i read on wikipedia that sammy gravano and gaspipe are right down the hall from each other. gaspipe ended up with life because he lied on info about sammy. im not sure if they said this but from what understood they said that gaspipe knew info on sammy that could have turned the gotti case around.
The reason Sammy did what he did is because Gotti betrayed his trust first. If he didn't , he damn well knew he was going to. What ultimately confirmed his suspicions were the tapes that were played back, but also the way Gotti was treating him towards the end. He was either ready to hand him over or have him whacked. Gotti was a vicious mobster, directly or indirectly responsible for the deaths of dozens, if not hundreds of people - very many of them innocent. He bribed, he robbed, he forged, he killed, he backstabbed, he lied, he intimidated, he committed adultery. What an honorable man! This movie pays tribute to someone who doesn't deserve any of it, it is onesided and pretty far from the truth.

This movie didn't show how much of a piece of shit John Gotti was. The real John Gotti was twice as cocky and twice as violent. But, despite his faults he was a gangster to the core, it takes a lot of balls to smile when a judge gives you life without parole. Any mobster who can do that time and not give a fuck is entitled to a lot of respect, even if he is a criminal.
