I was also on this flight. 14 years old and flying alone to go visit my grandparents. This was where I learned about g-force. Not something I ever want to experience again. Remember the maneuver they tried to get the landing gear out? Very dramatic and scary day...luckily one with a great outcome. What a walk down memory lane finding this video.
I was on this flight....... great ending but a terrifying experience..... I was 20 at the time..... we knew early in the flight that there was a problem with the landing gear... we flew for 2 hours to burn fuel..... no one spoke, some were crying, some throwing up... all of us thinking that we may die and the plane could ignite upon landing....... God had other plans.....
@Magnolia7647 soo i was at work and i was talking to one of my co-workers and i mentioned that one day i want to own a plane. then she told me that her brother flew planes and then she told me that he was the pilot of this particular crash lol, Larry Fuda. It's a small world isn't it?
I sure do miss seeing those planes. My father flew for Piedmont Airlines for 36 years. Retired 1 year before Mr. Davis sold the airline to US Air. Many childhood memories aboard those planes. Thanks for the video.
Goodness, I worked for Piedmont as a station agent . I remember the reservation agents in Winston-Salem. They were the best and most professional people and it was a pleasure to speak with those people over the phone. They were just smooth and courteous and unflappable under pressure. Now, you just talk to somebody in India. Oh well .....times change sadly.
@yakkominniegoofy This happened in Aug.,1989. It was actually a day or so before the official merger with USAir. Not to worry.....that plane flew again.
@ROYNEPTUNE Oh, I see. Back then, my mom used to work for Piedmont Airlines back in the 1980s. She worked at a reservation office in Winston-Salem, NC. She retired from the reservation office (which was then USAir) back in 1999.
From what I remember they had to circle to burn fuel--the closeup is from the tower to assertain that the gear was indeed not down. The pilot slammed the plane on the runway - several times -to try to jar loose the gear. Quite dramatic--ends up--a chock was jamming the gear. No one was injured--
I remember this well, we used to toss the chocks in the wheel well all the time when we were repositioning the aircraft. that is up until this happened.

Think this is the landing in GSO; Larry Fuda was the captain and as you can see did a great job!
