  • One correction--That 5 million 400 thousand also included post war examples. You forgot to mention International Harvester and Harrington Richardson-both made Garands, but only post war. Springfield also made some post war examples.

  • i thought it was a 30-06

  • @colemcgill13 it is:p

  • funny how soldiers said screw this m1 give me my 1903. then they said screw this m16 give me an m14. when the m16 is replaced how many soldiers will say screw this thing give me and m16. but one thing all generations of soldiers have in common is that "basic training was a lot tougher in my day" and "we had values and respected our elders"

  • The M-1 is a great weapon. I had fired one at a rifle range and it was 100 % accurate

with the open sights. W.W. two was won with this soldiers weapon. JosephObe

  • Damn, I need that pic of the chrome Garand in hi-res.

  • Chrome looks nice but i think good old fashioned pakerized metal is much more attractive

  • Just a heads-up: there is one chrome garand like in the video for sale on gunbroker right now, price around $10.000 if I remember correctly... (no, I am not the seller nor am I advertising anything)

  • @Revesvett I'll take two then:)

  • I wonder if it has been shot? Very nice

  • This rifle should still be considered FAR superior to the M16/M4. However it lacks the high capacity detachable magazines required by the majority of modern soldiers who cant hit their targets.

  • In terms of stopping power, range, accuracy-at-range and penetration, its superior.

  • @eifersucht2 well said if i had a choice id probably march into battle with the m1 garand for sure, semi auto fire out of a 30-06 would put the fear of god into the enemy compared to the gay little 5.56

  • @lliamcoombs You really don't know your ass from a hole in the ground do you?

  • Wonder what one of the Chrome presentations Garands would be valued at ?! Beautiful...........

  • yaa i wouldnt mind havin 1 of them

  • I want an M1 garand but if i need to get it i need to pay for the weapon to bee non-shoting mode so i cant use it... because i don`t got an weapon premision :P

  • You need to have an FFL, which requires you to be 21 and older.

  • @skarsboo You need permission to buy it? I would encourage taking a safety course or shadowing those who know how to handle firearms before buying one, but where I live (New Hampshire, USA) I just go in, pay for it, and all I have to do is pass an FBI background check proving I'm not a felon or terrorist... Then I walk out of the store with my gun THE SAME DAY.

  • @RichfromNH Remember no offense Usa is alot of criminals and psychos :P Some ! :P

  • Oh, they did a background check to make certain I'm not crazy or a felon but I could get it the same day. I'm also over 21...

  • Lucky, here in California, it takes weeks to get any firearm, and even then they have to be under a certain ammo capacity, and cannot be full auto.

  • @RichfromNH so can you and everyone else... you aren't special

  • Me want!

  • Quit spamming fake info you moron, and for god's sake learn to speak English.

  • What? I dispell EVERYTHING you say everytime, I always give detailed, technical and precise reasons as to why you're wrong, and YOU need to read up on the rifle, since you constantly make up fictional flaws about it with EVERY M1 video you post on, everyone marks you down because everyone knows its all BS. People see my expertise on weapons and my education with them, and often PM me wondering why you post such crap, I tell them, that some people are just uptight uninformed know-it-alls.

  • No, you werent making sense with your poor english, you made it sound like the stock was where the gas piston was. And once the piston cap is tightened, it will not leak, and it will not come loose, it has to be forcebly unscewed, the solid steel piton cap is over an inch long, once its screwed in, it isnt going anywhere, you make it sound like every M1 leakes gas like no tomorrow, and its piston cap is somehow ALWAYS loose, what makes you think EVERY M1 has the SAME EXACT part LOOSE?

  • And why would I need to "read up" on rifles that I've owned for 30 years?, I know everything about the rifle, inside and out, I've restored hundreds of M1s over the years, I've built dozens of M1s from every nut, spring, screw, bolt and barrel.

It's funny when someone like you comes along thinking they know everything, like the gas piston always leaking (which it does NOT). I mean your gas piston theroy is foolish, its like going around saying every car on earth has its gas cap broken off!!

  • I've also talked to a few WWII veterans aswell as at least 2 dozen other gun professionals and experts recently about your theroy about the gas piston star key being "loose" all the time, and they always say that it never lost any gas, because they SCREWED IT ON after field stripping it, once its screwed on, the ONLY way it will come out, or even become LOOSE, is to unscrew it, which takes quite a bit of finger and hand muscles, its NOT going to just "COME OUT", that theroy is just ridiculous.

