@gina72916 WOW.. i love Damian Dame, but the best LaFace act was TLC,hands down! & dont forget about Miss Braxton.. RIP Debra & Bruce<3 Forever misssed;always remembered.
I loved TLC and Toni Braxton; however, all of those women put together could not "out blow" that small framed woman of Damian Dame. She blows the end of "Exclusivity" out of the water!. None of those women have such range. They were such a promising act - such a sad ending for them.
@cchllover toni has two ranges -- a low gravel, and a high gravel. And, when it's time for her to hang on to a note for a long period of time, she seems to struggle, having to break the note up into a scat. I think Toni Braxton (in her hey day) was like many of the young singers of today (except for Jennifer Hudson) -- a mediocre voice, attractive face and banging body. Eye candy with a voice that's not bad, but it won't blow anyone out of the water either.
@gina72916 i dont think so. Toni has incredible range & her vocal ability was in the same league as Whitney, Mariah and Celine. Her low range is so extraordinarily textured that it rivals that of Anita Baker. Her head voice is incredibly strong that it allowed her to sing many "powerhouse ballads" that she has become known for. Songs like Unbreak My Heart, Spanish Guitar, Love Should've Brought You Home, Seven Days etc.. require power, range, and vocal strength in order to deliver such songs.
@gina72916 i dont think so. Toni has incredible range & her vocal ability was in the same league as Whitney, Mariah and Celine. Songs like Unbreak My Heart, Spanish Guitar, Love Should've Brought You Home, Seven Days etc.. require power, range, and vocal strength in order to deliver such songs.
@cchllover anytime Toni Braxton is considered as being in the same category as those multi-range, high octive singers, I say we should truly agree to disagree about the topic.
@gina72916 well i guess u would be disagreeing with the many of credible music critiques who have said the exact same thing I just said. And just to clarify, yes Toni is a Contralto which is why she sings in such lower keys, but that has nothing to do with her vocal quality and vocal strength that is on the same level as those previously named vocalists *her peers*. Toni also has a multi-octave range which has allowed her to record such respected material. But agree to disagree O_o
@cchllover --- " her peers" -- please name me one credible music critique who have made that statement. Celine, Whitney and Mariah can go up and down the music scale without breaking a sweat (whereas, Toni sometime looks like she is struggling to make it through) And, when those women are at the top of the scale, it is almost glass shattering!. Toni was good marketing, but those women have/had staying power (their careers' didn't fizzel after one album).
@gina72916 LMAO! WHAT!!!!!!!! FIZZLE AFTER 1 ALBUM???? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!?!?!?!? Toni has sold well over 60 MILLION records and she did that WITHOUT doing Pop music unlike Whitney and Mariah. LOL She sold OVER 20 Million albums on her first 2 albums alone with her self titled debut and the Secrets album! Toni has won 6 Grammys! LOL ok on that note now i KNOW for a fact u have no credibility. Good day LOL
@gina72916 (continued) yes it helped that she had a natural sensuality that emerged through her perormance but during that 1st LP Toni was covered up for the most part & her sensuality was actually played down so that people could focus on her vocal ability. Take the vision away and u still have the listening experience of what we know as Toni Braxton. Debra could sing, but there s just no way she could properly deliver any of Toni's signature ballads, whereas Toni could easily cover Damian Dame
REGARDLESS of his sexuality, they were very talented, this song is beautiful and one of my favorites to this very day. It's very sad bot of them passed. I have the mp3 on my computer (if you want the mp3, inbox me your email and i will gladly share it)and I also have this song as a ringtone on my cell phone. Can we all just agree that we love this song and not fight?
R&B duo "Damian Dame" (pictured above) consisted of Debra Jean Hurd aka "Deah Dame," and Bruce Edward Brodus aka Damian. They were the first act signed to the "LaFace," label by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Antonio "L.A." Reid. They were famous for the following hits, "Exclusivity," "Right Down To It," and "Gotta Learn My Rhythm." Deah would die in an car accident on June 27, 1994. She was 35 years old. Damian would die on the same day (June 27th) two years later of colon cancer.
Ironically she died June 27th1994 from a car accident and he died from colon cancer on the exact same day in 1996 a sad time for R&B fans. It was heartbreaking that they were just getting started when they made this classic. RIP to them both.
moped accident she passed from it says he died from colon cancer, but close friends & relatives said they're sure it was AIDS related... just a fyi (Wilkipedia)
I always did like this song and this duo they were gone way too soon and the freaky thing about it they both died on the same day two years apart. I wonder what would have been if they were still around....they were just getting on their way. RIP!!!
@tianitra it was a little surprising - at the time if you remember . many 80s -early 90s artists, were gender bending to get a look that might cross over to MTV - some were gay, some were not. Most of the British artists, were very good at it. Even mainstream artists like Human league - Duran duran - Wham - Cameo - Prince - Micheal - Madonna - Eurithmics were playing with theyre sexuality to be controversial, thats why I just thought it was a way to get attention
@tianitra Back in the early 80's "metro" was just called being "preppy". Like "metro" it wasn't a gay thing just a subculture of guys who were just neat and into being stylish.
I don't care how this young man lost his life, I am sorry that he is gone. You don't have to be gay to get AIDS. He had a woman/wife/partner and a little girl. I am also sorry that Deah Dame/Debra is gone. I would have liked to hear more music from both of them! RIP
We need a couple to come back on the scene with this sort devotion and chemistry. I loved this duo, they empowered more than just a money making union. You can tell that in their lyrics and performance. Remember Damian Dame.

