When Hornby introduced the 'realistic chuffing noise', to their range of train sets, they would never have imagined how much emotion it could produce, nearly forty odd years later.
@Santanser I came pretty close to that myself - and no wonder. That was a truly emotional moment, seeing James May finally make it from Barnstaple to Bideford with No. 4472, quite a massive achievement for a 40-year-old model locomotive.
I feel a bit bad for the germans

Bit of a shame German train didn't get a welcome but arriving at such a late time, cannot blame people for going to bed!

German train should have got a welcome. I would have stayed up just because they were such good sports about the whole thing.

Good God, I had a tear in my eye looking at the silly bastard. What ludicrousness. It was the music, that's what it must have been.
*sniff*
God rest you, Bill Sparshaft, or however the bloody hell you spell your name. God rest you, whatever consonants you may use. God rest you, Sir.

I feel sorry for the poor German steam train, seemed completely unloved and unwanted at the end, much like a miniature Ford Scorpio.