  • It seems pretty silly that you're the ONLY one that speaks of this "epic fatal flaw' with the M1 rifle, nobody else on earth mentions it, no manuals ever say anything about it being a problem, no veterans ever reported a problem with it, no gun expert ever even mentions any sort of problem with the gas piston cap, NOTHING. YOU are the ONLY ONE who claims its a "huge" problem. I'm afraid reality vs YOUR reality is quite different.

  • I'm petty sure you'd know if the gas port cap was loose, since it would hiss when you shot, you'd notice it, then you'd make a quick tighten, and you're good to go, you would not "die", and yes I've spoken with many WWII and Korean war veterans, and gun experts, all say that it will not kill you, nor will it explose, or anything, if it isnt all the way on, it will make a loud hissing sound when you shoot, I know because I've shot one of my M1 rifles with the gas piston cap loosened.

  • When I shot my M1 with the key loosened, all that happened was a loud sudden hiss, and a small cloud of pressure, however the rifle fired JUST FINE, only a small drop in muzzle velocity, so that pretty much disproves your theroy.

And Carbines were not meant as frontline weapons, they only had an effective range of 50 yards, had poor penetration, and mild accuracy, Carbines are personal defence weapons, not rifles, and not meant for heavy combat. Garands and Carbines arent in the same catagory

  • hello i have been having problems with my m1 garand. From time to time it has been "slam firing" i guess ud call it, fully automatic, un controlled fire. I keep it clean and have taken it apart a good 2 or 3 times and everything obvious seems to be alright. i have been running federal 150 gr powershok ammunition throught it, maybe its over pressure but im not sure. your imput is appreciated thanks

  • Yeah typically slam firing is caued by over pressure, it can result in 3 or 4 shots being fired automatically with no control, this is a dangerous situation. I think taking it to a local gunsmith would be the smart thing to do they'll identify the cause right there.

  • thanks for your imput, i knew it wasnt good its done it 2 or 3 times and i havent shot it since haha unexpected automatic fire out of a 30-06 is enough to knock your socks off!

  • Huh, yeah, suddenly you have a BAR instead of an M1!, well your welcome though.

  • The reason your Garand is slam firing is because of the commercial bullets. You need to use military like the CMP Greeks or try the new Hornady special load for Garand. I believe Federal also makes a load for Garand. The other choice is hand load. Now the reason why it slam fires is because the military bullets use a harder style primer than commercial. The Garand loads the bullets with quite a bit of pressure and the firing pin can make contact as it locks in, so a weak primer can cause trouble

  • Another thing to realize is commercial rounds use a different style of powder that can cause your operation rod to bend. The military used a slower burning powder. You can do some searching and it will tell you what primer and powders can be used safely in the Garand.

  • @michsteve09 thanks very much man, i just got a whole reloading kit. when i get some 30-06 dies at least i can start experimenting with different loads and see what works best, ill make sure i get some slow burning powder for it, and do u know what brand of primers i should be looking into?

  • @lliamcoombs If the action has been slamming forward at a very hard rate. My best guess is to switch ammo and use American Eagle speacily made Garand ammo it may help to stop the slam firing. hope this helped

  • @theotherhomer thanks for the reply, i bought a lee reloading set a while ago and ive been running my handloads through it with the 30-06 factory crimp dies and cci 250 pimers, ive been loading them at the minimal load for 30-06 in the lee loading book and it has been working fantastic, ive probably put over 100 of my handloads through it without a single jam or slamfire its been great!

  • @theotherhomer I doubt that changing the ammo will help. First, check the firing pin tang for damage. I would then check the firing pin for excess protrusion. Slam firing is a VERY dangerous condition in the M1.

  • yeah the m1 wasn't designed to use commercial ammo which is hotter/ higher pressure which, as well as inducing slam fires, can also bend the operating rod. 1. buy surplus ammo its cheaper than commercial too ps. make sure its ammo with "non-corrosive" primers 2. buy commercial ammo manufactured specifically for the m1 or 3. buy an adjustable gas valve then u can set yr gun to work safely with all commercial ammo u can get them for $40 but dont shoot anything over 180 gr the gun is not meant to.

  • @tatterhead56

that's a nice way to represent Americans....

  • i know

  • You should be :D

  • What a beautifully designed rifle. I have to buy myself an M1 Garand at some point.

  • There are a lot of options. You can get vintage ones that were used in the war, or one of the 'new' ones made by Springfield from 2002-2007. I personally will probably get a newer one since I want to shoot it a lot.

  • The original Springfield Armory is gone but Winchester is still active. I have no idea why the stopped producing the rifle.

