I was 13 years old and listening to this fight on the radio in 1964. Liston was the scariest man in the world; Sports Illustrated had an article on the 4-5 fighters who'd managed to go the distance with Liston; all had done so my running. Didn't get to see the actual fight video till this was broadcast 25 years later. The 6th is a glimpse of Ali's greatness to come. And for the next 3 years, before they stripped his crown, he was the greatest heavyweight ever.
@MrBillfitz dude your right ali is a great and we just cant compryhend how good he was. and ali beat joe the last two fights they had and yes after the lay of ali's reflex's had eroded so he wasnt as slick as he was when young. but dude the first fight had no politics influencing the decision thats bull shit joe dominated the first fight.
This what people who don't know what the fuck they're talking about confuse with the Thrilla in Manila. I see tons of posts saying Ali didn't want to come out for the 15th round against Frazier and asked Dundee to cut his gloves off. OKAY - YOU ARE ALL WRONG!! HE DID NOT TELL DUNDEE TO CUT OFF HIS GLOVE AGAINST FRAZIER - ALI WOULD DIE FIRST. HE SAID THAT AGAINST LISTON, AND ONLY BECAUSE HE WANTED TO PROVE LISTON WAS CHEATING. ALI WAS KICKING SONNY'S ASS UP TO THIS POINT. KNOW YOUR FACTS!!!!!
Brown has such a mancrush on Ali it's ridiculous. Holding on like it's his woman or something. Rudy is gettin pissed and I've seen Ali get mad at that quite a few times as well. "Get off him!"
Many years later, David Remnick uncovered hearsay evidence that Liston’s gloves had been juiced by his cornerman Joe Pollino, a tactic they’d also used against Eddie Machen and Cleveland Williams. Pollino was said to have used an astringent that blinded a man just long enough for Liston to lay some leather on him..
@Frequent2001 Watch an audience with Muhammad Ali. He gives a candid, insightful and surprising story on what happened. It was a common cheating tactic when shit was run by the mob.
nutn was wrong wit sonnys left shoulder...right b4 bell bell rang to end the round sonny was throwing the left hand...if his shoulder was out of socket it would not hv been possible....he was simply tired of getn beat up...wut a champ :-/
I think Liston might have had the same psychological issues as Tyson. If their offense didn't work they didn't have a plan B or C physically or mentally and eventually became frustrated and shut down. While Liston was a great fighter I have a hard time seperating what's real and what's not due to his ties with the mob and personal issues. Amazing fighter but not in my personal top ten.
I love ali to death , but I think the black muslim society called sonny liston directly and noone else and told him to throw the fight but make it look good and tell nooone, I mean noone , if you do fail in what we tell you we will kill you .
I think a true champ would have gone back out against Ali, even if he had a torn ligament in his bicep. Ali kept fighting Norton with a broken jaw. But the fact is, even a half blind Ali could not be hit. Amazing.
2: 38 " Sonny fired his best left hook so far " But hold on a minute ! Didnt he have a bad shoulder ? Dam teef ! He quit cos Ali said he was gonna knock him out in round 8.
man ali is truly exceptional, just imagine your first crack at the crown, and you get blinded against a formidable slugger like liston, who was the tyson of his day, how ali managed to keep his cool and not panic, is truly remarkable, would marciano have survived if he was blinded like that, or henry cooper, the answer is a resounding no...ali had backbone mate, the bravest and most courageous fighter the world has ever seen end of
@TheMagic7man Marciano was almost blind in several fights 'cause of his nasty cuts in his eyes and nose that he had many times, but he was always in front and making ko's like the super slugger he was. Just see his fights.
In a Liston book I read, Sonny Liston when to the hospital afterwards and they found out he ripped his upper left bicep. His camp knew beforehand that he had the problem, but they thought it was no big deal beating Ali, 2 or 3 rounds most.
If you look closely a round 3 on Liston has to snap his left jab when he throws.

muhammed ali was th greatest. he won the first joe frazier also
but politics got involved in the decesion making process.
But if I live to be 100yrs old never will I understand how such a great
showman would ever change such a perfect name as Cassius Marcelles Clay
to the outlandish Muham. ali. Can anyone imagine Elvis doing such a
stupid thing. (please no relegion emails,,,please, I'm as right as islam is not)

@karlosed Exactly why Ali would have stopped him in 4 or 5 rounds easily. Fight never would have entered round 6.
