Great song. I just don't know how they came out with so many great songs. Hell, most bands come out with five to ten albums and you're lucky to get a two or three albums that are great. Chicago is so talented and prolific, they aren't only coming out with more great songs than any band but so many they have to keep putting out double albums. Amazing.
One of the marks of a great band is being able to recognize that band within seconds of hearing one of their songs. Such is the case with Chicago. If you didn't buy their full albums, you've missed out on some truly GREAT music. Thier "radio hits" were NOT their only good songs. In their prime, these guys were masters of their craft.
I love this song for so many years that I hardly believe it's true.
I first heared it in 1977 or 1978 on the wired radio in St. Petersburg, Russia. The broadcast went without much information, not even album title was given, just the perfomer and the song name (in Russian): "Ещё один дождливый день в Нью-Йорк Сити". And it took years for me to determine and to buy "Chicago X" here. :o)
The biggest selling American band in history is Aerosmith. with approx. 150 million records sold. Chicago has 122 million sold. The beach boys have sold over 100 million records.
Chicago hit #32 in Billboard, 8-7-86. Is Lee Loughnane on flugelhorn here? It sure sounds like it, as opposed to trumpet. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!
This is the original version. Pete's voice is so nicely audible. Cheers! Takes us back to the time when the group reigned the pop charts. This song was released as a single just before "if you leave me now".Great masterpiece.
Always loved this song & particularly the acoustic version Lamm did w/ Pankow in concert several years back. That was the inspirtation for recording my own version of the tune. Many thanks for posting!
I haven't heard this forever either - thanks for posting it! Came out as a single in UK in the summer of 1976... which was so hot and dry we almost forgot what a rainy day felt like.
@loocee95 I am obviously not a native English speaker so could you tell me why one may consider this song racist? Because of "city workers cheer"? Or because "rainy" could mean "black"?
Absolutely sublime.

@DaveWollenberg Sorry to keep correcting you, but it came out in 1976, not 1986. If You Leave Me Now was their follow up hit.