  • It probably costs too much to make, but its still a rifle well worthy of combat, after firing M-4s M-16s M-14s, MP-5s. and have owned a Garand since I was 18, the M-1 can still easily hold it's own in modern combat. Just because its an older rifle, everyone seems to think its inferior, 8 shots of .30-06 is more than capable of doing untold amounts of damage, far more than the tiny 5.56mm, the .30 cal has better range power, penetration, and flat trajectory, so its easier to hit targets at range

  • Yeah. But if Auto Ordnance can bringback the M1 Carbine they should have a Garand. It'd be worth it to me.

  • Fulton Armory actually makes brand-new Garands and they're reputed to be excellent (though very expensive.) If you want a "new" Garand which still has some history, pick up a CMP Special. USGI parts all re-parkerized, new stock and new barrel. I have one and it's a wonderful rifle, shoots and feels like it would've coming straight out of Springfield in 1942.

  • Thanks. Guy at the range I go to said they had new Garands I just didn't believe him at first.

  • Do you have a vintage one or one of the newer ones?

  • It was my grandfather's in WWII.

  • Hold on to that piece of history!

  • You bet I will.

  • its not winchester its a springfield

  • The Mondragon was an automatic rifle, or technically a LMG, not a general issue semi-auto gas operated battle rifle, the Mondragon was issued like the B.A.R. was.

  • Haha, dam wrong. It was available as LMG with 100 rd drum mag but also as semi auto.

  • Were talking about the first general issue gas operated clip fed semi auto battle rifle.

  • Ever heard about the Mauser fliegerkarbiner M1915?

  • Yep, but was far outdated in time for WWII.

  • Comment removed

  • yes the original version of the kar98k

  • o ok legomaster

  • Love the Garand especially that on in Chrome. This weapon has a great part in the history of the free world.

  • one of the greatest rifles of all time

  • If you say you "rape ass" with this gun of Call of Duty, be my guest. Go shoot one for real then I'll come over and slap you on your sore shoulder and say "Hows it going of Call of Duty?"

  • The kick on an M1 isn't that bad...the weight of the rifle and the gas action really really cuts down on recoil. Slightly worse than a .410 shot gun shell.

  • I know that but that one was for all the weak nerds that use COD as a fucking encyclopedia. Don't get me wrong its a great game but it just doesn't compare to the real thing.

  • ha i know....i hate people that think just because they've shot it in a game they've shot it for real.

  • looks mint condition nice!!!

  • I LOVE THAT GUN

  • automobile accident? It was NO accident, HE WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO DIED IN THE CRASH! It was planned because Russia was scared America would find out what they really wanted. Patton was right. But Patton rocked and so does the gerand!

  • beautiful rifle

  • My dad just bought a m1911 from 1944, 2000 € :O

  • To think that the British army almost adopted this just before World War 2.

I'm a Lee Enfield fan (you have to be in no-semi-auto-UK) but still I'd say the M1 is the epitome of classic rifle design.

  • the winchester is beautifull!

  • I just learned about CMP today and I'm already filling out the forms! I can't believe I almost paid $1500 from a dealer, what a rip! Should have my Garand in a couple of months or so. I really wish they'd offer .45's and M14's as well. Inexplicably, most of these pieces of history seem destined to become scrap when millions of Americans would gladly pay to own them.

  • I think the .45's are unavailable because we still have them in armories because they are still used by us on the battlefield even today (although not in the numbers as before). The M14 will probably never be offered to the public as is, the only people selling real US Military M14's is the Fulton Armory. We are still using the M14, the service academies and military academies (like mine) use M14's, and because of the selective rate of fire, it will always be classified as a machine gun.

  • I'm saving up to buy form the CMP as well. An M1 from the CMP is my next purchase! I'm just going to buy a Springfield Armory M1A, it may not have the military history of a real M14, but it will be brand new (not used and abused condition), and won't be worn down either. The Fulton Armory has a complicated and gov't-approved de-selector switching process that allows them to sell old M14's, but they are the only ones I know of that sell them

But anyway, that's a nice Winchester, nice vid!

  • Since .30-06 ammunition is no longer stocked by DoD, M1 Rifles are useless so are better off sold, but M14s can use 7.62x51mm that is standard issue ammunition.

I have heard several accounts of M14 rifles mothballed since Vietnam being dusted off for service in Iraq/Afghanistan only now as a designated marksman's rifle, usually after some modifications such as advanced scope and/or new stock.

  • The ammunition might not be stocked anymore but most m1 owners reload their own ammunition now a days.

  • I was thinking on a remote army base, if a soldier uses an M1 Garand for whatever reason then the quartermaster probably will not be able to provide .30-06 ammunition for range practice and deployment. They would only stock 5.56mm and 7.62mm rifle calibres.

