You need character customization, ground designs, new animations, new skills, etc..... By the time EVE gets ground (which will probably be only a couple maps), STO will have gotten season 7 out and the game will be 20 times better then it was.

Yes...the first idea was to have your crew (real players) on one ship, with each assignment for himself. Now it's EVE online 2...with retard ship controls.
I guess it makes sense that it can't be as star-trek like as some fans would want it to be, as it's an RPG in which you make your own character. It's just a game set in the Star Trek universe, rather than a game where you play out events in the series or movies.
So far Im impressed. Unlike Eve ( don't get me wrong I loved Eve, this game is just different) STO has different dynamics. The death penalty isn't painful and positioning your ship is more crucial for battles than Eve which relies on strength (weapons capabilities, range etc) You have to research the game and learn about skills, equipment and tweaking your landing party. Ill still play WOW but STO will be a nice change and different platform.
Can someone please reply tome. I'm only 13 and have never really played an mmo before but I'm a hugestar trek fan and want to play this. Do you just need a regestered copy of the game and an acount on the cryptic site to play, and will it only start costing me when the game comes out and I'm signed in? Also, you don't have to joina fleet and can go solo?

@karkrashinc You need a registered copy of the game and if it's like any other mmo you'll load up the software and it will add an icon to your desktop. While loading it will ask for billing information and you'll be billed $15 a month to play (it doesn't matter how long you play online it'll still be $15 charge from Cryptic). From what I gather you can play by yourself but you might be limited in the sort of things you can do and missions you can take on.
EVE is a great game, ST:O might be as well. With the skill book based style of progression in EVE the two games wouldn't really even compete for time, you could advance in both. That's not too cheap though, but still, I think they both have a lot to offer a sci-fi gamer.

by using tactics like, attacking the impuls engine to get the enemy less manuverable, and than attack from blind spots where the enemy has no weapons to reach you, on an warbird this would be most likely from behind, as warbirds have most of their weapon systems pointing forward
@Polskmofo boarding parties disable and sabatoge the enemy ship sometimes the egine fails or weapons maybe shields but theres defenses against boarding parties.

Actually, it won't. They aren't dumb, they're just educated. Cryptic is more focused on Windows and XBox. Infact, they're so focused on XBox that the engine they're using can use gamepads on Windows, but only XBox 360 gamepads. Any other gamepad gets completely ignored by the game's player input system. Sure, there's no real technical reason they couldn't port it to PS3, but I seriously doubt they will. There's no profit in it. Face it, more people own Macs than own PS3. That's just sad.

It's easy to be rude to words, not so easy face to face. Now... Cryptic has expressed no desire in PS3. They've only expressed desire in Windows and XBox. They spent a lot of energy converting from OpenGL to DirectX. I doubt they want to spend the energy to go back to OpenGL just for a few PS3 fans.

first off.. no. The control factor might somewhat mimic most games through the past few decades, but overall its not wow you reject.
Also, wow was and still is popular because of its freedom and ease of use, coupled with insane content. I no longer play because 5 years = bored. But overall wow is, was, and will continue to be the top mmo. I wish better ones would come out because I have nothing to play. blah.

It looks like the graphics need some improvement, but overall the game is insanely smooth and very controllable. Wish I could say the same for eve. You pick a location, set on auto pilot and come back in 4 hours. Wow such fun.
It looks awesome, but that's the problem for me, I don't have the money to get the newest hardware. All I can do is hope for low setting for the graphics. Don't get me wrong, the game looks really nice, I just hope it doesn't try to be all looks and no fun.
All these ppl saying gameplay this, and landing that... if I'm being completely honest, this could be the most stupid game I've ever seen and I'd still play it because it's Star Trek. So many ppl criticize "Trekkies" that I'm just glad that there'll be a place where we can all gather and have fun without having to fly miles to a convention.

What makes you think this game is being shoved out the door before it's finished? Cryptic already had their Champions engine to get a head start for STO. If you actually look at the STO website, you can see the amount work and love that was put into the game. The game looks pretty good now, and it has plenty of time in the beta stage to fix any problems.