If he infected Left Eye and Chili, how is Chili able to hold out so long? Is it the treatment and herbs from Dr. Sebi from Honduras who Left Eye was down there with when she passed in that car accident?

Damain Dame was a great group ready for a long term stardom. It's so terrible that both of them passed away so early in life. Their music is still remembered!
Remember listening to this song when I was 10, even though it came out in 1991. I really miss the 1990s. They do not make music like they used to. This has substance, as compared to the RnB we have to listen to. Sad that both artists had to pass away at their prime.
I remember them...But, i didnt know both was dead...sad..I wonder how dame died? and Carol (IF she has it) is suffering it's really sad that she has to live w/the reminder of him in that manner...
This man passed from AIDS and his Wife Carol has it now..Colon Cancer at 29..yeah ok..he was bi..his wife, is very sick and thin and frail. let's just leave it alone.
Noisy neighbors Carla and Joe used to rock this shit too!!! They were the best noisy neighbors ever! I was not allowed to listen to hip hop and I was stopped from watching videos. I wish Carla and Joe had big screen in front of the window. I Really like this vid. Dame was fine. (that the man right?)
I heard so many rumors about how he dies and if he was or wasn't gay. I personally don't care. This song was a Club banger...But he does have the same hair style that my sister used to rock!
This was when "New Jack Swing" first progressed from being mostly overproduced rubbish to maturity. As for most of today's so called RnB artists! Listen to the whole album and you might just learn what real RnB is!
Wow that is so sad. I didn't know that they both died. So Sad!!!! I must've wore this song out for a year back in 1991. I llllllloved this song. Thanks for the post. I still have my cassette for this album.
Man I think about cuz all the time he should still be here doing music it seem like just yesterday when he was happy that laface put him on r.i.p. love always your lil cuz

I think they had that special kinda love, where one isn't much good, without the other. Their circumstance was so synchronized!

This song was a Club banger...But he does have the same hair style that my sister used to rock!
d1inonly 3 years ago 4
Yep I keep hearing rumors that he died of Aids too!!
star870 3 years ago
it was colon cancer he died from. our community (black community) thinks every black person in entertainment or in the public eye is gay.

This was when "New Jack Swing" first progressed from being mostly overproduced rubbish to maturity. As for most of today's so called RnB artists! Listen to the whole album and you might just learn what real RnB is!