However that is not an issue for civilians as the open market can support distribution of many different calibres, including .30-06.

  • yeah you're right, i just looked it up because i thought 30-06 was nato standard, but it turns out they went with a cartrige that is ALMOST the same, but not. Are there any nato standard rounds that are actually american in orgin? 9mm,5.56, 7.62, is .50cal considered nato standard?

  • There is a modification that involves changing the barrel of this rifle to accommodate the 7.62 x 51MM cartridge, also known as the 7.62 NATO round. This would increase its utility as a battle rifle, perhaps not in the United States, but for third world countries.

I spoke to former Phillipine Army soldier who had used one of these rifles in an engagement with the Moros of Mindanao during the 1970's. They were inclined to engage PI troops using M-16's but hesitated against M1 equipped units.

  • Thanks for the info, I didn't consider conversion. I just googled it to find the ever-industrious US Navy actually used M1 rifles converted to 7.62NATO. They were fed from 20 round M14 magazines but did you catch whether the Philippine models were the same?

Though I've always had a fondness for en-block clips from the logistic advantage of reduced overall ammo weight while being the quickest way to reload when firing prone. But real soldiering probably prefers the benefits of box magazines.

  • Hi:

My apologies. I do not believe that the PI models were converted to the 7.62. They are the same WW2/Korea stock that was arsenal refinished and restocked in Uncle Sam's Arms Pantry. As another aside, the U.S. sold all their tooling to the Italians, who made Beretta M-1's (which are highly prized collector's items). They made the Beretta BM-59 and the BM-62 chambered in 7.62. These rifles are purported to be higher in quality than the counterpart M-14, which is also a Garand derivative.

  • heaver rounds 30-06 going head to the 223 no contest

  • Oh yeah!

  • The 5.56 fragments though, creating un-healible would cavities.

Of course you really can't compare an intermediate cartridge to a full sized rifle cartridge.

Personally I don't see why we don't just go back to battle rifles. Update the FAL, G3, or M14 and we would be set. The intermediate cartridge was really for closer combat and rapid fire (StG 44), but I think with the invention of the battle rifle, there are little advantages to the assault rifle.

  • the m-14 was a great rifle you could hit somebody at 800 yards in a trained hands and it gave a solution to a million dollar answer with a thousand dollar solution

  • While I do the the M14 (Garand with external mags), I believe the FAL was the superior weapon of that era.

  • 30-06 best all round cartridge ever invented.

  • Filipino Christian militias in the southern Philippines still use them to defend their farms, homes, and families from Muslim intruders, as well as still in service with the government forces as a reserve-issue weapon.

It's been 60 years, and still kickin' ass.

  • yesterday was my 15th birthday and my dad gave me my grandfathers m1 garand, man i love it!

  • ur fucking lying

  • fuck you no im not,!

  • Damn that's the shit.

  • i know its aweswome, i never thought my dad would of given it to me till i was at least 18, :)

  • go shoot it...

  • me and my dad are as soon as possible, but we need to buy some 30.06 bullets, i have two clips my grandfather used in the war, :) its aweosme

  • are you a member of the cmp

  • no, what is the cmp?

  • its a goverment owned store filled with surplus weapons like the garand,carbean,1903, and cheap 30-06 ammo.CMP stands for civlian marksmanship program you can by online but you have to be a member fill some paper work and if you buy a rifle you have to wait 60 to 90 days ammo is like 1 to 2 weeks

  • ok, i might look into that! thanks :)

  • lucky i got a 22 revolver im buying a garand from the cmp in alabama

  • thats kickass

  • I love my 1944 Springfield Armory built Garand.

  • Thank you Mr Garrison for this informative commentary

  • Jeez, if they didnt say that was chrome plated I'd almost think it was a render, man that thing is a beauty.

  • My friend Dj has a M1 Garand Rifle.

  • faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaascinating...

  • Best rifle of WWII and Korea!!!

  • This IS! the greatest Battle Implement! XD!~

  • Mbond18, what country are you in? If you are an American, you might be able to purchase one from the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

If you are not an American, unfortunately, this does not apply.

  • fuck this gun is such a beauty... sadly it's banned in austria :( without any reason... normally we can own semi auto rifles. but they say this gun can be made to a fully auto rifle just too easy. dunno if this is true.

  • The M1 itself may not be real easy to convert to full auto, but I would recommend that you look up the M-14. That is essentially a M-1 that has been converted to use a 20 round detachable box magazine, a little less wood, and a screw on the gas cylinder that could be turned to convert it from full auto to semi-auto. The U.S. army still uses the M-14, but it's now more commonly known as the M-21.

