2. Drum Core Professionals use it. tiny program, quick loads, tones of acoustic samples played by pros
3. Addictive Drums drums load fast. Sound Clean. Fantastic sound without mixing. Control of room sounds.
4. SuperiorDrummer2.0. Killer mixer. multiple outputs. Drums finished sounding. Creative control. Flexible. Use EZ Drummer within it. At least 2gb ram.
5. BFD 2."mature", Midi Mapping easy. mixer is impressive. A lot of drum sets. "I use BFD 2"
@BlackflamezzProduct Don't tell him that, let him figure out how to get cracks or keygens and he'll be set.. shit, ive done it for Camtasia Studios, Sony Vegas Pro 10, Fruity Loops Studio 10, and Photoshop CS5.1 Extended.. I am looking to do home recording with my band we play metalcore music and we dont have a drummer! lol, i want to be able to build my own drum tracks fairly easily and quickly with double bass and rapid bits. I dont want to be trapped in pre-made loops i want to take credit for our own software drum creations you know? I am using a mac with garageband looking to upgrade to logic express 9 can you suggest a software please? id really appreciate it im lost! haha
Idk if anyone has already sugested Kontakt Abbey Road :) But it has some positive points too, as well as many downsides hehe
Great vid, informative, as usual! I use all of them you reported, exactly like you said, for every particular style and purpose :)
I have a question that you might be the one able to fulfil, about how do I conect my e-drum through a firewire soundboard? :S And on to the computer, what else do I need?
What would you recommend if I already have real acoustic drum tracks, but I want to replace them with triggering (replace the kick and snare) within the plug-in. Thxs.
I`m totaly noob at this... Can someone please tell me step by step how to get my DD501 drumkit to work wit EZdrummer. I have installed the program but can not find it on my computer.. The drumset is connected to the pc by usb and drivers is installed.. I run windows7.. I assume that i need some other software/ drivers to get it working... PLEASE HELP!!
ok please say which software stands out more to you than the rest even if its just slightly to be honest i dont like addictive drums as not that good sounding i am likeing bfd what do you think please help me
@shawking Personally I would say EZdrummer. It has a super simple learning curve. You can also set it to multitrack out so if you want to add effects you can do so in a DAW.
Hey dude thanks for the info on the drum apps. There are a few that I haven't heard or tried so I will check them out. Do you have an opinion on Spectrasonics Stylus RMX?
hey Mikey, thanks for greate informations. My problem is this I am currently using Addictive drums and it is really good sound, but none of the drum softwares including AD giving easy way of changing patterns on the fly you have to use the mouse to do it. do you know any easy way or how you handle that if your using Addictive drums live? knowing that I have Novation SL mk2 controls lots of things. vs real drum machins are easier to control and jump to patterns on fly.
iam a guitarist, iam planning to compose my own instrumental covers soon, just wondering, what is the best software i could use and easily learned? :) thanks!
Mikey, can you please help me decide, I am thicking of buying EzDrummer with the MetalHead EZX Plugins. Do you recommend Superior Drummer 2.0 with The Metal Foundry SDX plugins? by any chance do you know the diffrents between MetalHead EZX vs. The Metal Foundry SDX.
@MikeyVPT hi mikey , i have a question , can i do everything you do with my alesis dm5 module instead if the alesis IO ?? and with an acoustic with with drum triggers?
I don't know too many people that even SAY Terry Barzzio - I've only ever heard him called Bozzio......alright I'm nit-picking!
I fould this to be very helpful and informative, but would have liked to have heard some demos, although I'm sure they will be on here elsewhere, so thanks Mikey.
It would be cool if you could do a general, step-by-step tutorial on how to setup an e-kit to a VPT. Im currently trying to use Addictive Drums with my Yamaha DTXplorer through a Lexicon Lambda Studio in Sonar 8 Producer and can't figure it out for the life of me. I've even had problems with setting up EZDrummer in the same way. There are tons of videos on youtube showing people playing e-kits through VPTs but none instructing on setup not even from the companies making these VPTs. Please help.
