  • nels can do anything. he became one of my fave guitarists after hearing watts, engine room cd. ive always liked moores interpretation of ornette colemans style as well, the free jazz expression on guitar. not for everyone, but really nothing either of these two have ever done is.

  • this is no different from metal shredders who can't control them selves, this guys are just using noise instead. Lame. whether u shred of use feedback and noise.... its always best to use it sparingly or it will it will be lame and cliche.

  • it wouldn't surprise me the slightest bit if nels cline was listening to every sonic youth record in the 80s, and it wouldn't surprise me if the nels cline singers were completely influenced by SY

  • hmm anyone who thinks this is more original than van halen needs to listen in context. When van halen came out NOONE sounded like that. if he came on the radio you knew it was him. He invented a style that was so copied that it seems unoriginal now. If moore etc came on the radio would you realy know it was him? it could easily be lou reed or hendrix etc. Im not saying VH is better but lets be honest, he was one of the most original ever. All 80's wank guitar was invented by him.

  • Those sounds are colossal =)

  • Ok, I watched the part 2 and thought this was a joke... But I think they're serious now...

This is some of the worst guitar playing I've ever heard. And to all you who are giving this so much credit for being new and unique, you must not play guitar. Anyone can make effects noise if you have enough pedals.

  • @plusmin09 "Anyone can make effects noise if you have enough pedals."

    And everyone should.

  • @mfantham Everyone except for accomplished musicians that want to use the skills that took them much longer to develop than it does to buy a bunch of electronics and read a few instruction manuals.

Maybe good for the economy if everyone buys a bunch of pedals though...

  • @plusmin09

I’m sorry that you can't distinguish an individual artistic pursuit from the formative means necessary to make something “good”. Mariah Carey must rival Rimbaud, or Van Gogh using your logic?

Art isn’t about talent; It's about expressing an honest, original idea. I’m not saying an artist must deliberately be untrained, but it's naïve to think that just because something doesn't fit within the conventions of generally accepted practice that it is somehow less worthy of artistic merit.

  • @mfantham Not fitting in isn't what makes this music suck. You talk about expression, but what does strumming strait 8th notes on your guitar while having as many pedals as possible on at the same time for 4 whole minutes really express? And that's not just one song!

I'm sorry you can't distinguish good, compared to trying to look enlightened and above everyone in your choice of music, just to mask your actual lack of understanding because it's too "mainstream".

    Indie hipster 101.

  • @plusmin09

I listen to pop and “mainstream” music. Sonic Youth is essentially pop music, and it was through their videos that I came upon this link. I never said that something has to be obscure or abstract to be art, but merely that “fitting in” has nothing to do with the merit of a piece of art. How on earth did I claim to be more enlightened or above anyone else? It would be nice to have a critical discussion without being branded with pithy personal insults, but then again, this is YouTube.

  • @mfantham No, fitting in doesn't give credit to any art, but, like you said, neither does simply being obscure or abstract. So, putting that aside, what merit can you actually give to this music? Rhythm, hooks, significant displays of theory or technique, evident concepts all seem to be missing in this music. What do you respect in it?

You didn't claim to be more enlightened, but you expressed it with your implication that I'm unable to understand any art deeper than bubble gum pop.

  • @plusmin09 I hear rhythm. Hooks? oh you mean like pop? Displays of theory or technique? their theory is that guitar is a glorious instrument...and technique....seems the technique they are using is to strum the strings behind the saddles along with some other repetitive rhythms playing on the higher frets.

My question to you and everyone else is: What is Art/Music? Music to me is sound. And art to me can be anything basically. Art is in the eye of the beholder.

  • @brw0044 Art is in the eye of the beholder. That's very true, but my question was why you beholders actually respect this when there is so much more art out there that actually deserves it. What really catches your eye (or ear) in this art?

This "music" sounds like a jumbled, overdriven, blurry mess with delay on top. If you put anyone and a guitar in front of a huge pedal board and tell them to do whatever, as long as they use as many pedals as possible, you'll get pretty much the same sound.

  • @plusmin09 "why you beholders".....lol like "you people"??? See now you are saying theres so much more art out there that actually deserves my respect. So it is your opinion that this "art" does not deserve my respect....which isn't your call to make. What catches my ear? Well first of all I'm a fan of these artists work outside of this gig. Second of all I'm a guitar player so I love hearing guitar thrashing. So are you judging the "art" based on the tools/technique used? Because it is "easy"?

  • @plusmin09 I used to intellectulize music a lot more...now I just listen to whatever I like. which includes a wide range. For some reason sonic youth noise shows seems to fire people up on youtube. Some people love it some people hate it. This goes for most pieces of "art".When I was a kid my uncle took me to the museum to look at splatters, and straight lines on a canvas. and flowers.I thought it was ridiculous that this was "high art" because it seems so easy. Art is in the eye of the beholder

  • @plusmin09 now having said all that. There are many people that simply join the crowd and then pull elitist bs....like "you just don't get it". which means the ones whom do get it are just smarter...or more enlightened or something to that effect. And I think we're all guilty of this to some extent. Buuut for some reason the elitist always seem to be in abundance on the net. ya I just said net.

