Jerry Goldsmith is the greatest film composer of all time. When you look at all the films he scored and listen to the original theme for each film, the music is amazing.
In my opinion The Omen is his best soundtrack for which he won his only Academy Award. Terrifying and beautiful at the same time. It takes alot of skill to do that.
@SideSwipeGTA Many of his scores should have won Best Original Score, not just The Omen and Star Trek the motion picture. I didn't say only The Omen deserved it.
Gerry has a talent for painting a picture with an orchestra that meshes perfectly with what is onscreen. Now there are many composers that can do this but Gerry's genius is that he can do so in such a way that the score makes sense even in isolation.
He's up there with orchestral composers such as Bach, Beethoven and Mozart in my book.
Lovely selection from the master. The films Jerry worked on were elevated to a whole new level, thanks to his great talent. Where is the film composer today who could come close to this artistry?
@Deathlimbo87 ennio is great too but i didn't appreciate him until later. i'm just saying goldsmith was probably the main reason i even pay attention to film music. i discovered guys like ennio and lalo schifrin after goldsmith had already opened that door to me. don't get me wrong, morricone is a true innovator.
great stuff, while music doesn't make a movie great a good score with a good movie can really put a movie over the top and Mr Goldsmith proved that over the years many times.
@NewZealandAri why do you feel the need to say that. Nobody has said anything bad. Also I see all accomplishments as individual triumphs not triumphs for an entire group. Your Diest friend:-)
The man did make some great OST. I love how his music changes from film to film. nothing sounding alike thats what made him great. Also Star Trek Voyager Theme was awesome too.
Along with Bernard Herrmann and Ennio Morricone, the greatest three film composers. His range was astounding, from the experimental "Planet of the Apes" to the fanfare from "Star Trek Voyager" to the low-key "Hombre", an endless list.
Helluva compilation. Goldsmith was a musical chameleon, never allowing his own ego to get in the way of the cinematic art he was supporting.
But he was a chameleon who could go from plaid to paisley to polka dots without hesitation or error. Nobody has yet equaled him in range and striking power.
i was not impressed by all of these but jerry gold smith does not make much good music any way the only really good song he has ever done in mulan short hair but sry jerry goldsmith but hanns zimmer is way better hate to brak it to you but its true hanns zimmer is way better then jerry gold smith
Hans Zimmer is the king of GENERIC scores, nobody will remember in a few years after the novelty value of the blockbuster movies he scored, has worn off.
There's no finesse or variety to Zimmer's scores. They are the epitome of bland.
@Wizard101Rocks987 Hans Zimmer is not very original and his scores sounds all the same and repetitive. Jerry Goldsmith's scores are so unique, so exciting and so different that he truly was a musical chameleon. And you cannot judge the man's greatness just from this meager compilation. Jerry Goldsmith has more than 50 years and more than 200 film and television credits in his name. He's got more beautiful and awesome scores out there.
goldsmith's music was so different for every film. amazing and always fresh. alfred newman, john williams, stiener, rozsa, and alex north had a style that was a recognizable signature for each composer. but goldsmith's music sounded like he was a different composer for each film. my favorites: PATTON, FIRST KNIGHT. the expanded score for POLTERGIET is breathtaking.
Goldsmith has so many good scores, it's hard to narrow it down. Breaking it down by category... Fantasy: "Legend" "The Secret of NIMH" (this score was performed with no electronics) "Supergirl" Sci-Fi: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" "Total Recall" (one of Goldsmith's personal favorites) "Logan's Run" Comedy: "The 'Burbs" "Innerspace" Ugh. I just can't select, there were too many from Goldsmith that were great to me. Even scores like "Runaway" were awesome.
Mr.Baseball... Joke. No, my favorite is Planet of the Apes ('68), for which he was nominated for an Oscar. The Oscar winner was The Omen. Papillon not included?
The way I see it, if you make a list of the 3 best movie scorers of all time you just have to include Jerry Goldsmith. The amount of quality work is unsurpassed.
It's a pity that films don't have overtures anymore, like in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." It's not the main theme I'm talking about, but the very beginning of the film, before the opening credits, where all you see is travel between the stars and all you hear is Jerry Goldsmith's music.
I couldn't get over the idea of Al Pacino playing the part of John Rambo. It's my guess it would've been a one time only role considering that in the book, (which I never read) he dies. It's like when Cary Grant had the shot of playing 007. I think I'd go mad thinking about such things. Great music, by the way.

@Poops4all The movie was intended to cash in on the Indy phenomenon... as usual, Williams for Indy - Goldsmith got King Solomon's Mines... Williams got Superman, Goldsmith got Supergirl. Story of his life... Impeccable score though. :)
@speedporn Richard Donner almost went with Jerry for Superman, but a scheduling conflict prevented it from happening. I think it may have sounded more like Supergirl had he gone and done it. Still, I can't picture anyone but John Williams doing the music for the Superman movies. Both are legends!!

@TheGoldcountry. I agree. Instead of comparing Goldsmith and Williams, we should be grateful that we had both (and several other great composers during the same period). I do think that Williams became a victim of his own success and was expected to keep writing in a similar style. Even Goldsmith's versitility couldn't prevent him from scoring so many thrillers, SF and action films during the 1980's. Like Bernstein, he had to seek out quirky films to prevent complete typecasting.
perhaps you must hate John Williams, but for the way you edited this or Morricone´s work and other they sounds better. Or may be i m ust acept Goldsmith have more fanfarre and pompous themes! (?)
You should have used the Universal Logo in the intro the way you used Twentieth Century Fox Fanfare for the "Alfred Newman - Greatest Hits" or the Warner Bros. Fanfare that you used in the intro for "Max Steiner - Greatest Hits". Jerry Goldsmith's Universal Logo is one of my favorite fanfares ever.
please, James Horner copies his own scores from his old movies. in his scores you can hear cues from his former ones. not saying that other composers don't have it but in his it is pretty obvious even to the average movie audience
No Sand Pebbles? No In Harm's Way? Still, a good sampling of Jerry's great orchestrations and mood development......he experimented, quite successfully, with instruments that were not the status quo, and had cultural sensitivity that went beyond other composers. He is a role model for many contemporaries and those to come.

I think its worth nothing that the music here is actually from Gremlins 2.
The first Gremlins had the main theme, but had a shrill, almost electronic sound to it.
Gremlins 2 took the basic theme, but gave it a big band swing sound with a lot more emphasis on brass and drums.

Would say either he or Horner is the # 1 modern classical composer in my opinion, I mean the man's a true legend.

@loganachilles1982
please, James Horner copies his own scores from his old movies. in his scores you can hear cues from his former ones. not saying that other composers don't have it but in his it is pretty obvious even to the average movie audience
scoring blockbusters doesn't equal quality automatically

No Russia House left me with a chill. I heard it said that after listening to your choices, Jerry is considering rising from his grave to add it.

In my opinion, the music opening "The Boys From Brazil" is as good as some great classical music I've heard.

I realise you can't include all Jerry Goldsmith's movies, but you have left out my top 2: The Sand Pebbles (1966), The Russia House (1990)!!
