Absolutely gutted he died. I have read every book he has written and must have seen practically every debate and interview he has ever done..I have learned so much through him not just about what he knows but about how to argue and debate with people and that it is healthy rewarding and fun...

@vernontap then you should know that there are things you should learn for yourself, rather then to listen to someone else's belief system and the perspective of life. I think that Hitchens would be more pleased if you stated you have learnt to think for yourself and to question the things. Speaking of his viewpoint - that should be question too =)

Buddha was not born a virgin? Religion is made up, and often the founding stories of these religions are changed overtime, or there are multiple versions of the same stories. Buddha was born a virgin/wasn't born a virgin; I'm sure both stories are available and taken by followers to be true. Like Islam, Buddhism can appear to have an enticing philosophy, but dig a little deeper, learn about the hells in buddhism, learn about its sexist dogma and you'll find the corruption of man is at its heart

@NeverAloneForever The question is not "born a virgin" but rather "born OF a virgin" i.e. an immaculate conception. The correlation between virginity and divinity has resulted in a systematic aversion to the female sex. Instead of embracing that which actually gives life; i.e. the female biological reproductive system, as the source of life, claim instead that divine creatures preceded any vaginal contact, so as to refute any possible connection between the female sex and the divinity of life.

He debated so eloquently, factual evidence against simplistic conjecture and fallacy, with such individualistic dynamic charisma, like no other individual, of our day and age could ever have attempted to do. He was a man of tremendous foresight and vision. His genius has given us the freedom to break the shakels of theistic belief once and for all.

It would would seem to me that the virgin birth is present in various religions because the baby 'god' incarnate would need to be entirely separated from the act of a common man inserting his penis the old fashioned way, and clearly from some type of divine implantation. So, I think this is a more obvious explanation than what Hitchens describes here.

Religion's original treatment of women is one of the major reasons that I began to doubt in the first place. If God really loves me, why would he treat women like that and expect his sons to treat us like that? Hitchens will be missed.

@Al1981X Yep, Hitchens and Dawkins are legends of our time. Amazing intellectuals. While I agree and fascinated by their discourses, thing he said about the Buddha seems to be not valid. I am in the process of studying Theravada Buddhism (which is only about the lectures/sermons by Buddha etc), and anybody who are fascinated by logics of Dawkins will most probably will get attracted to Buddhas logics. Buddha was born to a queen, and nowhere it is mentioned she was a virgin, not that...

@MimicaXresurrected Well, that's a damned shame but all is not lost. Christopher Hitchens will live on through his books and the world wide web. So, be thankful you at least have heard of him now. You're in for many wonderful moments when you read his words, or listen to him speak. He held strong feminist views that give me much hope that things can get better for women. How long this will take is anyone's guess.