  • @brw0044 Ya, you "beholders" as in a reference to your previous post.

It's obviously my opinion that this art doesn't deserve as much respect as you're giving it, and I stated real reasons why I don't think they deserve it. You spent 3 posts defending why you're free to listen to it, which I don't disagree with. All I'm wondering is why?

You talk about fan loyalty to Sonic Youth and Wilco, but that doesn't explain you liking the music. I like Audioslave, but I don't care for Sound Garden.

  • @brw0044 I like Weezer, but hate the Red Album. You're not obligated to like everything an artist puts out.

Ya, I'm bashing it because it has no diversity in feeling, if any feeling at all. And it's incredibly easy to make pure noise on guitar with all the types of effects pedals there are now a days.

"You just don't get it" Perfect explanation for this type of music. No, I don't get it, but neither do you, otherwise you'd be able to give real reasons.

  • @plusmin09 "real reasons"??? This convo is a joke. I like it because nels cline is wearing a blue shirt. You spend much time commenting on a youtube vid that you don't like. why don't you cruise on over to something you do like. I didn't say I gave this "respect"...that was your assumption. I give thurston and nels respect. this is simply a couple dudes rockin out in a record store. if you don't like it don't listen to it. I don't like nickelback but you don't see droppin comments on their vids

  • @plusmin09 Hahaha. Weezer???? We're just on different pages. and I was referring to others saying "you just don't get it" ...that wasn't my stance. lol if you're saying I don't get two guys strumming on their guitars...then lets just end this convo now. because you'd rather just bash the video and the music rather than come to an understanding that peoples tastes and opinions vary. I don't have to explain to you why I like something. Neither do you. So go on and watch a weezer video. and I won't

  • @brw0044 The comment boards are for leaving comments and having discussions. If I didn't want to do that I would just watch vids and never type anything.

I never said you have to explain your tastes, or post a comment. I just replied to your comment to try and hear some intelligent reasons why you like this crap. You don't have any, but no matter, I'm not worried.

  • @plusmin09 haha fuk off. I told you my reason for liking it. I like nels blue shirt. go suck rivers preteen cock.

  • @plusmin09 lol. annnnd sonic youth are the masters of pop and have written plenty of "hooks"

  • @mfantham PS, nice try comparing a pop star to respected artists in two completely different mediums of art. Reveals even more how little you really know about music.

  • put brian chippendale in there and it would be lightning bolt

  • sorry I don't get one here daily like you, to watch videas I don't even like... I just can't keep up with you cool guy

  • van halen's gay haha

  • one of my favorite records, great!

  • ..douchebag mullet farmer-type guitar weedler! I love it!

  • noise rocks be cool man

  • Nels Cline also does all of Coltrane's Interstellar Space-- trust me, that's way beyond the capability of your average douchebag mullet farmer-type guitar weedler.

Even then, guitar pissing contests are for a) 17-year-olds and b) bitter 45-year-olds whose hair band never made it. For the rest of us, either the music is good, or it's shit.

Technique exists to serve the music. Technique for technique's sake is bullshit.

  • @FuzzBob

"Nels Cline also does all of Coltrane's Interstellar Space"

where exactly does he do it ? between his shagging and playing this shit schedule probably ? i bet coltrane wanted to play guitar after watching neals cline play this shit right ?

whats next ? john mayer is starting a band with roy eldridge and frank gambale ?

  • @jazzstan89

Don't be fooled, the man can actually rip.

  • @FuzzBob right on

  • @FuzzBob what a load of crap, I want these 4 minutes back, that AIN'T Technique it's an excuse for playing like crap.

  • if you dont like it. there is plenty other stuff to check out..

  • The best part of guitar playing is the subjectivity of its critics. Someone may say this is better, simply because it is different than the status quo. VH and RR and amazing guitar players, but they are not adding anything new to the sonic mix. Nels Cline is simply striving to find a unique voice, and approach to his instrument. Music is not a competition, it is a individual persuit of expression.

  • @BillyPolaris Im qouting the last part of this.

  • @BillyPolaris cannot agree more.

  • Troll4moarlulz is just searching thurston moore and talking shit at every video, fuck this kid... and if you really listen to van halen and think it's better than wilco or sonic youth, you're not on drugs, you're just fucking retarded

  • @songandletter You take your time out of the day to respond to a 3 month old comment? How does that fit into the "normal" spectrum at all? BTW, how is Sonic Youth better than Van Halen?

  • congrats you just did the same (clap clap)

oh and the answer is... in everyway

  • @songandletter Again. You are proving your mental incompetence by responding to an old comment I completely forgot about.

  • This was strange....what was happening in their minds?

  • WTF did I just watch? That was awful.

  • yeah. il go jam some harmonics

  • oh my god. I can finally die happy.

  • Swanic youth

  • Me quedo con la primera parte, esto que se lo fumen solos.....

  • pues que putito

  • che figata!sempre e solo noise!

  • indeed

  • Ace.
