Where in these bills does it say anything about seeds even remotely? I read them twice and they are primarily about meats, dairy and transportation. The price for bread has been especially noticeable, its dropped from 4.89 (I buy the good hearty multitasking kind) to 3.29 for the same loaf, I don't think the bread prices are being manipulated, (I think that's true for canned goods - which all seemed to be selling for $1.50 a can wherever you go and same for gas which are fixed at $1.85) I think they oversupplied, people around where I live in the Shenandoah Valley, I hear the dairy farmers especially are getting hit hard.
Where did you get the notion that food in Mexico and Canada is sold into the U.S.? It's the other way around, actually the U.S. is probably about the largest agricultural producer in the world. The problem is we have subsidized crops and have exported them so cheaply that Mexican farmers have in a large part gone bankrupt and forced to emigrate to the U.S. to get a job. At least that was true 3 years ago when I wrote on the problem.

Having read the text of both the house and senate bills, I can't say that it is particularly sinister. I can say that is not economically sensible, nor is it fully enforceable (like laws on communicating the source and content of imported and distributed herbal products.) As written it is a pretty universal restraint, but both are rather vague. Be more concerned with how enforcement is handled, and what is defined as best practice. The trick is in the definition of a 'Food Production Facility' - "means any farm, ranch, orchard, vineyard, aquaculture facility, or confined animal-feeding operation." ANY.
This means that anyone who is a "food producer" must meet ALL requirements set down by the new "Food Safety Administration" - part of the Dept of Health.
It IS about food safety, as they define food and safety. There are tons of regulations, including the use of 'safe' seeds, fertilizer, etc

Well, it wouldn't apply to simple allotment gardens I suppose. I think the new rules are there to set standards for food that is going to be on the market...Just recently I bought a whole lot of different seeds. Unfortunately I'm still on the waitinglist for an allotment...
And finally if the concern is that conventional seeds/plants are to be patented thus restricting their usage, then surely the solution is for concerned groups to pool together their resources to have these items patented on "for public use" terms.

Where in these bills does it say anything about seeds even remotely? I read them twice and they are primarily about meats, dairy and transportation. I know americas new Agriculture is just waiting to bend over for Monsanto but crying wolf early and posting links to people reviewing a bill they never read and lied about things in said bill makes us discredited as loonies when it does happen. Sorry you feel that way. I would suggest rereading it again. Yes, the bill is written in vagueness, which leaves alot more room for "interpretation" from government later on once its passed. I'm not paranoid just cautious and untrusting of whats going on with the US in general.

Rice however has been in diminishing supply (at my local supermarket anyway) I think this is due to people like me who buy it because they are worried something bad might happen, like a revolution I think.
I just went today and spent $87.32 on food which is a good supply for about 2 months I'd say for one person eating rationed meals.
I bought that because for the first time, I saw an armored convoy going down the street - at least 3 armored Humvees and 2 armored personnel carriers.

Harrisonburg Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley, people are pretty aware of the increasing military activity, it started about 4 months ago, but the activity has really started to accelerate recently. I think it's more of a preemptive measure, to maintain order in an atmosphere of high unemployment.

The price for bread has been especially noticeable, its dropped from 4.89 (I buy the good hearty multitasking kind) to 3.29 for the same loaf, I don't think the bread prices are being manipulated, (I think that's true for canned goods - which all seemed to be selling for $1.50 a can wherever you go and same for gas which are fixed at $1.85) I think they oversupplied, people around where I live in the Shenandoah Valley, I hear the dairy farmers especially are getting hit hard.

I think you are wrong.
Where did you get the notion that food in Mexico and Canada is sold into the U.S.? It's the other way around, actually the U.S. is probably about the largest agricultural producer in the world. The problem is we have subsidized crops and have exported them so cheaply that Mexican farmers have in a large part gone bankrupt and forced to emigrate to the U.S. to get a job. At least that was true 3 years ago when I wrote on the problem.

Actually I'd say now the problem is we have far too much food, when I go to the store its stocked with food. (except for maybe rice) last year though I would have agreed with you, (because of the increasing uses for ethanol and high shipping costs do to gas prices) but I think we are at least a year or two before the U.S. starts to see mild shortages (in localities),

Having read the text of both the house and senate bills, I can't say that it is particularly sinister. I can say that is not economically sensible, nor is it fully enforceable (like laws on communicating the source and content of imported and distributed herbal products.) As written it is a pretty universal restraint, but both are rather vague. Be more concerned with how enforcement is handled, and what is defined as best practice. The good news is, GM could, one day, be in the bad list.

I skimmed through those bills and seen nothing regarding organic gardening. It seems to me it has more to do with food safety. They are just adding more government to an already bloated government. I don't see how the tax payers can afford the FDA and another food safety administration combined.

The trick is in the definition of a 'Food Production Facility' - "means any farm, ranch, orchard, vineyard, aquaculture facility, or confined animal-feeding operation." ANY.
This means that anyone who is a "food producer" must meet ALL requirements set down by the new "Food Safety Administration" - part of the Dept of Health.
It IS about food safety, as they define food and safety. There are tons of regulations, including the use of 'safe' seeds, fertilizer, etc

"they" also just did it to herbal/botanical "supplement" industry. There is a combination of strong public support (partially manufactured by greatly exaggerated risk, which is the case for food, toys, and herbs) and big money keeping competition out of a market as well as giving more power over a situation to the fed for various conflicted reasons. People who vote also want government solving their problems, not a lot of people are rushing to vote government away, just to their side.

Actually, the core of the issue is the possibility of poisoning when food is given/traded. Therefore an understanding move, especially in the US with the disparity between the communauties in terms of land distribution and the past: one communauty could as well use its monopoly on land to poison another communauty with little capability of growing food. As it was done with the Indians and the blanket distribution.

We're seeing more & more stories here in the US of entire families completing murder/suicide pacts b/c of their financial situations, or lack thereof. In Australia, a father dropped his 3 yr old dtr off a suspension bridge while drivers going by watched. She was rescued only 2 die due 2 internal hemorrhaging later at hospital. Many of these stories aren't being reported or aren't being connected 2 the economy.

There are some great projects to save seed varieties-support the Henry Doubleday association based in Coventry UK who save many old varieties and buy bio dynamic seeds as I do from Stormy Hall in Botton Village UK or very available with a click here in Germany. Also learn about seed saving. Monsanto is not to underestimate they are dangerous and want to own all food. Fight them.

Yes, I plan to do what JDouglasFisher wants and to contact my representatives to say I don't want that bill to go any further. I plan to grow my own food and what, they would not allow me to feed my family who didn't pitch in in the garden or to help out my community? No good. I regret I have not bought heirloom seeds yet, I must also do this. Good posting, Mike.
