FYI, for those of who may think that Stanley Jordan invented the Free Hand tapping technique, he did not. Emmet Chapman developed it in the early 70s, along with the Stick, and tuning in 4ths, while Stanley was a child. No doubt Jordan popularized the technique some, and was excellent at it.

Carlos Vamos is certainly one of the foremost masters of the technique at this time. Beautiful playing, without overt gimmickry.

actually i think it was Jimmie Webster who worked for D'Armond Pickups and developed the style to show off the sensitivity of the pickups .. Barney Kessel was also using the style when Emmet built a guitar designed for tapping. BUT tapping has existed in some form or another for 100's of years .. for example , a few violinist tapped .

quite right you are. I didnt want to bring in the violin tapping since thats a distinctly different instrument, but could be the origins, although right hand hammering has been used by classical guitarists for probably the same amount of time. Of course, none of this takes away from the fact that Carlos is a goddammed master, and beautiful player.

Yeah , i love that cool lick he does in the Jimi Hendrix song it's like a reverse rasguedos / finger fanning , almost like snapping his fingers upwards but brushing the strings with a lot of force. His right hand is so impressive when picking or tapping .. really wish he'd post a new acoustic solo video.

Saw this guy busking in Leicster Square, London 97 or 98. Bought an album from him Harmony Conflict it's just amazing. He used a bank of effects along with 2 samplers running into 2 small combos. The sound was amazing it drew me in from about 100 yards!
