... all vernacular and ill of thought left me, the mist slowly parted, and in the stillness i felt the breath of God upon me, surely I considered, I have been wrong about it all ....
Falstocat: I know just how you feel! I have kept coming back to it for years. The final trigger was hearing it played at the end of a big cathedral service, two days before & I suddenly felt I could do it, even at the most popular service we have in the year. It takes a lot of hard work, but there is a strong element of having confidence, as well. The fugue is one of those pieces where getting the right tempo makes all the difference, as well. Good luck!
A really good performance of this challenging piece, which I played for the first time in public, yesterday, along with the Fantasia - not as well as this, of course. Most people, who do not play the organ, probably have no idea how thrilling it is physically to perform a masterpiece like this one.
@jakethecake1000, as far as this organ is concerned (and probably many other historical organs in this region), it is G-minor because it is tuned with A=466 Hz.
in studying counterpoint, ive learned its is not too hard to recreate cheap imitation bach, but man i could not imagine revolutionizing 18th century counterpoint as he did. NO ONE wrote fugues like he did, and no one will ever write fugues like he did again.
Maybe then you must lern to counterpoint like Reger and you have the Second Great Revoluzzer. Listen the Fugue from "Fantasie und Fuge c-Moll", op. 29. from Reger. So you can imagine some crosslinks between 18.th and 20.th Century. BTW: the Interpretation of Fugue BWV 552 is Average!... not more.
dont forget Bach's work went unappreciated and unplayed for almost 2 centuries before the "rediscovery" of his work and rightful assignment of him as a master in the 20th century. Makes you wonder what other "masterful" composers lie as paper in a library somewhere today.
@EdgeStormcrow, yes many of his works were unplayed and unappreciated by the public for a long time. But other composers in those intervening years (eg, Mozart and Beethoven) had thought highly of Bach when they encountered some of his music. And in the late 1820s Mendelssohn championed Bach and kicked off a revival.
@angryjalapeno i reckon bach's music isnt popular cuz its polyphonic and too difficult to listen to with the untrained ear. 99.99% of music is all homophonic and people arent used to this
@TheSolAlex - When you "couple" the "organs" together on the more modern electric organs they combine the sound in the "back". Back then the tracker movement coupled the manuals physically - hence them playing themselves.
@sophierose500 -> Just leave the people hear this music... If you don't like it keep that for you and don't annoy the other people with your fuc**** problems...
@sophierose500 This is one of Bach's greatest works. He has influenced a great deal of music composed to this day, and I'd argue that most music produced today is nowhere near the caliber he was able to produce centuries ago.
@sophierose500 Why would a witless bimbo like your rancid self think anybody is interested in seeing the evidence of your cultural ineptitude and aesthetic retardation?
Wow. Absolutely amazing. I may not be overly cultured or learned in regards to classical music, but I freaking LOVE Bach and this was one of the most amazing organ pieces I've ever seen and heard. It's amazing how Hans played it so flawlessly. He freaking ROCKED those foot pedals and he made it all seem so effortless. Granted, his expression looked like he was sucking a lemon through the whole thing, but I'd probably look that way too trying to play all those melodies at once. Bravo!
@maricahn ...you really didn't say that did you? You do know what couplers are right? You do understand the difference between the different key actions that organs have and that this one is not electric?
@CardinalPugwash I can tell I have reached a more educated/cultured group of Youtube commentators when people insult with "you cretin" instead of "you dumbass" hahaha
Everyone gives the credit to Bach in this piece and rightfully so, but half of it is in the interpretation of the piece and the other half Bach himself. Hans Andre Stamm is the winner in this video. Anyone can upload a video of this piece, but to actually execute it with this organ tuned to Bach's specs and in this manner is absolutely stunning. Raw living talent.
RoyHaPencil said it best- Bach is the greatest composer of all time. I mean, I love rock n roll, blues, soul, cajun bayou music, bluegrass, classical and romantic orchestral music, etc etc. But Bach is still the pinnacle. I don't know if he'll ever be beat.
I love Baroque Organ music, especially Bach's. Ever since very young, I've always had this thing for the old world, I love antiquity and the history that goes with it.
Although Herr Stamm could easily play circles around me any day of the week and multiple times on Sunday, I find that vacant look on his face to be very funny.
@Fozzymaple That "vacant look" must surely be concentration? There is enough expression and laughter in those grinning gargoyles on each side of the keyboards. A superb organ and organist. Can you fault the performance?
