  • ok, can someone help me. new to perth, want to come and watch some games. cant find any info on the gridiron wa website about schedules or anything, i live in quinns rocks, near mindarie, any teams up that way? ive played over 15 seasons and may be interested in helping out a littlle too, cheers

  • @shturne

Hey mate. Games are on Saturdays at either North Beach Rugby Club in North Beach, or Hilton Park, Hilton.

We are play tonight(6th) at 7pm down at North Beach.

There are current fixtures up on the Gridiron West website, there in the top menu just below the logo next to the "home" tab.

We train every tuesday/thursday at 7pm at south perth rugby club off manning rd if you want to come down, we'd be more than happy to find you a spot helping/coaching/playing or whatever you like.

  • I take it this is gridiron football being played by Australians? There is some fairly sophisticated stuff going on out there. Who is coaching you? (ex -pat American?) What is the age of the players?

I am american and played football till college, then picked up rugby in college. I would be interested to hear wht the guys who have played both sports think the sports compare.

  • @JEJMDTD

Hey mate. The Blitz are coached by an Irishman of all people, he is rarely sober. But has a long history of playing and coaching both here in Australia as part of the Blitz and our state team the Western Australian Raiders, as well as back in Ireland in local teams and the National Irish team. Players ages range from 18 too our oldest Olinemen at 43.

  • @JEJMDTD

Majority of us are Aussies, but we usually have a few American guys rolling through who have played anywhere from highschool too Div2 college ball, even a Canadian college WR at one stage. Their arn't a lot of American coaches in our league, more players. Couple WR's, LB's, and a QB.The Australian team will be coached by John Leijten, who coached in the NFL Europe, took his team too 2-3 championship games winning one.I havnt played much Rugby so ill leave that too someone else. Hahaha

  • @Joey1206 Interesting! I was surpised first to see gridiron played in Australia, now I hear it is played in Ireland! For a while too! Is your team a pro team, or are you amateurs? Is there pro football "down under"?

How did you come to play football? What postion do you play?

As to drunk Irish coaches, when I first played rugby in college, we were drunk all the time, and many of us were of Irish descent, so maybe you need that to get a crazy sport like gridiron (or rugby).

  • @JEJMDTD

No were all amateurs. The sport is nowhere near big enough here too pay anybody. We pay for everything when it comes too interstate comps and the world cup every 4 years. It is growing though, slowly. I started playing as my Dad is American and brought me up on it, others just hear about it through friends or see us playing and come watch. Most play it as an off season sport from Rugby or AFL.

I play WR for our 1st team, and QB for our reserves side, "the boltz". I'm #7 in this video.

  • @Joey1206 Nice block at 1:15. I saw your catches too, but as a former OLB I have more respect for hitting than catching the ball ; ). So there is a World Cup too? I really had no idea!

Well, good luck - I hope you keep playing for a long time. Also, I recommend the other side of the ball. You can get some pretty good shots in from the defensive side too.

And try rugby. It really is a lot of fun.

  • @JEJMDTD

Haha, thanks mate. I get a better one in the first clip. Its the same play but i come from the far side a level a LB =D

Search wikipedia for gridiron world cup, theres a bunch of info there.

  • @Joey1206 You fucking crushed that guy! Did he quit playing after that? ; )

OLB = Outside Line Backer = a name used in a 4-4 or a 3-4 defense. (I can't tell your opponents configuaration because of the camera angle, but it looks like you creamed an OLB in the opening clip)

How did you get the arrow to appear? I think it is a great tool, but can't figure it out.

  • @JEJMDTD yeah i know what an OLB is :)

Most teams run 3-4. I think we're the only one that really changes our D front alot.

its just a tool in the editing program i have. Coral edit 3x or something. You can just draw all over your video, its cool as hell. hahaha

  • @Joey1206 I got mixed up with your emoticon "a LB=D" - I thought you were sort of asking me... never mind.

Well, I sure hope the sport grows over there.

In the US, high school football coaches frown on/forbid their players from playing rugby. College football players are absolutely forbidden from playing rugby (or any other sport except maybe track). Is it the same over in Autralia except reversed? Do Austrlian universites give out athletic scholarships?.

  • @JEJMDTD Ahhh, haha, all good.

No athletic scholarships. Our sport/s are run completely different from the US. Most sports have nothing to do with schools or universities/colleges. I personally prefer the US way of doing things, tying schools with teams etc, but not the case here. As far as i know, our WAFL / VFL leagues (similar too what college ball is too NFL is the states) is all owned/run privately.

I do know that if you play in the WAFL and VFL you arnt allowed to play any other sports.

  • @Joey1206 More and more interesting. Do the WAFL/VFL games draw big crowds or TV coverage? If so, do the athletes get any of that?

So there are no school teams - other than maybe a bunch of guys from the same school forming a club?

  • Thanks xxxxStarmanxxxx