The Game as every feature you can think of, ground exploration, ground fighting, etc. The only thing STO doesn't have currently, is the ability to move/walk throughout your ship, and the ability to beam other players to your ship. They have said, they will include those some time after when its not just a bullet point on the box. People who say it will Fail are WoW Fanboys that couldnt play AoC or WH because "they arent the WoW Killers".. Fail Troll is Fail.

eve is about the fakest crap ever. Planets are basically just PICTURES in space (sometimes you can see right through them), there is NO gravity, NOTHING orbits anything else. You can't even land on planets, or even walk around in your own ship! I love space, but not EVE's horrible representation of it.
1. Yeah, eventually you get tired of living as a SHIP.
2. Stations always stay in the same place around a planet, they should be orbiting in at least a geo-synchronous orbit. They do not MOVE, hence gravity is NOT realistic.
3. I have been able to make more than half a planet disappear on more than 1 computer. They are pictures.
4. You can land and stay in your ship! Check out Infinity: quest for earth. You can explore the surface of planets and fly over it like a plane. Looks promising.

Getting through the atmosphere is no problem at all, keeping yourself in the air is the challenge. It would make controls much more annoying and space-fail-shooter like. Your ship would have to have wings, essentially, and on top of that, so few ships are actually small enough to be able to sustain their own weight in the very first place.
No way, keeping yourself in the air is no problem at all, seeing as how planets in EVE don't have gravity that even pulls your ship towards it lol. So basically, you'd be able to stay in the air constantly, even "large" ships, because there'd be no gravity, even at low altitude! problem solved. EVE's just too lazy to make ground graphics, which is ashame, because I'd be playing EVE if you could land on planets and explore the cities etc! Would be awesome. But that's what star trek online is for!
You're right. What space game needs surface exploration! I mean, star wars could have gone perfectly without landing on planets! But hey, too each his own! I defintely prefer space AND ground exploration.
LOL. a Space MMO with no gravity or ground exploration is like a First Person Shooter without guns. Pointless. I couldn't stand EVE after 3 months. the graphics are nice. But that's the only thing that is. I'm a physics major, so I'm sorry if I can't stand all that unrealistic gameplay. It's completely annoying, unplayable, actually. Point and clicking in space is so boring. But like I said, to each his own! Good luck with EVE.
I hope they make the ground combat a little smoother though, it looked kind of chunky. But the space combat is amazing! They probably should also fix the sizes of ships, though, because those Birds of Preys shouldn't be the same size as that Excelsior class.
its hard to tell but isnt that a constitution? Excelsiors are more of a longer rounder design, in this game you can modify your ships too it looks like he moded up constatution to me... i could be wrong i guess though

the gameplay looks alot like ST Legacy to mee, phasers to drain the shields, torpedos to finish the enemy off,
i would like to see the gameplay like bridge commander, attacking the subsytems...etc.
because then not only the experience of your character would be important, also yourown experience and tactics would make a difference.
i really wouldove to see an mmo where you own talent is as (or even more) important than the talent of the character.

LOL Internet Argument. I could respond to your insult with more insults; but unlike some people, I try to treat them on the internet as I would if I were face to face. It's easy to be rude to words, not so easy face to face. Now... Cryptic has expressed no desire in PS3. They've only expressed desire in Windows and XBox. They spent a lot of energy converting from OpenGL to DirectX. I doubt they want to spend the energy to go back to OpenGL just for a few PS3 fans.

first off.. no. The control factor might somewhat mimic most games through the past few decades, but overall its not wow you reject.
Also, wow was and still is popular because of its freedom and ease of use, coupled with insane content. I no longer play because 5 years = bored. But overall wow is, was, and will continue to be the top mmo. I wish better ones would come out because I have nothing to play. blah.

It looks like the graphics need some improvement, but overall the game is insanely smooth and very controllable. Wish I could say the same for eve. You pick a location, set on auto pilot and come back in 4 hours. Wow such fun.