  • Wasnt the garand a 30-06? My friends dad has a couple and he said it fired a 30-06

  • yes it is .30-06 but that was the standard .30 caliber ammunition used by the army during ww2 so they just called it .30 caliber.

  • i really want one of those!!

  • this shit was in medal of honor heroes its fucking awesome

  • Got to love the Garand.

  • That's a damn beautiful rifle.

  • I want a Garand. That is my favorite WWII gun. I am only 19, but my great grandfather fought in WWII. I wish I Could get one..haha

  • great pice of history..

  • I love my Garand too, I wouldnt trade it for anything in the world :)

  • I love my Garand, its my favorite gun to fire. Mine was made in 44 and I still use it to hunt deer to this day. Great Rifle!

  • that is a good weapon

  • the m1 garand was built by more than just winchester and springfield they also were built by harrington and richards, and International Harvester

  • can you two pls stop arguing?? Thanks!

my a/c is broken! omg. im on cam too lol! tu

  • Is the man narrating this that creepy megachurch minister who got busted buying meth and male hookers? Sounds like him.

  • no se que poner, solo que bonito, que bonito, junto con la Thompson, el Kar 98 aleman, la MP40 alemana son los simbolos mas conocidos de la WWII

  • anywhere we can go to get more info and pics on the presentation piece, god damn it looks amazing

  • it was developed by springfield, not winchester

  • They were manufactured by several companies, Winchester included. Mine is a Winchester make.

  • man i got to shoot this rifle yesterday at the range and it was awesome. the concussion was pretty strong from 10 feet away. i am going to buy one as soon as i can.

  • OK, gun buffs. What kind of groups do these rifles shoot at 100 yds from the bench?

  • If you know what your doing and you adjust your windage correctly, you can reach fairly far. My personal best was 7/8 rounds on a 24/72 silhouette target at 300yards.I did fairly well,Ive had alot of time with the Garand.Mine was an original Korean War era Garand given to my Great Uncle by an American Officer for his quartly service, my great uncle was wounded and detailed to be the officers "secretary". Pretty neat. It was stolen a couple months ago and recovered in a drainage pipe. Thanks thugs!

  • so hows the gun recovery going...

  • The Garand was recovered like I had said before. In a drainage pipe/ditch not to far from my house. They ditched the bulky items and took mostly pistols and a few letters from kin dating back from the Civil War all the way to Vietnam. Its truly sickening man. I honestly cried because it was so much of my families history you know? I think the crooks thought it was Tax info or something to steal m identity, im not sure. It was in a leather breifcase. I dont think Ill get them back.

  • Falloutdude222. Rebel gunworks. Brisbane

  • thanks mate

  • A gunshop in Australia has one for sale at the moment. Winchester made, unused in original grease $4950 ausd.

  • link? what shop? i'd love to get my hands on one, even deac'ied' just for display. semi automatic rifles are like rocking horse shit here, arent they outlawed?

btw this presentation piece looks stunning all chromed up!

  • a really great weapon

  • WWI or WWII? its from WWI right?

  • WWII

  • i agree with southern 661

  • the M1 should still be used today. round bout the easiest rifle to reload in history. great power. great accuracy. great look.

  • it still is used but more as a ceremonial weapon. But you don't know rebel or para-military force somewhere in the world may still use them, as the Thompson was used by rebels in Bosnia in the 90's,it is a possibility.

  • his name is properly pernounced GARE-UND, rhyming with errand

  • what a beautiful rifle!!!!

  • i never new patton died in europe in a car accident

  • nore me i knew he died in 1945

  • That Chrome Winchester must be worth $25,000 and up!

  • b way more than 25k, a one of a kind, b was ment to be presented to someone. ya can make a replica but the history that that particular rifle has atached to it cant be copied

  • There is three guns i just love: M1 Garand, M16, and Tommygun.

  • I already have a tommy gun replica. All I need is a garand and I'm good. PS... check out the marushin airsoft m1.

  • I will.

  • I like this gun !

  • it is worth more then 1000 and i have one from world war 2

  • it costs more than an m4 o_o

  • Beautiful rifle!:)

  • That hoop is usually on fire since the its the wife. I've checked out CMP and I'm glad I am a member of a local gun club that has service rifle competitions. I was about to shell out three times as much if it didn't mention my next wish to a fellow shooter. Thanks dreiband for the advice. No one can go wrong with CMP.

  • You need to fill that empty space, sierrareloader! You can get an M1 from the CMP very easily, at a reasonable price. Just jump through a few hoops, not hard if you're a shooter.
