Well-played Haydn is a timeless glory. Sadly, while there are innumerable proficiently-played Haydn performances and recordings about, only a small number combine proficiency with intelligent and adventurous musicianship. After hearing so many "big-name" quartets (period, modern, doesn't matter) play Haydn with perfect tone and ensemble, but all the musical subtlety of an assemblage of Tinkertoys, it's delightful to encounter such superb performances as the Jasper's (see also their Op. 76/5).
This recording by far surpassed all my expectations. The quality of this quartet is most impressive - expressing difficult passages with apparent ease and sound so mellifluous it was as if there was one instrument playing. I'd have to say the violist, Sam Quintal, deserves some major kudos...what a controlled and resonant sound you have. Overall the quartet compliments each other extraordinarily well, most notably the articulation of cadences and phrases. Well done.