I'm a hobby drummer and have been playing acoustic kit(s) for quite some time. Just dipped my toe in the VPT world and purchased the Alesis DM10 Pro kit. My application is pure playing enjoyment so my question is, what software package do you recommend which offers the largest variety of realistic sounding acoustic kits from which to choose. I have interest in recording or studio editing/apps. Just plain and simple a deep library of good-sounding acoustic drum samples.
I have a question, I've been looking into getting one of the programs from toontrack, and I'm not sure what program to use for them, any ideas? I'm looking to just make my own custom metal music, and nothing more. Also something easy to use. I'm a newbie to these programs, never tried any of this before.
You KNOW it's a Drum Kit from Hell when the name of the application is a direct reference to Panteras "Cowboys From Hell" album.
If your a drummer, you know what I'm talking about when I say that when Vinnie Paul brings it, he fucking brings it, for example, the kick pattern for Becoming, at first, it's enough to make you loose a foot and shit a brick. lol
i really appreciate the video doc im a hip hop & r&b producer and im getting into rock country etc and im looking for great programs to use thanks alot.
But you are a beginner drummer,so maybe your application is very different than say a pro. Do you play live alot? And your genre would be a deciding factor in what you pick. What would you say a good pick would be say for a pro that plays every weekend? And plays blues to old rock and old country to new country and new rock, and some pop, like Pink.
hey mikey i just got superior drummer 2.0 and im having trouble gettting it to run through my logic 9 as a plugin or even getting my track over to it any help?
So dude, I'm just starting home studio recording and process, kind of a beginner, which of these you'd recomend me? Sorry for bad english. Thx for video btw.
Mike, hpoefiully in the direction of Danny Carey of Tool I bought a the Mandala Drum USB drum pad. How should I go about adding/incorperating this to my existing acoustic set, like he does, or a better way for a beginner? Also software to use to get the sounds of tool, ministry, marilyn manson, NIN, skinny puppy...ect. ? What ( budget conscience) hardawre/software to use? Can you go through other drum pads available ie Korg Wave drum? Great post
Ok finished trying Drumcore 3 free. The sounds are pretty good, for free probably the best. Toms are the weak link as usual for free VST versions.
But I cant change the velocity!!!? How can I do it?? There is no option for it I dont have enuff range, dynamics just adds random velocity hits.... If anyone knows that be great.
Out of the free ones Mdrummer is the best I tried so far. BFD2 free version isnt so great but ok. Downloading the free version of DrumCore now. If I had to buy so far Id ve choosing Addictive drums I like the interface and u can get your veloicity curve perfect, sounds are great too.
HOW ABOUT TELLING PEOPLE THAT YOU MUST HAVE PROTOOLS OR SOME OTHER HOST/SEQUENCER SOFTWARE FOR ADDICTIVE DRUMS.....IM OUT $200 BECAUSE THE IDIOT AT GUITAR CENTER DIDNT KNOW THAT. I DONT USE DIGITAL RECORDING AND DONT HAVE PROTOOLS.
hey what would you say is the best for dance or house tracks, that sort of thing? at the moment im using drumsynth live and to be honest it sounds shit unless you spend a hours fiddling with it
i dont kno anythin bout software and i one to start up a home recording studio. wat would u recommand i use? i need jus one software that can do a complete and finished work, thnks mikey
BFD2 is the best and EZ drummer is more about messing around with it...so it depends on what you want... obviously BFD2 is the best but it might not be the best for you. :p
Hello you seem to be well versed in VPT software. I am trying to find out if EZDRUMMER or someother sftware will alow me to play in a drum part in real time with myelectronic drum kit. I am wanting to be able to decide to add a cover to my set list and if it is a 3 minute song play it in in 3 minutes.
hey mikey, just a quick question. do any of these allow you to write drums instead of using loops. for example can it do what music programms can do where you put the notes in it plays whatever your write (i can write because im a drummer but dont like the limeted sounds on music programs)
Hey Mikey. Thanks a lot for the video and the tips. I currently use the BFD light (came with Alesis I/O). I found a copy of BFD2 upgrade that says I need to own BFD to upgrade. Do you know if I can upgrade from BFD light ?
Thank you SO much for this. - I'm getting some music together, but I can do all but drums. - So I've been looking for software drum-machines, and now I'm spoilt for choice!! - Cheers!
