I love the Civ games. Especially II and IV.

Even when they get easy, they're still fun, because there are so many different ways you can develop your civ (especially in Civ IV - I'm always changing the victory conditions to make it different).

I get progressively worse with each incarnation of the game. I think its due to developing bad habits that don't make sense with new game mechanics.

I've developed quite a lazy play style. Its almost like I'm RP'ing the role of civ leader, rather than thinking about how to abuse the mechanics.

The original was the only one I devoted myself to and tried to improve with.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. Games are about experiences, and "I'll make a really nice land for my people, yay!" compares well to "I've skillfully manipulated the game mechanics to cause a 25% research speed increase, yay!" I've noticed that kids telling little stories to themselves about the gameplay probably have a healthier attitude than those who enjoy the game provided they're winning.

Then barbarians swarm over your borders and kill everyone, so skill has its place.

You do not need taxes in the beginning as you have no buildings and no costs (despotism). Turn that to 0 percent to focus on knowledge. My tactic is to quickly spread. By 2000 BC, I usually have 10 cities. If I have neighbors, I build some catapults and chariots and kill them. I only build barracks and granary to keep the costs very low. When my inland is full, I start to develop the cities and prepare for invasion, switch to monarchy and so on...

I still play this game. I do about 1 sequence per month on the hardest setting. :) Last time I finished the plot around 1900 with spaceship, population around 100 million, 1 opponent remaining with 1 city, of course.

I, for one, welcome the greatness of the early Civilization games, differing opinions on the largely irrelevant beginning of the world and all, and will even tolerate the seed theory silliness of Spore. The game itself, after all, is far more important than the trappings, and the name of the game is... CIVILIZATION!

Though Spore is lacking in the game department as well, but that's an issue for another day.
