1) Lots of practice and influence from various genres. It helps me stay a little diverse and keep me creative.

2) I normally stay around some variation of an F scale. I am tuned to Drop C as well (CGCFAD).

3) When starting out, learn your octaves, thirds, and fifths and use the as general guide lines. Also practice the scales up and down the neck. You'll start to learn where to go. :)

i currently know the pentatonic major and minor scales like the back of my hand, but they're a bit too...classic rock sounding....except if your kirk hammet haha, but yeah, where can you get a list/diagrams of scales? i looked on the net a while ago but surprisingly couldnt find anything :(

You can get posters of a good deal of the scales at guitar centers website (and probably any music store). On the GC website just search for "posters" and they will pop right up. I have the Blue, Green, and Orange ones. Oh, and when I said I use a variation of an F scale... I was refering to if I were in standard tuning/drop d.