nice vid, but i have a question, do you use the vsts as outputs to a real drum kit or are you recordings sequenced???. at the time i dont have a drummer or a drum set to record my music with, so im using vsts, but i was wondering if you cal get a real pro sound using only these programs..
i dont know if i made my self clear its kinda hard for me to use this tecnical lenguage in english. lol
It's settled~ I'll go with "EZdrummer, Superior Drummer 2.0, & Addictive drums"...Though I think I'll use Addictive drums more since it is pretty more user friendly & e-drum frinedly, pretty fast, pretty damn good drum kits & pretty easy to use...thnx for the heads-up mikey..this helped allot...xD
@MikeyVPT hi mikey very much appreciated video mY friend, Ive been playing guitar couple of years now and am looking to make a few tracks at home , based upon this video im looking at ezdrum or addictive drums , im currently using cakewalk music creator 3 ( came free with my samson usb mic hahaha) are these 2 softwares compatable with cakewalk music creator do you know?? or can you recomend a decent affordable interface that will be compatable with ez drum or addictive drum. THANKS !!
Thank you so much Mike. I'm a pro guitarist/singer/engineer etc. This is the video I've been looking for. Thanks for taking the time. Greatly appreciated.
@MikeyVPT Yeah man, trying to get into making music can be REALLY frustrating sometimes. It seems like it's all a big clique where only insiders know how to get stuff working, but thanks to people like you who break it down into simple, digestable terms, we can all learn a lot in a short space of time. Thanks.
Mike, I like your style. I've been wanting to get back into drumming, again and had a question. I'd like to start a jazz method so my style is at least jazz influenced since i'll never be a legit jazz player and wondered if you have suggestions for methods. I hear Peter Erkstine's method is good. Any thoughts?
@allbutnatural : You must be the biggest knuckle head to say "crap like mj madonna". MJ & Madonna have had some of the best drummers playing on studio stuff and live performances.
I was very amazed at the control and quality of Jonathan Moffett, especially his cymbal control. Most drummers will hit their cymbals live and just let them ring every single time; Jonathan seems to understand and takes the time to accentuate pieces of a song by truly controlling the cymbals/drums when playing live.
You can have gods playing the drums, i still couldnt care less, i came here to get a list of good softwares.. if i wanted to hear mj madonne i would search that name.. Which is why, eis crap i tell you!
What would you suggest as the best software for creating fast paced punk/hardcore drum tracks but without using any sort of midi input to control it? i.e. just manually programming the drum tracks but getting a real sound and having the option of alot of different kit makes/sounds?
Man, i've used EZ Drummer DFH to record some Death Metal songs, well the sound is not bad..but it's WEAK!!! and what i mean by weak that even rising us the drums volume cannot do any good, i can barely hear the snare or the kick drum, i thought of equalizing it but no improvement, so Is it the software is not good enough for extreme heavy music?
Do you know if there's a device to split the trigger signals so that I can run one batch into a Roland or Alesis DM and the other set into the computer for triggering software?
Or I guess I can just run the midi out from the modules into the computer, huh? Would that make it harder to match the midi notes if I wasn't using that Alesis trigger I/O?
Hi, I was thinking of using my electonic drum kit to trigger some drum sounds from one of these softwares so i can hopefully make more realistic sounding drum tracks.
i like both AD and EZdrummer, AD has a wider range of setting the sound of all componets which Ezdrummer has not but ezdrummer has a clear tone and a lot of patterns. I use them for techical death metal so it is very important fot me that the overall sound has to be clear and. Addictive drums in the other hand is quite muddy
thanks for this video. great insight on each of these. quick question: which would you choose as the best sounding? i.e., what sounds most like real drums? thanks!
I think BFD2 sounds most like raw drums, SD2.0 sounds most like produced drums, AD has the most presets that I can apply to my projects of different genres, EZD sounds good if I need to play out a beat, or add some loops to some guitar riffs, DC2.5 sounds good if I want something in the style of famous drummers.
Does that help?!
They're all good! I would appreciate it if you purchased any of this software at VirtualPercussionOutlet(.com) That's my site!
