to quantify at this level. He needs to make albums and tour and make a name for himself before he can count himself on the level of Vai
@hulldanfan Vai certainly eclipses Guthrie in the influential scale, but i don't think Vai has the edge musically. I think thats one of Guthrie's best traits. And one where most guitarists can not match him on.
This is obviously a subjective issue. Guthrie has 1 album to his credit and 50% of his material on YT are different versions of 'Waves or Fives'. Much as I love these songs, I just cant compare the musicality with Vai's huge and diverse output and performances.
PS - Check out Guthre's version of Fives on Lee Ritenours '6 string theory' album - It has Tal Wilkenfield and Vinnie Colaiuta and blows the Erotic Cakes original out of the water
@hulldanfan yea I saw that version, its pretty insane. Have you heard or watched Guthrie's stuff with the Fellowship? Its a bit more mellow and jazzy then the erotic cakes material.
last time i watched this i got a hard on that lasted 3 and a half days, i knew i shouldnt have watched again

This is cool to watch on youtube and all, but I'd get bored listening to this in the car or running. Technique just isn't entertaining to me, personally.

@TheRooster456 Alas, if technique is all you get out of Govan, then I'd say that you've not listened quite enough to his music mate ;)
Callern 8 months ago
@TheRooster456
If you understand max 10.000 words, you can't read understand a book containing 40.000 different words.
You'll be missing a lot of the story, details and "the point".
The same goes for music and the general answer is "technique doesn't move me".
The real answer is that you don't grasp his music and feel and that's just fine.
brosaguitar 8 months ago
@brosaguitar I'm a 5 year studio session guitarist. Trust me, I fully comprehend what he's playing. It's just boring.
TheRooster456 8 months ago
@TheRooster456 Its not boring for the people who respect and dig what hes playing
Kingding6 8 months ago
@TheRooster456 This isn't meant as an insult, but I seriously doubt that 5 years as a session worker will allow someone to "fully" comprehend a piece of music just like that, much less studio work. Formal lessons and theory for five years maybe (or less, I'd say 2 preferably 1 for learning and 1 for application), but session work just won't cut it. It just gets you street knowledge and know-how which can only take you so far.
tastytasters 8 months ago
@TheRooster456 But I do get that technique boredom feeling. It's the bane of any guitarist/ really, to always try and conjure something new and fresh. Lord damn me, I eventually got bored of petrucci/gilbert : \ and don't get me started on Joe sat. Not that they suck, it's just that people can get used to anything. Give it like a decade's time and some underground guitarists will blow today's legends out of the water (or at least par them)

@tastytasters We can only hope, and hope they come sooner than later. I hope it's a woman, boobs rule.

I"ll put money on the fact that every person who dislikes this video is probably a condsending blues "purist" who insists that playing slow is the only way to show any feeling or emotion...go and truly learn your instrument before you put down someone as amazing as Guthrie is

who's Chuck Morris? :-|
GuyFawkesGuitar 7 months ago
totally agree, to say he lacks accuracy is an opinion by a noob never played guitar. he used really fast licks and was very clean and not just the playing also his effects are very clean and thats why he was sounding not that well. he needs more distortion but at the solo you could see that he isnt perfect as well^^

no questions Guthrie is THE man. Mattias is a freakin gimmick; couldn't even stand on the same stage

I bought guthries album twice on accident. Normally something like that would piss me off. But i was glad i did anyway knowing that it was going to him. It's rare a guy is so good that you want to buy their album twice just for the hell of giving them more money.
TheWhocares233 9 months ago 2
@TheWhocares233 I applaud you. That's just awesome, same here. (not that I buyed his album twice, but he inspires it)

After a long consideration I have finally realised what makes Guthrie the best:
He can think as fast as he can play.
Contrary to the majority of technically accomplished guitarists Guthrie's note choice always makes musical sense even at blistering speeds.

My favorite guthrie govan song! He's the shit!
TheFigueroa007 10 months ago
Haha.. Iron Man.
krishroc 10 months ago
Let's be realistic. G3 will never be without Satriani and Vai, because it's Satriani's show, and Vai's a direct student of him. Guthrie could still perform as the honorary third guest, and Satch himself said he would want a show like that, but he wanted to wait until Guthrie had more material out on albums. Unfortunately, we're still waiting on another album because Guthrie's focusing more on actually creating a presence in the mainstream, in order to get SOMEBODY to buy his album this time.
TheSpoonman00 10 months ago
@TheSpoonman00 big shows with big budgets arent a jazz fusion thing either. It just isn't their style. A highly structured set with a big venue just isn't conducive the improvisational style that fusion guitar players are fond of. However this still isn't a good enough argument to justify the fact that their has been very little collaboration between fusion guitar players. There should be more of it. Richie Kotzen and Greg Howe's project was fantastic and it worked really well. no tour though
SirJamestheIII 10 months ago
@SirJamestheIII This video here is a great example of that rare fusion guitarist collaboration. Some of the best stuff I've seen with Guthrie has been his work with Dave Kilminster. If he ever decides to make a studio version of his sole contribution to ASIA, "Bad Asteroid", it needs to be with Kilminster.
TheSpoonman00 10 months ago
@TheSpoonman00

@zoso4563 Guthrie, Allan and Shawn Lane.
tudortoomey 11 months ago 23
@tudortoomey Actually, Allan... Guthrie and Shawn are probably the most unbelievable players ever on the electric guitar, and the control of the instrument they have is probably unmatched. But Allan is a musical genre by himself... An inspiration to all.
PapaDudeness 9 months ago
@PapaDudeness i'm curious, why do those guys destroy the likes of vai, gilbert and buckethead on the guitar?
turnbacktime 9 months ago
@turnbacktime my answer is that they are more skilled both technically and musically. I´ve been listening like a madman to all these "shredders" for a long time but when i started dicovering these fusion guys (Guthrie and Shawn) my mind was still blown by the level of muscicanship which really touches something inside me.
GuitarsOfArp 9 months ago
@turnbacktime
He needs to make albums and tour and make a name for himself before he can count himself on the level of Vai
hulldanfan 8 months ago
@hulldanfan Vai certainly eclipses Guthrie in the influential scale, but i don't think Vai has the edge musically. I think thats one of Guthrie's best traits. And one where most guitarists can not match him on.
Kingding6 8 months ago
@Kingding6
This is obviously a subjective issue. Guthrie has 1 album to his credit and 50% of his material on YT are different versions of 'Waves or Fives'. Much as I love these songs, I just cant compare the musicality with Vai's huge and diverse output and performances.
PS - Check out Guthre's version of Fives on Lee Ritenours '6 string theory' album - It has Tal Wilkenfield and Vinnie Colaiuta and blows the Erotic Cakes original out of the water
hulldanfan 8 months ago
@hulldanfan yea I saw that version, its pretty insane. Have you heard or watched Guthrie's stuff with the Fellowship? Its a bit more mellow and jazzy then the erotic cakes material.
