Wonderful....when she soars up to E-flat....amazing!!
Oh..and by the Way "josephlemon": Gruberova was,is and will always be a Phenomenon. The Audience goes crazy when she sings. But you as an experienced 21 Year old "Opera Singer" who knows all about Bel Canto-let me tell you--she`s still laughing all the Way to the Bank. Addio del passato.....
you stated, that you are an opera singer, too. would you please post a video of yourself, to demonstrate what your understanding of real bel canto singing is. as a pianist, with a special love for chopin, i would like to know. thank you so much!!!
i have no idea why Edita Gruberova has a career. i've tried listening to her several times. her choices in style are combo of bad Renee Fleming staccati and breathy vocal musings. I'm always baffled by what she gets away with. From Norma, to this, to her Amina, to Roberto Devereux. It's just so horrible.
Gruberova has a special voice. Many people loves her voice. Others laike you don't. Did you ever saw Gruberova live? I saw her in Roberto Devereux and Lucia de Lammermoor. I was comletely amazed by the end of the performances.
Well sung. My only complaint with her as a singer is her need to SCOOP and SLIDE up to higher notes. It just gives her otherwise wonderful performance a very sloppy sound, like she really can't get those notes any other way (which we know is not true).
no not sloopy sound, stylish sound. I don't like when sopranos hit the highest notes without at least an attempt to sing it as legato. That's why I love edita's work.
yes, sloppy sound. this isn't legato singing. listen to Annick Massis, Roberta Peters, LAURA CLAYCOMB, MARIA CALLAS, anyone but Gruberova to show you true bel canto singing. Especially the meaning of style concerning the bel canto repertoire.
comparing callas and gruberova? two absolutely different voices and personalities? what an amateurish approach. I think gruberova fully understood the bel canto "idiom" and does nothing wrong. if you don't like her, don't listen to her;) it's simple.
i never compared Callas and Gruberova. There is no comparison to Callas, and if anything you are amateurish for believing her approach to the music is acceptable. her coloratura is choppy, her phrasing is horrible. there's a certain acidic after taste that her tone causes. bel canto is bel canto, and that means legato singing first. Gruberova has always ignored this. certainly not my fault if that's just the way she sings. i have the right to disagree with her interpretation.
you are absolutely ignoring the facts. If she had bad phrasing, the critics would have destryed her. If her coloratura was her choppy, she wouldn't sing Zerbinetta the way she did(not only zerbinetta). and now myquestions: where exactly do you think her phrasing is horrible? and whydo you say so? and how can you say gruberova has no legato singing? do u have ears, or you just read one new word in the dictionary and have need to use it?
there are several critics who have harshly bashed her approach to several roles.especially the italian repertoire. her phrasing is horrible because of the choppy quality. she doesn't sing with pure vowels, which causes her to place her tone in all sorts of weird ways. the underlying quality of her voice is acidic, which becomes very apparent in her attempt at bel canto.
there are several critics who've said gruberova surpassed callas and sutherland in some italian repertoire. choppy sound? where?? omg. you didn't even answer my questions.. btw I have different opinion on what belcanto is. belcanto = legato singing?:D:D haha, go read some books. and poor boy, don't embarrass yourself here..:(
you're obviously an idiot, a musically incompetent opera homo. i did answer your questions but it wasn't what you wanted to hear. you opinion of what belcano is doesn't matter. YOU go do some research and get back to me. there are 3 principles of bel canto singing, legato phrasing is one of them. Gruberova will NEVER match Sutherland or Callas. she is horrible in all italian repertoire.
again, anamateurish approach. gruberova cannot be compared to callas, they have different voices, different style and different personalities. again, the fact you don't like her doesn't make her any worse. again: if you don't like her, don't listen to her, but please, don't call me a musically incompetent opera homo:) I think I've studied chopin's music and bellini's music enough to criticize opera singers and pianist, so I don't need to do a research.
also, list to me these critics who've said that Gruberova surpassed Callas and Sutherland. I can list to you those who have criticized her "interpretations" of bel canto.
I don't care about this, you can list whatever you want to. I don't need opera critics to determine my style! if you want to find out who these critics were, read the book aboutgruberova.
haha, why would i waste my time on a singer who i don't agree with? i'm also an opera singer. and i have been taught, and base my vocal production on bel canto principles. even if artists have different styles, there must be a underlying sense of style and relevance to the composers music. she scoops and slops around far too much for me.
you're wasting time on a singer you don't agree with right NOW. again if you don't like her, don't listen to her. nobody forces you to do so. if you cannot see the "underlying sence of style and relevance to the composers music" in gruberova's singing, there's nothing much to say. I see all this stuff you mentioned and not only that.
I have to admit, Gruberova is in fine voice here! If you compair this with the same music in her Barcelona 2001 performance, her top is much more secure. Brava to La Gruberova!
Povera Gruberova, E' l' ombra di quello che era nel 1980. Ascoltare la stessa aria nella edizione dei Puritani di Bregenz !

@DiegoMartinazzoli not Sutherland...they are different in different ways...but definitely Callas :D

2:53 should be the definition of pianissimi. Her entire performance was tremendous though.