Surely! All you do is go out of the DM5 MIDI output with a MIDI to USB cable to your computer.
Your Addictive Drums can recognize this device and allow you to trigger the software like that. If it's not already MIDI mapped to trigger the proper drum sounds, you can assign the MIDI notes in your module to match the samples in your software.
I don't have a DM5 because I use the Alesis Trigger IO which does exactly that... it lets me map the MIDI notes to my RET edrums. Make sense?
Just want to say for PC owners a FREE drum machine is available from d-lusion (dt-010 drum station which is based on the Roland TR-909 drum machine). It works pretty well, is easy to use if you read the documentation, and best of all, its FREE
Great video Mikey, helped me alot. I use EZDrummer DFH and was looking for a better metal drum sound, so i think i'll get BFD2 and make my own sound. Thanks!
you said you use ezdrummer for practice? does it mean that it's not a good software?
I don't know anything about drums, i am a guitar player, i don't know how to play drums or anything about them? which software do you think is best for me to add drums to my songs?
I use EZD more for practice and quick recording, only because I use Superior Drummer 2.0 for more of my in depth projects. EZD is GREAT sounding, just like SD2, but it doesn't have all of the on board control like SD2. You can still use all the great sounds from the EZX packs in SD2, also.
I think the best if you're looking for easy would be Addictive Drums (check my channel for an AD video), but if you're looking for deep sounds, go for SD2!
hey mikey im new at recording and such. i have a yamaha dtxplorer and im looking to record and also get new sounds for the kit, i was looking at addictive drums but im not sure if i need an audio interface first or if AD comes with all the inputs and outputs so that my kit plugs into my computer easily please help
Otherwise- if, like me, you eventually replace all your sequence with a real drummer, just use the kits that come with your DAW. Honestly. These products require real effort to make them sound real. And hip hop producers!: elsewhere peeps. Elsewhere. trust me. there's probably a dude on CL that'll sell you his vinyl grabs for less.
no matter what- the most important part of the equation is the performance itself. these are ALL high end libraries with GEORGOUSLY recorded samples. If all you ever do is program in a quantized beat they are ALL gonna sound like a CASIO's auto-accompany shit. If you pay the money for any of these you either better have a drummer that performs it on a micdi kit or REALLY understand groove quantize.
hi, i need a program that allows me to play from my pc keyboard, what would you recommend. If it doesnt need a soundboard it would be even better, cause im planning to play live with my laptop.
live 7. u can download infinite drum kits, and play them easily on ur computer keyboard. and if u ever feel like making melodies, there are instruments as well
I would recommend Addictive Drums or EZdrummer. Both sound great, but you need a host for Addictive Drums like Cubase or something. EZdrummer has more expansion and add-on packs, too.
Both have their pro's, so you really can't go wrong with either of those. Check out the Virtual Percussion Outlet website for really great pricing on cool gear. I would appreciate it!
Why thank you! I do my best to get the most useful information out there. It's not every day that you come across someone who has use of 200 drum sets, triggered from a great feeling, awesome looking RET Percussion set...
these programs are prety nice... for example... i want to get the Addictive Drums,, but do i need to have something to play the music or i can just play it with the keyboard's hot keys??
It's good. It's a big program, with a lot of drum samples. It takes a good ear to tweak those samples, but once you get it where you want it, the possibilities are endless!
DFH works within Superior Drummer 2.0 or EZdrummer. Both of those work as a plugin or standalone. They work well in Logic, or Digital Performer, Cubase, Cakewalk, ProTools, etc.
he says
1. EZ Drummer easy setup and playing.
2. Drum Core Professionals use it. tiny program, quick loads, tones of acoustic samples played by pros
3. Addictive Drums drums load fast. Sound Clean. Fantastic sound without mixing. Control of room sounds.
4. SuperiorDrummer2.0. Killer mixer. multiple outputs. Drums finished sounding. Creative control. Flexible. Use EZ Drummer within it. At least 2gb ram.
5. BFD 2."mature", Midi Mapping easy. mixer is impressive. A lot of drum sets. "I use BFD 2"