@angietihi I absolutely can not find fault with Stamm's performance. I'm sure that the vacant look on his face is concentration, it just strikes me as being one of those looks you might see on a cartoon character.
@Machru oh please. You want him to switch to different stops in the middle of it just for fun? Maybe make it sound like a circus tune or a jingle for caramel popcorn? Maybe throw in a nod to Lady Gaga? This guy is a professional musician not some clown on E! Tv.
Someone educate me on organs please. Why were the bottom row of keys moving on their own and how is this done? Is it pre-recorded using a machine? Is it foot pedals? Is it tied to the other keys he is playing?
@AnontheOP He is using a coupler, which basically link two different divisions of the organ together, It is a mechanical action designed to allow the organist to play a greater number of stops on a single keyboard. There are several different couplers wich "add together" divisions. I may be mistaken but I think he is using the Swell to Great coupler and the Great to Pedal coupler in this piece.
I hear this and I feel as if I am in the very presence of God and Bach is the gatekeeper. So pure and utterly emotional. This beautiful and my words can't even describe this at all.
@FilipGereg well, I agree with you but good is a subjective adjective... what is good for me is bad for my neighbour... pop has many commercial and stupid songs, but that doesnt mean there are no good pop songs...
What a fugue !The passage from about 3.20 to 3.33 here is the one that makes most organists wish they had taken up juggling instead ! I've heard so many great names "get out" or at least go fuzzy here. Another favourite place is the passage leading up to the long trill at 4.17.Thankfully I'm just a critic -and I can't juggle either. I like this but it's on the edge at times. It's a sensible tempo because I've yet to hear anyone keep it fully together any faster.
@stargirlsusan wow... some extreme fanboyism there, or fangirlsm there. plz stop saying bach is god's right hand. he's good but there are many good composers today and before. if u like some music just respect the composer no need to hail him as the new jesus
@estring123 LOL, when did i even imply Bach was in G-ds right hand? nor did i came close to saying that he is the only one. and what?! HAIL him as the new Jesus!?XD
"Bach wrote music for us" is this a lie?
In order to glorify G-d" did not he wrote that?
"AWESOME" whas this not?
Im surprice at how much you can extract from my simple comment.
@estring123 No fanaticism that I read into. Just exuberance at the music. A lot of people express resoundment at this music. The statement about writing music for us might be a bit extreme since he didn't know future generations would appreciate his music to the depths that they have, but he did compose to glorify God. Your assertion that the poster intended to convey a hailing of Bach as the new jesus is a fabrication.
@Kronimiciad He's just concentrating really hard is all. Pretty hard to make any kind of emoted face when your eyes are fixed on hundreds upon hundreds of fourth, eighth, and sixteen notes arrayed in a god-forsaken manner.
This man has every sense intact, he almost seems to become a part of the organ itself, this is true talent and he gives Bach the utmost respect with every note he strikes.
One of my very favorites, and I must not be the only one. Bach usually doesn't get 440,000 views. This one, the fugue in D major, the fugue in a minor, and the St. Anne. There are plenty more, of course. Mozart and Beethoven didn't have these to study. Which is a shame. Nobody, ABSOLUTELY nobody, comes anywhere within the same stratosphere as Bach when it comes to writing fugues.
Una de las obras más difíciles de esa parte del catálogo, todo un desafío para el intérprete, dominar esas articulaciones requiere mucha maestría, maestro.
@MrRasputin100, I think many composers of his time used this technique of ending a minor key piece with a major key chord. To me, it seems to musically represent something like hope, closure, happy ending.
@oOthuyngaOo It's NOT a song. (No-one is singing.) I think you mean, 'piece' (of music.) Sorry to be pedantic, but I hate this modern idea that any piece of music must be a song and, sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean by 'meter.'

Oh Bach ¡¡¡Siempre grandioso!!!
Javier141145 1 year ago

Bach is the greatest composer of all time.
This gut practically invented music.

@RoyHaPencil
He settled many principles of harmony, though I don't know if we can say he innovated.

Honestly, I think Bach should have ended this one on the minor version of that chord instead of the major, but then again, who am I to criticize him.
MrRasputin100 1 year ago
@MrRasputin100, I think many composers of his time used this technique of ending a minor key piece with a major key chord. To me, it seems to musically represent something like hope, closure, happy ending.

@oOthuyngaOo It's NOT a song. (No-one is singing.) I think you mean, 'piece' (of music.) Sorry to be pedantic, but I hate this modern idea that any piece of music must be a song and, sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean by 'meter.'