It looks awesome, but that's the problem for me, I don't have the money to get the newest hardware. All I can do is hope for low setting for the graphics. Don't get me wrong, the game looks really nice, I just hope it doesn't try to be all looks and no fun.

All these ppl saying gameplay this, and landing that... if I'm being completely honest, this could be the most stupid game I've ever seen and I'd still play it because it's Star Trek. So many ppl criticize "Trekkies" that I'm just glad that there'll be a place where we can all gather and have fun without having to fly miles to a convention.
I'm also happy about supporting a franchise I want more of =)

Cryptic made the game Atari published CO, now Cryptic made STO and Atari published STO, expect the same lack of effort. Anything published by Atari means one thing, Cryptic couldn't find other anyone else to publish the game. lol

1. Hype game
2. Shove it out door before it's finished
3. Gather profits and actually start to work making the game you envisioned

What makes you think this game is being shoved out the door before it's finished? Cryptic already had their Champions engine to get a head start for STO. If you actually look at the STO website, you can see the amount work and love that was put into the game. The game looks pretty good now, and it has plenty of time in the beta stage to fix any problems.

The game will rock! The Game as every feature you can think of, ground exploration, ground fighting, etc. The only thing STO doesn't have currently, is the ability to move/walk throughout your ship, and the ability to beam other players to your ship. They have said, they will include those some time after when its not just a bullet point on the box. People who say it will Fail are WoW Fanboys that couldnt play AoC or WH because "they arent the WoW Killers".. Fail Troll is Fail.

eve is about the fakest crap ever. Planets are basically just PICTURES in space (sometimes you can see right through them), there is NO gravity, NOTHING orbits anything else. You can't even land on planets, or even walk around in your own ship! I love space, but not EVE's horrible representation of it.

2: Yes, there is gravity. Planets orbit. Slowly. Realisticly.
3: The planets are not a "picture". They are objects with their own models and textures and collision boxes.
4: No, you can't land on planets because the vast majority of them are uninhabitable. Land and die: Sound appealing?

1. Yeah, eventually you get tired of living as a SHIP.
2. Stations always stay in the same place around a planet, they should be orbiting in at least a geo-synchronous orbit. They do not MOVE, hence gravity is NOT realistic.
3. I have been able to make more than half a planet disappear on more than 1 computer. They are pictures.
4. You can land and stay in your ship! Check out Infinity: quest for earth. You can explore the surface of planets and fly over it like a plane. Looks promising.

Okay, in response to #4:
Getting through the atmosphere is no problem at all, keeping yourself in the air is the challenge. It would make controls much more annoying and space-fail-shooter like. Your ship would have to have wings, essentially, and on top of that, so few ships are actually small enough to be able to sustain their own weight in the very first place.

No way, keeping yourself in the air is no problem at all, seeing as how planets in EVE don't have gravity that even pulls your ship towards it lol. So basically, you'd be able to stay in the air constantly, even "large" ships, because there'd be no gravity, even at low altitude! problem solved. EVE's just too lazy to make ground graphics, which is ashame, because I'd be playing EVE if you could land on planets and explore the cities etc! Would be awesome. But that's what star trek online is for!

LOL. a Space MMO with no gravity or ground exploration is like a First Person Shooter without guns. Pointless. I couldn't stand EVE after 3 months. the graphics are nice. But that's the only thing that is. I'm a physics major, so I'm sorry if I can't stand all that unrealistic gameplay. It's completely annoying, unplayable, actually. Point and clicking in space is so boring. But like I said, to each his own! Good luck with EVE.

It is a planet, they are huge. Just change the camera angle to be really close to the ship so the ship looks larger.
It will look like smaller planets "like in the show."

I hope they make the ground combat a little smoother though, it looked kind of chunky. But the space combat is amazing! They probably should also fix the sizes of ships, though, because those Birds of Preys shouldn't be the same size as that Excelsior class.