Simplicity, musicality and sound are the most important elements.
Had all these drum software packages demostrated to me.
Hands down most impressive package was Addictive Drums.
Drums sound sweet, interface is beautiful and easy, no hickups and sounds load fast.

Thanks a lot

i dont know if i made my self clear its kinda hard for me to use this tecnical lenguage in english.

@MikeyVPT Yeah man, trying to get into making music can be REALLY frustrating sometimes. Thanks.

Mike, I like your style. I've been wanting to get back into drumming, again and had a question. I'd like to start a jazz method so my style is at least jazz influenced since i'll never be a legit jazz player and wondered if you have suggestions for methods. I hear Peter Erkstine's method is good. Any thoughts?

jesus.. write up a list in the discription, 1-5 so we dont have to hear crap like mj madonna etc..-.-
allbutnatural 2 years ago
@allbutnatural : You must be the biggest knuckle head to say "crap like mj madonna". MJ & Madonna have had some of the best drummers playing on studio stuff and live performances.
I was very amazed at the control and quality of Jonathan Moffett, especially his cymbal control. Most drummers will hit their cymbals live and just let them ring every single time; Jonathan seems to understand and takes the time to accentuate pieces of a song by truly controlling the cymbals/drums when playing live.

Hey, i was wondering if you could help me?
What would you suggest as the best software for creating fast paced punk/hardcore drum tracks but without using any sort of midi input to control it? i.e. just manually programming the drum tracks but getting a real sound and having the option of alot of different kit makes/sounds?
Thanks
sparks18190 2 years ago
I would go with EZdrummer's Drums From Hell, or SD2.0 Metal Foundry, or Addictive Drums.
Those would make your tracks Awesome!

MikeyVPT 2 years ago
@MikeyVPT
Man, i've used EZ Drummer DFH to record some Death Metal songs, well the sound is not bad..but it's WEAK!!! and what i mean by weak that even rising us the drums volume cannot do any good, i can barely hear the snare or the kick drum, i thought of equalizing it but no improvement, so Is it the software is not good enough for extreme heavy music?
mukadars 2 years ago
Hey Mikey, great work on all your videos!

Has anyone ever tried this, is it a good idea?
SuperfuryanimaL01 2 years ago
I've tried this! Check out my other videos. OF COURSE it's a great idea ;-)
It's just a great way of getting awesome sounds every time. Instead of setting up an acoustic kit, or wasting time with older module sounds.

i like both AD and EZdrummer, AD has a wider range of setting the sound of all componets which Ezdrummer has not but ezdrummer has a clear tone and a lot of patterns. I use them for techical death metal so it is very important fot me that the overall sound has to be clear and. Addictive drums in the other hand is quite muddy
mkvssf 2 years ago
Nice info Mikey. For me, BFD2 and SD2 is enough. Cause they both is the biggest and the most advanced.
Do you play Ocean Way Drums? Very nice stuff too.

Thanks for putting it up! I wish all review videos were like this!
Might give Addictive a whirl (have been using EZ up until now)

Thanks a bunch! If you like EZDrummer then you'll love Addictive Drums! I use them both a lot, but for different reasons.
EZD has more expansions which are AMAZING, and AD has more presets and drums onboard the initial pack. Both sound great!

thanks for this video. great insight on each of these. quick question: which would you choose as the best sounding? i.e., what sounds most like real drums? thanks!
BrendanWhelan 2 years ago
Great question!
I would appreciate it if you purchased any of this software at VirtualPercussionOutlet(.com) That's my site!

do you no how to link an alesis dm5 pro to a pc with addictive drums
freestylefilmsinc 2 years ago
Make sense?

you said you use ezdrummer for practice? does it mean that it's not a good software?
I don't know anything about drums, i am a guitar player, i don't know how to play drums or anything about them? which software do you think is best for me to add drums to my songs?
aryaxt 2 years ago
I use EZD more for practice and quick recording, only because I use Superior Drummer 2.0 for more of my in depth projects. EZD is GREAT sounding, just like SD2, but it doesn't have all of the on board control like SD2. You can still use all the great sounds from the EZX packs in SD2, also.
I think the best if you're looking for easy would be Addictive Drums (check my channel for an AD video), but if you're looking for deep sounds, go for SD2!

hey mikey im new at recording and such. i have a yamaha dtxplorer and im looking to record and also get new sounds for the kit, i was looking at addictive drums but im not sure if i need an audio interface first or if AD comes with all the inputs and outputs so that my kit plugs into my computer easily please help
rawfflecakes 2 years ago
Otherwise- if, like me, you eventually replace all your sequence with a real drummer, just use the kits that come with your DAW. Honestly. These products require real effort to make them sound real. And hip hop producers!: elsewhere peeps. Elsewhere. trust me. there's probably a dude on CL that'll sell you his vinyl grabs for less.
motherbrain2000 2 years ago
no matter what- the most important part of the equation is the performance itself. these are ALL high end libraries with GEORGOUSLY recorded samples. If all you ever do is program in a quantized beat they are ALL gonna sound like a CASIO's auto-accompany shit. If you pay the money for any of these you either better have a drummer that performs it on a micdi kit or REALLY understand groove quantize.
motherbrain2000 2 years ago
Good points. I'm not the best drummer, but I love having a human touch to my projects. The RET kits are the best hands down to trigger software.
